Artist Index 5 Centuries of Art Collection KLEE, PAUL Like many of his generation, Paul Klee's life and work were deeply affected by the horrors of Nazism. Having to flee his career teaching art in Germany, Klee returned to his native Switzerland and emerged as a completely different artist. Klee's later work evoked a greater sense of cynicism, despair and disgust at the world. The dark imagery he used for pieces such as "Death and Fire" stood in stark contrast to the joy and lightheartedness of earlier works. In addition, Klee's later work made use of darker shades and neutrals over bright, pale colors.

Famous Quotes By: Klee, Paul 1879-1940 Swiss Artist
One does not lash hat lies at a distance. The foibles that we ridicule must at least be a little bit our own. Only then will the work be a part of our own flesh. The garden must be weeded.

Critics and Criticism

Democracy with its semi-civilization sincerely cherishes junk. The artist's power should be spiritual. But the power of the majority is material. When these worlds meet occasionally, it is pure coincidence.
Klee, Paul
Democracy

A single day is enough to make us a little larger or, another time, a little smaller.

Change

In the final analysis, a drawing simply is no longer a drawing, no matter how self-sufficient its execution may be. It is a symbol, and the more profoundly the imaginary lines of projection meet higher dimensions, the better. Klee, Paul Drawing Everything vanishes around me, and works are born as if out of the void. Ripe, graphic fruits fall off. My hand has become the obedient instrument of a remote will. Klee, Paul

Munich, London, New York: Prestel Verlag, 2002, £6.95 Paul Klee: Painting Music Diaries Klee wrote: Simple movement seems banal to us. The element of time must be eliminated. Yesterday and today as simultaneous events, polyphony in music met this demand to some extent. A quintet like the one in Don Giovanni is more accessible to us than the epic movement in Tristan. Mozart and Bach are more modern than the nineteenth century. If the temporal element in music could be overcome by a consciously retrograde movement, a late flowering would be conceivable.8 Diaries Paul Klee: Painting Music , is just one of numerous recent publications on the work of this brilliant and inspiring artist. Paul Klee - An intangible man and artist
"A new centre is opening this month in Bern to celebrate Paul Klee (1879-1940), one of the greats in the pantheon of modern art.
Klee described himself as "intangible" - a perhaps fitting epithet for a man who was seen at times as both bourgeois and bohemian, and who went down in history as a Swiss artist, even though he was German.
Klee was born and died in Switzerland, but his formative years were spent in Germany, where he became famous as an artist of the avantgarde."

    Paul Klee
    Birth Year : 1879
    Death Year : 1940
    Country : Switzerland
Paul Klee was born near Berne, Switzerland. His Swiss mother was an amateur painter and his Bavarian father was a professor of music. As a child, Klee showed both musical and artistic talent, but finally decided to become an artist and went to Munich to study at the Fine Arts Academy. Klee's first exhibition held in Berne, in 1910, showed the influence of Cezanne Matisse , and van Gogh . In 1912, Klee exhibited with the Blaue Reiter, but by the following year in a series of essays that appeared in Zurich, he had begun to state his own personal and spiritual approach to art. Until 1914, Klee had worked only in black and white or in watercolors, but during that year, on a trip to Tunisia with Macke , Klee began to see the potential of his use of color. Influenced by Cubism and interested in both children's and primitive art, he created small, jewel-like paintings in a personal language. His basic themes are nature and the man-made world of buildings and machines, and his works, although simple in appearance, are complicated in their inner meaning. Klee's subtly differentiated moods range from laughter to tears. His witty titles are often as important as the paintings themselves, which combine an economy and precision of technique with the markings of a seemingly limitless imagination. Klee taught at the Bauhaus from 1921 to 1931 and then became professor of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf. In 1933, nine of his works were included in the degenerate art exhibition, the Nazis invaded his studio, and he was suspended from his post. Luckily, Klee was able to take his paintings, drawings, and writings with him when he sought refuge in his native Berne, where he continued to work until his death in 1940.

Large Image Paul Klee's Die Paukenorgel , painted during the artist's last year at the Bauhaus in Dessau, shows the influence of French Cubism, Bauhaus Constructivism, and the work of Laszlo Moholy-Nagy (1895-1946) and Lyonel Feininger in its monochromatic composition of crystallized forms. The title and details place the largely abstract work in a musical context, and bear witness to the fact that Klee was as proficient and knowledgeable in music as he was in art.
Klee painted Die Paukenorgel in 1930, his last year at the Bauhaus in Dessau. In contrast with his earlier intuitive approach to artistic creation, at this time he was conducting planimetric and stereometric experiments into the geometric origins of form. Drawing on scientific data derived from contemporary physical, mathematical, psychological, and aesthetic research, he formulated a theory of pictorial space and its formal relationships and assembled a handbook of motifs. Almost obsessively, he drew endless diagrams in which he explored the kinetic variations and rhythms of structure by projecting geometric objects in space.
