After a visiting scholar uncovered buried treasure at the cooper-hewitt, the verification process began It’s a tale of unexpected riches that trumps any discovery revealed on TV’s Antiques Roadshow : in April, a renowned British scholar unearthed an unsigned drawing by the Italian master painter, sculptor and architect Michelangelo Buonarroti, estimated to be worth $10 million to $12 million. A visiting scholar, Sir Timothy Clifford, director of the National Galleries of Scotland, uncovered the treasure in the collection of the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum in New York City. Only 400 or so drawings by Michelangelo (1475-1564) are known to exist; fewer than a dozen of these are held by museums in the United States. "I am a lucky man who was in the right place in the right time," says Sir Timothy, recalling the moment he first spied the drawing as he rummaged around in a Cooper-Hewitt storeroom, sifting through the contents of a box of sketches by unknown Italian artists. "Did the Michelangelo jump out at me? Of course it did. I’m used to whizzing through boxes of objects, and I don’t stop until I see something with a wonderful quality to it. The piece from Cooper-Hewitt has that quality." Sir Timothy arrived in Manhattan this past spring, at the invitation of Paul Warwick Thompson, the Cooper-Hewitt’s director, to spend a monthlong sabbatical viewing the museum’s sizable holdings in Italian drawings and prints. The nation’s only museum devoted exclusively to historic and contemporary design, the Cooper-Hewitt contains more than 250,000 objects, dating from the Han dynasty to the present, and is among the world’s largest design repositories.

Florentine sculptor, painter, poet and architect. Michelangelo was born at Caprese where his father was the chief Florentine official. He was trained in Florence, first in the technique of fresco painting by D. Ghirlandaio; then under the patronage of Lorenzo the Magnificent, in the Medici school. Here he became a sculptor. Here too, his mind was formed by the companionship of the Neo-platonic philosophers, artists, poets and men of letters Lorenzo had drawn to his household. Michelangelo's own genius was recognized and encouraged from the beginning.
Michelangelo carved the large marble David for the city of Florence along with other works of this period are the Bruges Madonna, the painting of the Holy Family, and the large cartoon or design for a fresco, The Battle of Cascina, done in competition with Leonardo Michelangelo. This important work was destroyed, but not before the studies of the nude in violent action had influenced many artists in a way that led ultimately to the style of Mannerism. In 1508, Michelangelo was assigned the job of decorating the whole of the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican with frescoes. This enormous undertaking took him over 4 years, working virtually single-handed. He was recalled to Rome in 1534 to paint his 2nd great fresco, The Last Judgement, which covers the whole area of the altar wall of the Sistine Chapel.

Michelangelo - Lie Down Painting from Discovering Great Artists
One of Michelangelo's ( MY -KUL- AN -JEH-LO) most famous and best loved works is his painting on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel which he painted entirely while lying on his back. Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475 - 1564) - Italian painter and sculptor, Michelangelo, was the greatest Renaissance artist of all time. His greatest love was the study of the human body, both in painting and in sculpture. He concentrated on observing the human body and was often allowed into hospitals to study bodies of those who had died. Some say that had Michelangelo been left to himself to sculpt instead of paint, he would have become a sculptor because no other form of art so beautifully expressed the richness of the human body. One of Michelangelo's best known and loved works is his painting on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. Michelangelo painted the ceiling entirely while lying on his back. To do this, he had to build a tall, strong scaffold with wooden planks (like a big ladder with a floor to stand on) so that he could climb the scaffold and be close enough to the ceiling to paint it. He assembled his paints and brushes, and lay down on his back to paint, which took four years to complete the entire ceiling! Young artists experience the challenge of painting like Michelangelo by taping a large sheet of paper to the underside of a table and lying down to paint a scene.

All artists spent their youth as humble apprentices, learning their craft in their master's workshop. If they learned well, an artist might attempt a masterpiece. If it was recognized as such by their guild , they would officially become a master artist. Then they could open their own workshop. The road to becoming a master artist was often a long one. Most artists were sons (very few were daughters) of shopkeepers or traders. Around age twelve, a boy's parents would send him to work as an apprentice. If he were lucky, he would join the workshop of a master artist and work for many years, learning the trade and assisting him in his work.
Apprentice and master artists are busy working on many projects in this engraving by Enea Vico of Baccio Bandinelli's Studio.

