McPhee, Campbell explore artists' 'Lives' in new course "What's in a Life?" That's the question Sarah McPhee and Jean Campbell asked students in an intriguing new art history course last spring on "Artistic Biography in Early Modern Europe." "The individual artist's life as a focus of historical study is one of the marked developments of the Renaissance," explained McPhee, assistant professor of art history. "From the 16th century onward, biography has been one of the dominant modes of historical art writing. Our seminar considered artists' biographies as literature, as historical record and as aesthetic theory." Together, McPhee and Campbell took students from antiquity to modern times, considering the basic concepts of biography and artistic writing. Both instructors consider the teaching experience one of the best they have had at Emory. For what McPhee termed as "an extraordinarily demanding course," the students produced high-level critical analyses and a series of imaginative essays. During the semester they examined numerous texts, ranging from Giorgio Vasari's

Study of a Girl, by Florence Wyle, 1931
Affectionately called "The Girls," Frances Loring and Florence Wyle were also known as the first women of Canadian sculpture. Spanning more than 50 years, their careers as sculptors have given Canadians a rich body of work that may be discovered and admired in many public spaces and galleries throughout the country. Loring and Wyle's influence on Canadian art and artists has been significant. They challenged the establishment by setting forth to prove that sculpture was as important an art form as any other, and they succeeded amidst adverse conditions. At the turn of the 20th century, sculpture in Canada was still very much considered a curiosity, rather than an admired art form. The lack of patrons, the serious shortage of foundries and the relatively high cost of materials were all factors contributing to an inauspicious environment for sculptors. In addition, these artists had to rely heavily on commissions as a source of revenue. Born in Wardner, Idaho in 1887, Frances Loring studied art in her native United States, as well as in many European cities, before settling in Canada in 1913. Her decision to move to Toronto was motivated, in part, by a desire to participate in the artistic development of a young country. Loring achieved this goal and many others throughout her illustrious career.

Sculpture
Hollow , by Liz Magor, 1998-1999
Liz Magor's installations in sculpture and photography examine questions of time, identity, and existence. Magor was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1948, one of five children. She and her family moved to Prince Rupert, British Columbia, in the early 1950s. She attended the University of British Columbia from 1966 to 1968. She then moved on to the Parsons School of Design in New York City, studying there from 1968 to 1970, before finishing her formal training at the Vancouver School of Art in 1971. The Birdnester (early 1970s), Magor presented these natural objects using modern production and marketing methods. At the same time, she investigated the subtle differences that occurred amongst these seemingly identical items. Later pieces of this period, for example Four Boys and a Girl (1979), involved the creation of her own multiples; she presented the means of creation, and the finished products, together in the same work. Many of her works were created using non-traditional organic materials that changed or decayed over time, creating subtle differences amongst the objects. Her interest was in the processes of creation and destruction, as much as the product itself. Magor moved to Toronto in the early 1980s, living there until 1992. Her work took a slight change in direction, to creations that more directly told a story. She began to examine the establishment of identity through objective means, rather than identity as it evolved over time. A particular example of this is the piece

Among Men
AMONG MEN
(Part I-A: Text [version #10])
by Anne Tardos Foreword Among Men is a verbal and musical performance work for speakers and instrumentalists drawing its materials from the lives and works of woman painters, sculptors, and composers. Insofar as it "deals with them," it does so obliquely. It comprises two moderately long collage poems, each of which exists in several quite different versions, and a seventeen-page score for instrumentalists. The poems were made by a complex group of procedures involving both choice and nonintentionbal determinations. One of the poems is made by subjecting all of the entries on women composers, painters, and sculptors in two specific reference works to a series of procedures that select, exclude, combine, and separate statements and parts of statements about the lives and works of these women. The other poem comprises the first names of all of the men composers, painters, and sculptors whose entries are found in the reference works between the ones on the women. Each page of the instrumental score is a reproduction of a painting or sculpture by a woman over which has been superimposed a page or part of a page of music by a woman composer. As Tardos explains, the visual works are all those by women that are available on slides in the stores of two of New York's most prominent museums. The pages of music are from the few scores by women actually available for borrowers at New York's largest public music library.

