Artists You Should Know: Henri Matisse
Sharon Wall wrote to suggest Henri Matisse as an artist we should all know. She delights in his indefatigable creative spirit, noting that when he was "too old to even stand at the canvas, he took a fancy to cutting intricate paper outlines, and sketched on the wall with a charcoal strapped to a big stick." Sharon then added that she hopes she too "can still create when I am old and feeble!" (Ditto, Sharon, ditto!) Icarus is one of my favorite works, and Matisse was nearly 80 when he created it. For some reason I grin whenever I look at this paper-cut...love the way he seems to be dancing in the stars and nothing really matters except that his heart (a red dot) is happy. (Makes me want to head outside and spin around in dizzy circles, not caring a fig that someone may be watching.)
I'd like to thank Sharon for suggesting Matisse, first (and especially) because he's worth knowing, and secondly because it was a profile I'd already written (winking). Lots of non-artsy deadlines and commitments, this week, so I truly appreciate your help, Sharon!

Henri Emile Benoit Matisse (1869-1954) is regarded by many as one of the greatest figures in 20th-century art. Henri Matisse was born in December of 1869 in Le Cateau, France; the son of a middle-class family, Matisse practiced law as a young man. In 1890, however, while recovering slowly from an attack of appendicitis, his mother gave him a set of paints and he became intrigued by the practice of painting. Two years later, he went to Paris to study art formally. His training was fairly formal and Matisse's early style was quite conventional; he made many copies after the old masters. He also studied more contemporary art, especially that of the impressionists, and he began to experiment, earning a reputation as the rebel of the class. By 1899 Matisse was becoming interested in and influenced by the work of Paul Cezanne , and Vincent Van Gogh . Then, in 1903 and 1904, Matisse encountered the pointillist painting of Henri Edmond Cross and Paul Signac By 1905 Matisse had produced some of his strongest works, including a striking painting of his wife, Green Stripe (Madame Matisse). In the same year Matisse exhibited this and similar paintings along with works by his artist companions, including

MATISSE Matisse's true artistic liberation, in terms of the use of color to render forms and organize spatial planes, came about first through the influence of Gauguin, Cezanne and van Gogh, whose work he studied closely. Then, Matisse encountered the pointillist painting of Edmond Cross and Signac. By 1905 he had produced some of the boldest color images ever created. His images of dancers, and of human figures in general, convey expressive form first and the particular details of anatomy only secondarily. Matisse extended this principle into other fields; his bronze sculptures, like his drawing reveal the same expressive contours seen in his paintings. Although intellectually sophisticated, Matisse always emphasized the importance of instinct and intuition in the production of a work of art. He argued that an artist did not have complete control over color and form; instead, colors, shapes, and lines would come to dictate to the sensitive artist how they might be employed in relation to one another. He often emphasized his joy in abandoning himself to the play of the forces of color and design, and he explained the rhythmic, but distorted, forms of many of his figures in terms of the working out of a total pictorial harmony. Matisse is regarded as one of the great formative figures in 20th-century art.
Henri Émile Benoît, leader of the Fauve group, was born in Le Cateau-Cambrésis in northern France on December 31, 1869. The son of a middle-class family, he studied and began to practice law. In 1890, however, while recovering slowly from an attack of appendicitis, he became intrigued by the practice of painting. In 1892, having given up his law career, he went to Paris to study art formally. His first teachers were academically trained and relatively conservative; Matisse's own early style was a conventional form of naturalism, and he made many copies after the old masters. He also studied more contemporary art, especially that of the impressionists, and he began to experiment, earning a reputation as a rebellious member of his studio classes.

H enri Matisse was born in 1869, at Cateau-Cambresis, France. He grew up in in Bohain-en-Vermandois, near the Belgian border, the son of a seed merchant. As opposed to most of the artists covered on this site, Matisse did not begin his artist's career at a very young age. In 1889, he studied law to become clerk, but a bad case of appendicitis, and the sojourn in the hospital made him take up painting as a way to occupy his convalescing time, and two years later, he decided to abandon law, and take up art studies. After a brief stint at the Académie Julian, Matisse enrolled at the prestigious École des Beaux Arts in Paris, where he only stayed for two years due to his disillusionment with the curriculum, and artistic differences with the teachers. After discovering the works of van Gogh Monet and the impressionists, he decided to make color the central focus of his work. As opposed to the impressionists, Matisse used bright colors, and seldom painted outside.

He worked in brilliant colour at Collioure (1905) with Derain and each painted a portrait of the other. Although his palette was somewhat subdued during the 1910s, e.g. Pond at Trivaux (c. 1916) or Painter and his Model (1916), he was as little touched by Cubism as Picasso was by Fauvism. He was deeply impressed by an exhibition of Near Eastern art in Munich (1910) and visited Morocco. His love of oriental fabrics and ceramics is reflected in the exotic decorative details and character of the great Odalisques of 1920-5. From 1917 he lived at Nice, with a visit to the U.S.A. and Tahiti in 1930-1. He worked on the chapel at Vence (1949-51); his other late works include the remarkable collages of cut-out, gouache-coloured paper shapes arranged in terms of expressive abstract rhythms, e.g. I'Escargot (1953). excerpts taken from Thames and Hudson, Dictionary of Art and Artists
An excerpt from Matisse by Gerard Durozoi
In 1941, after his operation, Matisse had the idea of constructing some kind of edifice as a gesture of gratitude towards the Dominican sisters who had nursed him. But it was not until 1947 that the project resurfaced. One of his former models, who had since become Sister Jacques-Marie, showed him a sketch for a stained-glass window she had conceived for the extension of the Dominican chapel at nearby Foyer Lacordaire. Matisse offered his advice, but soon formulated his own ambitious plans for an entirely new building, with the aid of Frere Rayssiguier, a student-architect, and the architect Auguste Perret.

About the Artists: Henri Matisse, 1869-1954
History recalls Henri Matisse as one of the giants of twentieth-century art. Readily identified with the fauvist (wild beasts) art style and later with paper cut-outs, Matisse continued experiments with color and line throughout his art career. Pablo Picasso, in a rare acquiescence to the abilities of another artist, considered Matisse an artistic equal. A variety of artworks by both artists recall or reflect the work of the other.

Matisse was a nervous man and he coaxed his anxiety into serenity through painting. In his later years, while bed ridden, Henri Matisse became well known for his abstract works made of cutouts in coloured paper mixed with gouache and crayons.
Henri Matisse was born in Le Cateau in Picardy, France. In 1891 he abandoned a legal career to study under Bouguereau and Moreau. Here, he painted still lifes and landscapes in a sober range of colours.
Henri Matisse is often regarded as the most important French painter of the 20th century. His visionary experiments into different styles of painting - from his impressionistic domestic and figurative subjects to his abstract cutouts - changed our perception of the world.