Michelangelo, quoted in Vasari's Lives of the Artists
  • David
Gigantic marble, started in 1501 and completed in 1504
Michelangelo began work on the colossal figure of David in 1501, and by 1504 the sculpture (standing at 4.34m/14 ft 3 in tall) was in place outside the Palazzo Vecchio. The choice of David was supposed to reflect the power and determination of Republican Florence and was under constant attack from supporters of the usurped Medicis. In the 19th century the statue was moved to the Accademia.
Michelangelo: a dominant force in Florence and Rome
Michelangelo Buonarotti (1475-1564) exerted enormous influence. He, too, was universally acknowledged as a supreme artist in his own lifetime, but again, his followers all too often present us with only the master's outward manner, his muscularity and gigantic grandeur; they miss the inspiration. Sebastiano del Piombo (c.1485-1547), for example, actually used a drawing (at least a sketch) made for him by Michelangelo for his masterwork, The Raising of Lazarus . Masterwork it is; yet how melodramatic it appears if compared with Michelangelo's own painting.

Birth of Venus
(Sandro Botticelli 1444 -1510)
Originally painted in 1485 for the Villa of Lorenzo di Pierfrancesco de' Medici, the original is now housed in the Uffizi gallery in Florence. To Renaissance scholars, the story of the birth of Venus was the symbol of mystery through which the divine message of beauty came into the world.
Size: 80 x 60cm La Primavera (Sandro Botticelli 1444 -1510) Sometimes called 'Allegory of Spring', this painting is one the the most lyrical in all of Western art. It combines a pleasing tang of classical antiquity with dreamy contemporary quality. The faces and figures are drawn so masterfully that the obvious effort of fashioning them is completely hidden. Botticelli painted Primavera for Lorenzo di Pierfrancesco de Medici to decorate his villa on the outskirts of Florence. Size: 80 x 60cm The Creation of Adam (Michelangelo Buonarotti 1475-1564) Arguably the most talented of all the great Renaissance artists, Michelangelo excelled in fine art, sculture and architecture. The Creation of Adam is the centre-piece of his Sistine Chapel frescoes. It is one of the greatest miracles in art how Michelangelo contrived to make the touch of the the Divine hand the centre and focus of the picture, and how he has made us see the idea of omnipotence by the ease and power of this gesture of creation.

Biography
Michelangelo: Artist and Man
He is one of the greatest artists of all time, a man whose name has become synonymous with the word "masterpiece": Michelangelo Buonarotti. As an artist he was unmatched, the creator of works of sublime beauty that express the full breadth of the human condition. Yet in a world where art flourished only with patronage, Michelangelo was caught between the conflicting powers and whims of the Medici family in Florence and the Papacy in Rome. Unlike many artists of his time, his genius was recognized, but at a cost to his personal life. Michelangelo: Artist and Man would be useful for classes on Renaissance History, Art History, and Geography. It is appropriate for middle school and high school. Vocabulary Discussion Questions
  • Michelangelo's masterpiece, The Pieta, was displayed at the 1964 World's Fair. Why was the display of this statue controversial?
  • Art is a subjective medium. What makes a creation "art?" What makes a work of art a masterpiece?
  • Michelangelo's works are considered masterpieces. Why do his works qualify as such? What qualities do they possess that earns them the title of masterpieces?

Following the High's presentation, the exhibition will travel to only one other U.S. venue, the Toledo Museum of Art in September 2001. The exhibition will contain many works by Italy's most famous artist, Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564), that have never before been displayed in this country alongside works by other artists and memorabilia from the artist's family home, Casa Buonarroti, in Florence, Italy. The High's presentation will triple the number of works of art in the United States by Michelangelo. By most counts there are less than a dozen drawings by Michelangelo in American collections and no paintings or sculpture. Now two dozen superb sketches and preparatory studies for such important works as the Sistine Chapel and the Medici Tombs will travel to Atlanta's High Museum of Art. Michelangelo: Drawings and Other Treasures from the Casa Buonarroti , Florence is organized by the High Museum of Art in conjunction with the Casa Buonarroti, Florence.