According to the American Perceptions of Artists Survey 2002 , 27% of Americans nationwide feel that artists contribute a lot to the general good of society. The American Perceptions of Artists Survey, sponsored by The Urban Institute and conducted by Princeton Survey Research Associates in 2002, measured perceptions of artists by the American public nationwide and in selected metropolitan areas. The survey measured opinions of artists in general, individual relationships to artists, and participation in a variety of specific art forms such as music, theatre, and dance.
How much do artists contribute to society?
The survey asked how much artists and other occupations contribute to the general good of society. Nationally, 27% of people think artists contribute a lot to the general good of society while 26% say that artists contribute only a little or nothing. Far more people feel teachers (82%), doctors (76%), scientists (66%), construction workers (63%), clergy and religious leaders (52%) contribute a lot to society. Whether expressed blatantly or in a subtler manner, his work attempts to tap into those realities and dimensions that exist beyond the fringe of our perception. Referencing found imagery (often that of 40's era Hollywood), his own photographs and his unpredictable imagination, he creates "paintings about films about dreams about the neighbors." His work has been featured in numerous group shows as well as solo exhibitions. His work is sought after by a wide range of collectors including Leonardo DiCaprio, Al Pacino, David Arquette and Courteney Cox.

Salima Hashmi
by Laila Kazmi
Pakistan has been blessed with her fair share of talented artists in many different fields including the art of painting. The works of painters like the legendary A. R. Chugtai and Sadequain are among the most respected and recognized around the world. However, historically, as has been the case in the West, there are few women painters who have acquired high acclaim. In the 1996 edition of his book, Painting in Pakistan , Ijaz-ul-Hassan beautifully presents the history of painting in Pakistan starting from the Mughal era and introduces the works of close to 100 painters from the region. Of the 59 artists whose works are discussed in detail dating pre-1980s, only seven are women. In contrast, among the 38 artists each of whom are introduced briefly in the last chapter as emerging artists of the late 70s-80s, there are 12 women. One of these women is Salima Hashmi whom, in the late 80s, Hassan considered a new-comer to the world of serious art. Salima Hashmi (Photo from Humsafar) Today, some fifteen years after Ijaz-ul-Hassan first wrote about her, Salima Hashmi is one of the most well-known artists of Pakistan. Besides being an accomplished painter, she taught at Pakistan's prestigious National College of Arts (NCA) for about thirty years and served as the Principle of NCA for four years. In 1999, Salima Hashmi received Pakistan's Pride of Performance award. Today she is the Dean of School of Visual Arts at the newly established Beaconhouse National University in Lahore and she also runs her own art gallery featuring works of young artists.

A multitude of positions are confronted with the exhibiting artists' common interest in inscribing themselves with their work into collective mental and emotional processes and linking contemporary art with other topical discourses. This is also one reason for the great interest in positions from the field of film - endeavors are undertaken here to do justice to the theoretical and historical significance of the format of film, which is naturally not to be taken as autarchic, for contemporary art production. The artists elected to the board of directors (currently Matthias Herrmann, Anna Meyer, Heimo Zobernig, Johanna Kandl, Manfred Erjautz, Sandrine von Klot, Dorit Margreiter, Constanze Ruhm, Martin Walde, Willi Kopf, Hans Kupelwieser), who have developed the exhibition program together, stand for a broad perspective of complex works, which regard the viewers as part of the artistic process. General twentieth century
The early twentieth century
Many of our twentieth-century subjects appeared in the DNB 's supplements, which covered people who died after 1900 and before 1991; they include people born after 1860 but whose lives entered their most influential phase in the twentieth century. In this message I will not discuss people in the areas of art, science, literature, medicine, and business because these are gathered into all-period specialist sections. None the less, the twentieth-century supplements covered more than 9,200 people, and left a rich inheritance relating to many aspects of British life.
Several of the research editors have been active in organizing the twentieth-century articlesmost notably Robert Brown, Mark Curthoys, Alex May, Kim Reynolds, Howard Spencer, and Roger Stearn. I will introduce Robert and Kim more fully in later messages, and both Roger and Howard (who made major contributions to the dictionary while working with us) have now come to the end of their contracts, so it is Mark Curthoys who now organizes the twentieth-century area for articles on people who died before 1991. His first degree was in history at the University of Leeds, but he came to Oxford for his doctorate, and then worked on the History of Oxford University. He has published extensively but has worked full-time for the dictionary since 1993, soon after the project began, and started work on the dictionary's twentieth-century articles in 1997. When writing this message I have depended heavily on the material that he has provided.
