Dresden, Germany 1932 lives and works in Cologne The two grey monochromes by Gerhard Richter, which De Pont has on long-term loan, form a strong visual contrast with his multicolored, 120-part Abstraktes Bild (Abstract Painting) from 1992. In a general sense as well, Richter’s oeuvre includes highly divergent types of work. His use of different styles, however, does not indicate eclectic ambiguity. His work is an exploration of the possibilities which painting still holds: Richter is preoccupied by the apparent impossibility of achieving ‘great painting’ in this day and age. Our fragmented society is, in his view, not a very good breeding ground for painting that matches the calibre of works by the old masters. Richter originally regarded his grey paintings, produced between 1968 and 1976, as the expression of a personal powerlessness to create ‘real’ paintings, but gradually he came to realize that these works have a much more general significance. The monochrome is, in a certain sense, the limit of painting – a limit which has been explored by many artists throughout this century. By relinquishing color, Richter confined his latitude even more than had previous painters of monochromes. The grey paint, however, is manipulated in such a refined manner that very beautiful paintings come about nevertheless. The surface of one of the loans, the smaller painting on wood (1976), is animated, for instance, by the diagonal traces of the brush, which prevent the work from becoming sterile and dead. In the other grey painting (also from 1976, but reworked in 1991), the way in which the dark-grey underlying layer sometimes peers through the somewhat lighter layer on top is reminiscent of things that are obscured by fog.

NORMAN ROCKWELL LIVES!
By Austin Briggs Richard B. Woodward , Reply by Henri Zerner
In response to Scenes from the American Dream August 10, 2000 To the Editors Charles Rosen and Henri Zerner make a convincing case that certain academics have vastly exaggerated Norman Rockwell's boldness and originality as an artist ["Norman Rockwell's America," NYR Freedom from Want .John Curran's warped and funny paintings of late-twentieth- century life, one of the hits at this year's Whitney Biennial, quote as jokingly from the Old Masters as did Rockwell. One can object to such work as lightweight, and as politically driven rather than aesthetically daring. But illustration has been in style throughout the art world for more than a decade, and not just in academia. Richard B. Woodward
Southampton, New York To the Editors In their acute "Norman Rockwell's America" Charles Rosen and Henri Zerner point to the degree to which Rockwell's work marginalizes certain categories of "ordinary people." Until the 1960s, they write, Rockwell's covers show "no blacks, except for an occasional dining-car waiter or porter at a railway station." An incident concerning a cover that my late father, whose name I bear, painted for The Saturday Evening Post sheds light on the general absence of African-Americans from Rockwell's American Main Street.

Literally re-enfleshment; the return of the soul or essence after death to inhabit a new physical form. Two-thirds of the world follows a belief in Reincarnation. It is a foundation of belief in Hinduism, Buddhism, ancient Egyptian religions, for the ancient Greeks, in non-Christian Africa, for the Aborigenes in Australia, the native peoples of the Pacific Islands, for Hasidic Jews, for the Tliglit in Alaska, in Islam as an esoteric teaching and among Pagans as well as the early, original Christians. Reincarnation is viewed in various ways by different religious groups:
  • ISLAM
  • HINDUISM - Physical form is caused by the imperfections of the soul (i.e. ignorance and desire). Perfect and purify the soul through reincarnation on the SAMSARA, Wheel of Rebirth, which is influenced by the karma of the individual as he/she expresses free will. There are limitless lives with rest and reflection between lives. Hinduism is hierarchical and the lifetimes tend to stay within the caste system, although an individual can be demoted into an animal, insect or mineral if there are grave transgressions in a lifetime.
  • BUDDHISM - It is the lesser self or individual personality which dies - the Greater Self or Soul survives. Within Buddhism there is the concept of anatta or "no self"- no ego or personality which remain intact. Parents in a lifetime are chosen for the spiritual lessons they can impart. Physical existence (incarnation) ends when one overcomes desire, hatred and delusion. There are six states of rebirth:

    Survey Notes
The People's Choice Survey on Chinese Public Attitudes Toward the Visual Arts" was sponsored by Komar and Melamid Studio as an integral part of its ongoing search for a people's art worldwide. It was conducted by a research group composed of Ji-qiang Rong, an ABD at the Roper Center for Public Opinion Research, and Professor Guoming Yu and Xiayang Liu, Directors of Public Opinion Research Institute, People's University of China. The fieldwork was carried out by CCTV Survey Network (China Central Television), whose coverage of China is second only to the Urban and Rural Survey Department of China Bureau of Statistics. Between May 28 and July 5, 1995, face-to-face interviews with a crosssection of 2,462 Chinese fourteen years of age and above were conducted in respondents' homes. The sample was drawn from a universe of 590 million urban and rural residents covered by the first and second programs of CCTV. Given the fact that most surveys undertaken in China have been limited to the largest cities and new economic zones in the southern and southeastern parts of China, this survey has reached far more extensively to the rank-and-file Chinese people, and gauged their opinions toward the visual arts. A more detailed explanation of the sample composition is contained in the technical appendix. The questionnaire was provided by Komar and Melamid Studio. Its adaptation for China involved translation from English into Chinese, some modifications in wording, and additions of questions that probed attitudes toward Chinese arts and artists. Beyond the aforementioned changes, the questionnaire remained largely intact, and therefore highly comparable with those surveys Komar and Melamid have conducted in the United States, and other parts of the world for the same purpose.

The point is made that Buson remained creatively engaged in his art right up until he died. Emphatic evidence of this is Buson f s haiga, or g haiku-spirited painting, h discussed here in relation to the concept of g late style. h Clearly an older artist can look forward to continued personal growth and still additional artistic development. The implications of Buson f s late creativity are profound. " - Daniel Young " I have no idea what you're trying to accomplish here." -Matthew Mirapaul I. A REASONED PROOF a. The Nature of NewZoid NewZoid is a work of art created by Daniel Young, an artist and inventor who lives and works in New York City. NewZoid is a web site whose computer-generated core-content consists of false news headlines. The false headlines are continuously and automatically created by fragmentation and re-assembly of real news headlines. NewZoid also allows viewers to write their own headlines and see how they affect the NewZoid results. In addition, visitors may vote for favorites. On a given day all headlines for which viewers have voted can be seen. Subsequently, the twenty most popular headlines of that day are featured as "Best of Yesterday" and then stored in an archive. NewZoid is presented in an ambiguous way, most seriously as a work of generative art and therapy for the problems caused by living in a world innundated with generally useless information. Less seriously, but still with an idea of opening minds to new possibilities, it is presented as a breakthrough in communication with the innumerable parallel worlds theorized by some physicists. NewZoid has a general tone of playfulness, even with respect to its most serious intentions, in accordance with the artist's belief that purely serious communication will not work well in today's world.
