Henri Matisse Biography 1869-1954
The Joy of Life (c) VG Bild-Kunst, Bonn 2001/2002 Henri Matisse was born as the son of a grain merchant in the Picardy region of northern France. He studied law and worked as a law clerk. When Henri Matisse was 21 years old he became seriously ill. During the phase of convalescence Matisse started painting and discovered his love for art, which should become his life-long passion. Two years later, in 1892, he gave up his career as a lawyer. He attended art classes at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and dabbled in different styles. He then was influenced by the impressionist and post-impressionist painters Pisarro, Cezanne, van Gogh, Gauguin and Paul Signac and by the paintings of W. Turner. Around the year 1905 he finally found his own style characterized by daring, bright colors executed in a broad brush stroke.

Henri Matisse is considered the most important French artist of the 20th century and, along with Pablo Picasso , one of the most influential modernist painters of the last century. Matisse began studying drawing and painting in the 1890s. A student of the masters of Post-Impressionism, Matisse later made a reputation for himself as the leader of a group of painters known as Les Fauves. An ironic label given to them by a critic (it means "wild beasts"), the name reflected Matisse's aggressive strokes and bold use of primary colors. In 1905 Matisse gained sudden fame with three paintings, including Woman with the Hat , purchased by the wealthy American ex-patriot Gertrude Stein . Beyond painting, he worked with lithographs and sculpture, and during World War II he did a series of book designs. Later in his career he experimented with paper cutouts and designed decorations for the Dominican chapel in Vence, France. Along with Picasso, Matisse was considered one of the world's greatest living painters throughout his life. His other works include "The Dance" (1910), "Red Fish" (1911) and "The Moroccan in Green" (1913).

French artist, leader of the fauve group, regarded as one of the great formative figures in 20th-century art, a master of the use of color and form to convey emotional expression.
Matisse was born in Le Cateau in northern France on December 31, 1869. The son of a middle-class family, he studied and began to practice law. In 1890, however, while recovering slowly from an attack of appendicitis, he became intrigued by the practice of painting. In 1892, having given up his law career, he went to Paris to study art formally. His first teachers were academically trained and relatively conservative; Matisse's own early style was a conventional form of naturalism, and he made many copies after the old masters. He also studied more contemporary art, especially that of the impressionists, and he began to experiment, earning a reputation as a rebellious member of his studio classes. Matisse's true artistic liberation, in terms of the use of color to render forms and organize spatial planes, came about first through the influence of the French painters

Biography:

Henri Matisse was employed as a lawyer’s clerk before switching to his art profession in 1890. Matisse briefly studied impressionism, but under the training of Moreau, he learned to use his own simplified figures and bold colors. His first works bordered on Neo-Impressionism, but as he progressed as an artist, he found that his painting and prints employed different values. After an exhibition in 1905, Matisse and his cohorts were given the name Les Fauves by critics, supplying their movement with the name Fauvism. While battling illness in Vence, a town near Nice, he was cared for by nuns. In return, Matisse financed and designed a chapel. Bedridden at end of his life and unable to paint at an easel, he cut out and painted on paper, gluing and assembling to form his final work.

His contribution to 20th-century art is inestimably great. Matisse began to study law and, during an illness in 1890, took up painting, thereafter forsaking law entirely. He studied first with the academician Bouguereau and then with Gustave Moreau , in whose studio he met many painters who would soon attain prominence with him in the fauvist movement. Matisse's earliest work was exceptionally mature. He explored impressionism (e.g., La Desserte, 1897; Niarchos Coll., Athens) and, coming into contact with the theories of Paul Signac , drew upon neoimpressionist styles as in (c.1905; private coll.). To learn aspects of composition he made variations on the works of the old masters in the Louvre, a practice he continued for many years (e.g., Variation on a Still Life by de Heem

