Claude Monet was a founder and central figure of the 19th century art movement known as Impressionism. Early in his career, Monet painted realistic landscapes, but after the 1870s he focused more on the effect of changing light on everyday objects. Often he painted multiple studies of the same subjects, from train stations and haystacks to the London skyline, the Rouen Cathedral and, most famously, water lilies. During the Franco-Prussian War (1870-71) Monet fled from Paris to England, where he formed friendships with Camille Pisarro, Auguste Renoir and other figures central to Impressionism. He returned to Paris at the end of the war, but ended up settling in Giverny, where he began a long series of paintings of haystacks (or grainstacks) during the 1890s. Monet's Impressionistic paintings sold well and his financial success allowed him to purchase property in Giverny, where he built a large garden that became the subject of his series Water Lilies (1906-26). Monet's scenes have since become some of the most recognized paintings in the world.

Claude Monet
was born November 14, 1840 in Paris, France. Monet was the leader of a group of French artists called the "Impressionists," which included such painters as Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Camille Pissarro. Monet's family moved to the port town of Le Havre in 1845. He took his early art lessons from the painter, Eugene Boudin. Boudin, who worked up sketches out-of doors, encouraged Monet to do the same. "Suddenly the veil was torn away.... My destiny as a painter opened out to me," he later said. For the next 60+ years Monet explored the effects of light on outdoor scenes. He was the first artist to let his initial impressions stand as completed works, rather than as "notes" done in preparation for work in the studio. Monet moved to Paris in 1859, where he met and befriended Pissarro and

My History
I am a Parisian of Paris. I was born there in 1840, under the reign of the good king Louis-Philippe which was an epoch centred on business interests and in which the Arts were regarded with real derision. As it was, my childhood was spent at the Havre where my father had settled in 1845 in order to better pursue his own business interests and as it happened, this childhood of mine, was essentially one of freedom. I was born undisciplineable. No one was ever able to make me stick to the rules, not even in my youngest days. It was at home that I learned most of what I do know. I equated my college life with that of a prison and I could never resolve to spend my time there, even for four hours a day when the sun was shinning bright, the sea was so beautiful and it was so good to run along the cliff-tops in the fresh air or frolic in the sea. Up until the age of fourteen or fifteen, much to my father's great disappointment, I continued this very irregular but healthy way of life. Somehow, in between, I did acquire the rudiments of a basic education including some proficiency at spelling. My studies went no further and did not cause me too much trouble, as I was able to interweave them with a number of distractions. I ornamented the margins of my text books, I decorated the blue paper of my exercise books with ultra fantastic designs and represented in the most irreverant manner possible, the features of my masters - either drawingtheir faces in front view or in profile.

Artist - Monet Monet, Claude-Oscar (1840-1926) Portrait by Carolus-Duran One of the world’s most famous landscape artists, Monet was a leading member of the Impressionist group. He rejected the conventions of high finish and tonal colour to complete pictures out of doors and directly in front of the subject. His rapid technique, luminous palette and attempts to capture fleeting weather conditions were at first condemned by critics. Later however, Monet was hailed as a master in the painterly tradition of French art. Read the BBCi Arts profile. Thames below Westminster , c.1871 Haystacks, Snow Effect Monet: did you know? Monet loved London for its heavy fog and declared that the capital wouldn’t be nearly as beautiful without its ‘mysterious mantle’. Claude Monet a biography....
Born Nov. 14, 1840, Paris, Fr.d. Dec. 5, 1926, Giverny
Claude Monet's family moved to Le Havre when he was ten. He began drawing as a caricaturist but was converted to landscape painting by Boudin from whom he gained a lasting love of painting out of doors. In 1859 he studied in Paris (supported by a small allowance from his aunt) at the Atelier Suisse and formed a friendship with Pisarro. After military service in Algiers, he returned to Le Havre and met Jongkind to whom he said he owed `the definitive education of my eye'. In 1862 he entered the studio of Gleyre in Paris, there meeting Renoir , Sisley and Bazille with whom he was to form the nucleus of the Impressionist group. One of Monet's pictures Impression: Sunrise gave the group its name. During the Franco-Prussian War (1870-71) he took refuge in England with Pissarro: he studied the work of Constable and Turner, painted London, and met the dealer Durand-Ruel, who was to become one of the great champions of the Impressionists. From 1871 to 1878 Monet lived at Argenteuil, a village on the Seine near Paris, and here were painted some of the most joyous and famous works of the Impressionist movement, not only by Monet, but by his visitors Manet Renoir and Sisley.
