From Lives of the Artists: Michelangelo Giorgio Vasari, an Italian painter and architect who is best known for his ten-volume study of Renaissance artists, deeply admired his brilliant contemporary, Michelangelo. In this excerpt from Lives of the Artists (1550; revised 1568), Vasari discusses one of Michelangelo’s greatest works, the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel (1508-1512, Rome). Vasari thought Michelangelo had brought perfection to the art of painting; other artists could do little more than “thank heaven for what has happened and strive to imitate Michelangelo in everything you do.” Want more Encarta?

Michelangelo Buonarroti
Learning and practicing various forms of art at a young age. Michelangelo Buonarroti, more commonly known as just Michelangelo, grew up to become the most revered Italian artist of the 16th century. Michelangelo is a master at both the chisel and paintbrush. His detailed sculptures show not only his great skill with the chisel but also his great knowledge of the human anatomy. The world famous "David" which stands at a towering thirteen feet plus, was perhaps one of Michelangelo greatest sculptures. Michelangelo's skill with the paintbrush is shown clearly in Sistine, here the world's greatest fresco is displayed at its full glory on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. Commissioned by Pope Julius II, Michelangelo worked high above the Chapel's floors, creating his greatest work ever. Interpreting religious scenes taken out of the bible in his own unique style, Michelangelo turned the ceiling of the chapel into a masterpiece of intricate design and unreal proportions. Although Michelangelo was initially regarded as an inferior artist to fellow artist of the time Raphael, the masterpiece of the Sistine Chapel elevated him to the greatest artist of his time. In fact, Michelangelo made such a great impact in art that even Raphael was influenced by his style.

Introduction
The novel The Apprentice introduced you to the life of Arduino as an apprentice painter in Renaissance Florence. This appsgivity will lead you to a better understanding of the lives of two artists from the Renaissance. You will also appreciate the art these two men created. With your teacher, please review your school's acceptable use policy for work on the Internet. Also, links to the web often change. Tell your teacher when you find a poor link in this guide.
The Task
You will be an art critic and fictional advisor to the Medici family. Research the artists Michelangelo and da Vinci at the sites below. Based on your research of the artists and their works, write a persuasive essay advising the Medici's whom they should commission to produce a painting at their new villa. Art historians often think of Michelangelo as a sculptor who painted, while da Vinci was a true painter. Leonardo thought that painting was the purest form of artistic expression, while Michelangelo preferred carving statues. While both men were very versatile -sculptors, architects, poets, and painters- only Leonardo was interested in science. Leonardo saw himself and mankind as a part of nature; to be studied and understood. Michelangelo saw man as unique and godlike. Leonardo calmly observed nature and tried to represent it in his drawings and paintings. Michelangelo deemed himself a creator whose hands were to miraculously bring dead materials to life.

The Italian artist Michelangelo Pistoletto (*1933, Italy) locates art and the artist within social reality. In his oeuvre, the spectator and reality are at times literally incorporated in the work of art and, invariably, connections are being made between both of these 'worlds'.
In 1994, Pistoletto wrote the manifesto Progetto Arte in which he mapped out an art project that could be described as an ongoing dialogue with the world (this text is incorporated within the catalogue which is published on the occasion of this exhibition and which can also be consulted at the website www.cittadellarte.it ). From 1996 onwards, this project was materialised in Cittadellarte – a contraction of 'cittadella' (citadel) and 'città dell'arte (city of the arts). 'Citadel' stands for an enclosed space protecting the arts, whereas 'city' is a metaphor of dynamism and of a complex of relations with the outside world.
Cittadellarte was concretised in an old mill in Pistoletto's native city of Biella and, for the realisation of its aims, relies on the