Self-Portrait in a Striped T-shirt (1906). Henri Matisse December 31 November 3 ) was the leading French artist of the 20th century. Particularly noted for his striking use of colour, Matisse is one of the very few indisputable giants of modern art , alongside Picasso and Kandinsky He was born Henri-‰mile-Beno®t Matisse in Le Cateau-Cambr©sis Nord-Pas-de-Calais , France, and grew up in Bohain-en-Vermandois . In he went to Paris to study law. After gaining his qualification he worked as a court administrator in Le Cateau-Cambr©sis . Following an attack of appendicitis he took up painting during his convalescence. After his recovery, he returned to Paris in to study art at the Acad©mie Julian and became a student of Odilon Redon and Gustave Moreau Influenced by the works of Paul C©zanne Gauguin Van Gogh and Paul Signac , and also by traditional Japanese art , he started to see the color as an element of composition. His art is based in a method that (according to himself) consists in boarding separately each element of his work – drawing, color, composition – and joining them in a synthesis. He was the only fauvist to develop his work to a balance between color and line, in flat compositions, without depth. He was one of the first painters in fauvism to be interested in “primitive” art. Matisse abandoned the palette of the Impressionists and established his characteristic style, with its flat, brilliant color and fluid line. His subjects were primarily women, interiors, and still lifes.

Henri Matisse
While he was regarded as a leader of radicalism in the arts, Matisse was beginning to gain the approval of a number of influential critics and collectors, including the American expatriate writer Gertrude Stein and her family. Among the many important commissions he received was that of a Russian collector who requested mural panels illustrating dance and music (both completed in 1911; now in the Hermitage, Saint Petersburg). Such broadly conceived themes ideally suited Matisse; they allowed him freedom of invention and play of form and expression. His images of dancers, and of human figures in general, convey expressive form first and the particular details of anatomy only secondarily. Matisse extended this principle into other fields; his bronze sculptures, like his drawings and works in several graphic media, reveal the same expressive contours seen in his paintings. Although intellectually sophisticated, Matisse always emphasized the importance of instinct and intuition in the production of a work of art. He argued that an artist did not have complete control over color and form; instead, colors, shapes, and lines would come to dictate to the sensitive artist how they might be employed in relation to one another. He often emphasized his joy in abandoning himself to the play of the forces of color and design, and he explained the rhythmic, but distorted, forms of many of his figures in terms of the working out of a total pictorial harmony.

Henri Matisse: a biography....
Matisse, Henri (-Émile-Benoît) (b. Dec. 31, 1869, Le Cateau, Picardy, Fr.d. Nov. 3, 1954, Nice) Matisse is often regarded as the most important French painter of the 20th century. There is a distinct Mediterranean verve in his paintings. Matisse and Picasso dominate the art of the twentieth century. Matisse was a slow, methodical man, of anxious temperament, who encouraged other artists: Picasso a bully who inhibited them. Early on in his career Matisse was viewed as a Fauvist (see below), and his celebration of bright colors reached its peak in 1917 when he began to spend time on the French Riviera at Nice and Vence. Here he concentrated on reflecting the sensual color of his surroundings and completed some of his most exciting paintings. .Matisse initially became famous as the King of the Fauves (fauve is French for wild animal) , an inappropriate name for this gentlemanly intellectual: there was no wildness in him, though there was much passion. He is an awesomely controlled artist, and his spirit, his mind, always had the upper hand over the "beast" of Fauvism.

HENRI MATISSE 1869 - 1954 Henri Matisse was born in the north of France at Le Cateau-Cambresis in 1869. It was not until he was 21 years old that he became interested in painting as a career. In 1891, Matisse began studying at the Acad, mie Julian under Bouguereau. In 1892, he transferred to Gustave Moreau's studio at the cole des Beaux-Arts. His first successful show was made in 1896 at the Salon de la Societ, Nationale des Beauz Arts. Matisse was largely influenced by the impressionist artists who preceded him, but it was not until 1902 that his own style was fully developed. In 1905 and 1906, Matisse painted with Marquet in Paris. One of his most-celebrated works of that period is "Open Window, Collioure" which employed Impressionistic pastel colors and caught a glimpse of the surroundings outside his window. After his time spent with Marquet, Matisse's style reached its peak. Matisse headed the then newly found art movement called Fauvism. His works abandoned the use of light colors; instead, he used darker, richer hues which resulted in grand-scale works of art, all in a decorative style. Matisse's journeys took him to places such as Munich, Seville, Moscow and Tangiers between the years of 1910 and 1914. After this time, he lived in Coullioure, Paris and Nice. Finally, in 1918, an exhibition featuring the works of Matisse, as well as Picasso, opened at the Guillaume Gallery.
