Worcester Collection, 1953.158 View enlargement During his long career, Henri Matisse worked in varied media, including painting, sculpture, printmaking, and collage . Matisse's art diverged from the Cubist style in his freer use of color and greater attention to the decorative effects of line and pattern. A leader of Fauvism , a movement that relied on the exaggerated, non- naturalistic use of color, Matisse later began to exhibit a more austere style closer to Cubism. Bathers by the River, a work completed in several stages between 1909 and 1916, is a supreme example of this phase in Matisse's art. It is considered one of his greatest masterpieces. The painting began as one of three panels commissioned for the residence of a Moscow collector. The first version was a stylized rendering of a pastoral scene showing five nude females near a waterfall. After the collector decided not to purchase that

CONTEXT FOR THE CREATION OF JAZZ "My curves are not crazy." - Henri Matisse, Jazz, 1947 In 1943, while convalescing from a serious operation, Henri Matisse began work on a set of collages to illustrate an, as yet, untitled and undecided text. This suite of twenty images, translated into "prints" by the stenciling of gouache paint, became known as Jazz-considered one of his most ambitious and important series of work. The years of World War II were a difficult time for Matisse and his family. He had separated from his wife Amelie in 1940 when he moved to the south of France. His wife and his daughter Marguerite were each tried and then jailed by the Gestapo for their parts in the French Resistance movement. Marguerite was tortured and then deported to the Ravensbruck concentration camp but was miraculously rescued before arriving there. The artist's two sons, Pierre and Jean were living in New York and Paris, respectively, and communication with them was intermittent at best during the war years. Jean, a sculptor, was also a Resistance fighter, training soldiers in marksmanship in his studio. Matisse himself was recovering from a bout of intestinal cancer and, unable to stand, spent great periods of time in bed. After a risky operation, Matisse remarked to his friend Albert Marquet in 1942, "Truly, I'm not joking when I thank my lucky stars for the awful operation I had, since it has made me young again and philosophical which means that I don't want to fritter away the new lease on life I've been given." It seems clear that, despite the illnesses, the change in direction in Matisse's work was already under way. This was, in fact the only period of his life when all of his various media were at play toward the same goals. Still, despite his optimism, there was pain and difficulty ahead of him as he was forced to wear a metal corset for weeks at a time. Further, he was plagued by gallstones, liver problems, deteriorating vision and, worst of all, terrible insomnia.

Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso
The younger artist, hardly two years in Paris, had not yet outgrown an art of fashionable melancholy. Nonetheless, he clearly meant to make an impression. Gertrude Stein, who hooked them up, describes him as "completely charming" before so much as mentioning his work. The Museum of Modern Art unfolds a history of modern art as much about their wariness as about their exchange. It has the impact of an epic saga, of confrontation and subterfuge across decades. But is it true? Maybe or maybe not, but it ends up producing a Modernism more lyrical, dangerous, intricate, and multiple than one might ever have expected.
Sons and daughters
Renaissance portraiture . In both, one remembers the black, arching brow and high forehead. One draws back from the brooding eyes and small, terse lips. Pablo Picasso holds a palette almost as bare as the wall behind him, but not even a brush. Everything remains a blank slate except for his bulk and determination. Henri Matisse presses forward even more. The strange blue and green shadows spill from his face onto the background without completing it, as if nothing else matters. When they exchanged works, the visitor may or may not have made the choice. Praise hardly came easily to these men, and Picasso's friends used what he brought home as a target for suction-cup darts. Yet each went out of his way to find something of himself.

Henri Matisse
During the course of his long and exceptionally varied artistic life, Henri Matisse redefined the basic principles of art and secured a place as one of the masters of the Modern period.
Born in northern France in 1869, he began painting in 1890 and quickly discarded plans for a law career. Studying art in Paris, he began to experiment with form and color, an exploration that flourished over the ensuing years through painting, sculpture, lithography and other forms.
Matisse's stature as the most significant artist in the Paris School by the onset of World War I owed largely to the influence of Leo and Gertrude Stein and their circle. Until his death in 1954, he pursued his interest in the sensual properties of color and his concept of line as a means to explore shape and space.

conventions without the express written permission of Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York. “…send me a white cane,” Henri Matisse exhorted his assistants when he completed the compositions for his illustrated book Jazz. The artist was nearly blinded by working with intense color under the brilliant Mediterranean light of the south of France ( ). To protect against glare, he used overstated hues and intense blacks. To overcome incapacitating illness, he invented a new medium, “drawing with scissors.” Cutting shapes from prepainted paper, he formed the contour and the internal area of a shape simultaneously, eliminating as he put it, “the eternal conflict between drawing and color” ( ). These cutouts, begun as compensation for illness (duodenal cancer) that confined him to a wheelchair, became another creative peak near the end of the artist’s life.

Who is Henri Matisse?
Henri Matisse was considered one of the 20th centuries most influential modernist artists whom Paris critics dubbed the King of Fauves.
His determined quest to infuse his paintings with vibrant and sun-drenched colours and to explore new ways of interpreting shapes, images and mediums, garnered Henri Matisse the distinction of becoming one of the most influential artists of his time. He and a small group of fellow artists that included Maurice de Vlaminck and Andre Derain shocked the austere Paris art world with their radical ideas and what most art aficionados considered was their total lack of discipline. But Matisse persisted. In turn Paris art critics christened his small group “the fauves”, or the “wild beasts” of the early 20th century art movement. Fauvism, though short-lived, opened the floodgates for modernist artists to express their own visions and paved the way for other forms of modern expressionism like “cubism”. Henri Emile Benoit Matisse was born in 1869 in the northern French region of Picardy. The eldest of 3 sons, he was a sickly child and suffered from what doctors diagnosed as chronic appendicitis. Anna Heloise Gerard, descendant of a long line of well-to-do tanners, doted on and over-protected her son. She also showed an artistic bent and it was from her that Henri acquired his love of shapes, textures and vibrant colours. She was the first to advise her son not to adhere to the “rules” of art, but rather listen to his emotions.

Henri Matisse
Fauves Artist There is nothing more difficult for a truly creative painter
than to paint a rose, because before he can do so he has first
to forget all the roses that were ever painted.
Henri Matisse
was born in December of 1869 in Le Cateau, France. He began painting during a convalescence from an operation, and in 1891 moved to Paris to study art. Matisse became an accomplished painter, sculptor and graphic designer, and one of the most influential artists of the 1900s. He was the leader of the Fauves , a group of artists whose style emphasized intense color and vigorous brushstrokes. He believed the arrangement of colors was as important as a painting's subject matter to communicate meaning. He avoided detail, instead using bright color and strong lines to create a sense of movement. In 1905, works by Matisse and other Fauve painters were exhibited together. The bold forms and bright colors of these paintings shocked the Paris art world. Matisse's work reflects a number of influences: the decorative quality of Near Eastern art, the stylized forms of the masks and sculpture of African, the bright colors of the French impressionists, and the simplified forms of French artist Paul Cezanne and the cubists.
