Abstract
From the Paper:

"Henri Matisse (1869-1954), a painter, draughtsman, sculptor, printmaker, designer and author, came into the world of art comparatively late in his life and made his reputation as the main exponent of fauvism, the first avante-garde artistic movement of the 20th century. As Russell T. Clement points out, fauvism "was influenced by non-European cultures that were part of the new colonial dominions as found in Africa, Polynesia and Central and South America which encouraged more personal forms of expression than had been known in the West" (89). His career seems to have begun in 1891 when Matisse registered at the Academie Julian and prepared for the entrance exam to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts despite his father's objections to set his life course on the study of art. In 1892, Matisse was invited to join the studio of Gustave Moreau and he remained here until his marriage to Amelie Parayre in January of 1898." Matisse, Henri Emile Benoit (1869-1954), French artist, leader of the Fauve group, regarded as one of the great formative figures in 20th-century art, a master of the use of color and form to convey emotional expression. Matisse was born in Le Cateau-Cambresis in northern France on December 31, 1869. His images of dancers, and of human figures in general, convey expressive form first and the particular details of anatomy only secondarily. Matisse extended this principle into other fields; his bronze sculptures, like his drawings and works in several graphic media, reveal the same expressive contours seen in his paintings. Unlike many artists, he was internationally popular during his lifetime, enjoying the favor of collectors, art critics, and the younger generation of artists. Matisse died in Nice on November 3, 1954.

Biography

French painter, sculptor, and lithographer. Along with Picasso , Matisse is considered one of the two foremost artists of the modern period. His contribution to 20th-century art is inestimably great. Matisse began to study law and, during an illness in 1890, took up painting, thereafter forsaking law entirely. He studied first with the academician Bouguereau and then with Gustave Moreau , in whose studio he met many painters who would soon attain prominence with him in the fauvist movement. Matisse's earliest work was exceptionally mature. He explored impressionism (e.g., La Desserte, 1897; Niarchos Coll., Athens) and, coming into contact with the theories of Paul Signac , drew upon neoimpressionist styles as in Luxe, calme et volupté (c.1905; private coll.). To learn aspects of composition he made variations on the works of the old masters in the Louvre, a practice he continued for many years.
Died in Cimiez, Nizza (FR)

So-called primitive art meant the work of an untrained painter such as the 19th-20th century artist Rousseau, as well as sculpture from other parts of the world, such as Africa. Many late 19th (and early 20th) century European artists were drawn to certain qualities about this 'primitive' art, such as its non-imitative nature, its powerful and inventive stylized forms, and its more direct and honest quality, which contrasted with their impression of the overly refined art of the European academic tradition. Specifically, Picasso was drawn to the Catalan sculpture of his native Spain, as well as African sculpture, and Gauguin was attracted to the simplicity and beauty of Tahiti, where he filled his canvases with bright, independent colors - colors which followed the laws of painting, rather than the imitation of external nature; painting which sought not to imitate nature, but to illuminate the artist's inner reality.
Another visual device used by the Fauves was the black contour, sometimes solid, and sometimes broken. They also sometimes left a "white" contour around forms, which served to integrate the forms with their surrounding space in the image. Both of these devices contributed to a flat image, as opposed to the illusion of spatial depth used in traditional or academic painting. Another device Matisse developed was using one color over most of the painting surface - often red or deep pink - which covered the 'negative' spaces (the "empty" areas in the painting), leaving only simple linear indications of spatial depth such as perspective lines in, for example, an interior view. The lines of floor, ceiling, wall or even table perspective were left in a minimal fashion - leaving only the flattened objects in space - a bunch of flowers, a person, etc. (See

Art books and other products for artists to buy online Artist Names Matisse, Henri Henri Matisse (1869-1954) was a French painter and sculptor who abandoned his legal studies to become a pupil of Gustave Moreau in the 1890s. Matisse initiated fauvism in the early 1900s with boldly patterned and vibrantly coloured still lifes, portraits and nudes such as the controversial ‘Woman With the Hat’ of 1905. Matisse was the only artist to continue fauvism principles after the development of Cubism and Matisse was also inspired by Islamic art. By 1909 he had achieved worldwide recognition. Matisse Picasso
Brian Sewell, London Evening Standard, says:

Interpreting Matisse Picasso

This illustrated work provides an account of the evolving personal relationship between Matisse and Picasso, and in doing so it challenges the popular notion of intense rivalry between the two artists.

When I put a green, it it not grass. When I put a blue, it is not the sky. Henri Matisse Henri Matisse painted Open Window, Collioure
The scene is filled with light, vibrant, and inviting. The vermillion masts of blue-hulled boats float on pink waves below a sky banded with turquoise, pink, and periwinkle. Reflected in the glass of the open window, the scene becomes rectangular blocks of bright green, watery cyclamen, and lilac, and the walls framing the view are violet and turquoise. These are hardly the colors of natureand they provoked an outrage when Matisse exhibited Open Window, Collioure later in the year at the Salon d'Automne in Paris.
"Tiens, Donatello chez les fauves" (Well, well, Donatello among the wild beasts). Soon, these artists were being called the fauves, and room VII le cage. It was one of the first places where the world got a glimpse of what art would be in the twentieth century.
The fauves liberated color from any requirements other than those posed by the painting itself. "When I put a green," Matisse would later say, "it is not grass. When I put a blue, it is not the sky." He was painting pictures, not things. Color was a tool of the painter's artistic intention and expression, no longer limited by the imitation of nature.
Though he was inspired by what he saw around him, for Matisse the imperative was to "interpret nature and submit it to the spirit of the picture." Derain later called the fauves' color "sticks of dynamite," but the serious and hard-working Matisse was an unlikely revolutionary. It was something of an accident that he became an artist at all. Growing up in the bleak, industrial regions of northern France, he had showed no talentor even interestin painting.

He also studied more contemporary art, especially that of the impressionists, and he began to experiment, earning a reputation as a rebellious member of his studio classes.
While he was regarded as a leader of radicalism in the arts, Matisse was beginning to gain the approval of a number of influential critics and collectors, including the American expatriate writer Gertrude Stein and her family. Among the many important commissions he received was that of a Russian collector who requested mural panels illustrating dance and music (both completed in 1911; now in the Hermitage, Saint Petersburg). Such broadly conceived themes ideally suited Matisse; they allowed him freedom of invention and play of form and expression. His images of dancers, and of human figures in general, convey expressive form first and the particular details of anatomy only secondarily. Matisse extended this principle into other fields; his bronze sculptures, like his drawings and works in several graphic media, reveal the same expressive contours seen in his paintings.
