It was loosely structured in that many painters were associated with the movement for only brief periods in their careers. Their association often came about more for the purpose of exhibiting their works than from an approach to painting held in common.

Claude 'Big Ponds' Monet was born in Paris but spent most of his boyhood (and pocket money) in the port of Le Havre where he sold cartoons to classmates, was described as a rascal by teachers, and met French painter, Gene 'Ozone' Boudin, who convinced the budding young artist the best way to further his career would be to paint al fresco (a smart move, al being the biggest gallery owner in town.) After doing two years' National Service in Algeria and being completely knocked out by the spectacular light plus an equally spectacular bout of typhoid, Claude returned to France where he trained at the Suisse Art School. He then began work at the studio of Gleyre who offered discount rates to skint young daubers like Claude and his contemporaries, Renoir, Bazille, Sisley and Pissarro, charging just 10 francs for the use of studio and models (and for five more, you got to take them home for the weekend). Claude also spent many happy hours painting out of doors at Argenteuil and in the Forest of Fontainebleau, an experience that has given rise to some confusion over what are believed to be his 'almost magical' flicks of white light but are, in essence, large dollops of wood pigeon excrement. In the late C19 Claude became a serial haystack painter and was only cured of this affliction when he fell victim to the even more powerful mass neurosis known as 'compulsive gardening disorder' (celebrated in his lost masterpiece, 'Bonjour Monsieur Titchmarsh'), finally using the fruits of long-awaited success to externalise this new obsession and buy his stonking great spread at Giverny*, now so beloved of modern day Monet-maniacs who visit the place by the trug load to venerate the master (and steal dahlia cuttings). * Graceland for artaholics

Claude Monet Claude Monet also known as Oscar-Claude Monet or Claude Oscar Monet November 14 December 5 ) was a French impressionist painter. Monet was born in Paris, France , but his family moved to Le Havre in Normandy when he was five. His father wanted him to go into the family grocery store business, but Claude Monet wanted to paint. On the beaches of Normandy, he met Eug¨ne Boudin , who taught him en plein air (outdoor) techniques for painting, rather than painting in a studio. Monet served in the army in Algeria for two years of a seven-year commitment ( ), but upon his contracting typhoid his aunt Madame Lecadre intervened to get him out of the army if he agreed to complete an art course at a university. Disillusioned with the traditional art taught at universities, instead in he joined the studio of Charles Gleyre in Paris, where he met Pierre-Auguste Renoir Frederic Bazille , and Alfred Sisley . Together they shared new approaches to art, which later came to be known as impressionism , featuring open spaces and light painted with thick brushstrokes.

Claude Oscar Monet (1840 - 1926)
The museum of Vernon is the only museum of the area exhibiting canvases by Monet, thanks to the generosity of the impressionist master and of his son. Claude Monet presented "Nympheas, 1908", a circular work that he painted in his garden in Giverny This rond painting is a first attempt to give a shape to the idea that will later reach its peak in the "Grandes Decorations". In two oval rooms of the Orangerie museum in Paris, walls are covered by a representation of the waterlily pond, surrounding the viewer. Here, Monet focuses on the waterlilies on the pond, he treats the motive like a landscape. He tries to modify the usual references and landmarks to set the viewer in the middle of a closed space. Monet certainly painted the waterlilies from his boat in the middle of the pond, isolated in a circular space. This work is part of a 6 canvases series painted in February - March 1896. He was the second child born to Claude Adolphe and Louise-Justine Monet. When Claude was about five, the family moved from Paris to the small town of La Havre. His father's brother-in-law, Jacques Lacadre, owned successful wholesale business in La Havre. His wife, Marie-Jeanne Lecadre, convinced him to offer Claude's father a job. Claude Monet spent his childhood in La Havre. He first became known for his caricatures and exhibited this work locally. During this time, he befriended fellow artist Eugene Boudin who became his mentor. Boudin influenced Monet to begin plein air or outdoor painting. He also encouraged Claude to try oil paint and pastels, instead of charcoal as a medium for his artwork.

the artist at a glance
Artist Claude Monet is best known for his remarkable accomplishments as an Impressionist painter. In his works, Monet focused on capturing the fleeting and ephemeral effects of light on objects. And the result is spectacular - today, Monet is widely admired, his paintings appreciated for their subtle colors and innovative painterly technique. Claude Monet was born in 1840 in Paris, France. He began his career as an artist just after the middle of the Nineteenth century, at a time when the French art world was dominated by conservative and traditional painters. Monet rejected the slick Academic style and subject matter so admired by the art connoisseurs of the day, and instead chose to depict scenes from nature and contemporary life. A field of poppies. Haystacks. A water lily pond. The façade of Rouen Cathedral. These were the images that inspired Monet, and he painted them almost obsessively. And whether he painted landscapes, boats on the water, or flowers, his paintings reveal that Monet was a master of portraying the elusive play of light and shadow in his magnificent works. Viewers can see this artistic mastery in some of Monet's most memorable and famous paintings, such as his images of Water Lilies and Haystacks in the Snow More about the art and life of Claude Monet

Claude Monet is considered the archetypal Impressionist, and along with Renoir, Degas, Pissarro, and other like-minded artists, was devoted to painting the transient and softening effects of light and colour.
Claude Monet was born in Paris in 1840. He spent his youth in Le Havre where he worked as a caricaturist. His early mentor, Boudin, converted him to landscape painting.
Claude Monet attended Academie Suisse from 1859 and subsequently enrolled in the studio of Glenyre, where he met Renoir and Sisley. It was with these artists that he formed the Impressionist group. In initiating this group Claude Monet became the groups leader and in 1874 he organized the first Impressionist exhibit. Appropriately, it is one of Monet’s pictures, Impression: Sunrise, which gave the group its name.
Claude Monet moved to Giverny in 1883, and the extensive gardens and lily ponds provided the inspiration for his later works. It was these gardens that inspired the Waterlilies series. From 1890 Monet concentrated on a series of works in which he painted the same subject at different times of the day in different light. The most popular of these are the Haystacks, Rouen Cathedral and Poplar series. He continued to travel to London and Venice, but increasingly focused his attention on Giverny.
