HOME News! Information Exhibitions ... Africa, Oceania, etc Paul Klee (1879-1940) Paul Klee was born on December 18, 1879, in Munchenbuchsee, Switzerland, into a family of musicians. His childhood love of music was always to remain profoundly important in his life and work. From 1898 to 1901 Klee studied in Munich, first with Heinrich Knirr, than at the Akademie under Franz von Stuck. Upon completing his schooling, he traveled to Italy: this was the first in a series of trips abroad that nourished his visual sensibilities. He settled in Bern in 1902. A series of his satirical etchings was exhibited at the Munich Secession in 1906. That same year Klee married and moved to Munich. Here he gained exposure to modern art. Klee’s work was shown at the Kunstmuseum Bern in 1910 and at Heinrich Thannhauser’s Moderne Galerie in Munich in 1911. Klee met Alexei Jawlensky, Vasily Kandinsky, August Macke, Franz Marc, and other avant-garde figures in 1911; he participated in important shows of advanced art, including the second Blaue Reiter (Blue Rider) exhibition, 1912, and the Erste deutsche Herbstsalon, 1913. In 1912 he visited Paris for the second time, where he saw the work of Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque and met Robert Delaunay . Klee helped found the Neue Münchner Secession in 1914. Color became central to his art only after a revelatory trip to North Africa in 1914. In 1920 a major Klee retrospective was held at the Galerie Hans Goltz, Munich; his Schöpferische Konfession (Creative Credo) was published; he was also appointed to the faculty of the Bauhaus. Klee taught at the Bauhaus in Weimar from 1921 to 1926 and in Dessau from 1926 to 1931. During his tenure he was in close contact qith other Bauhaus masters, such as Kandinsky and Lyonel Feininger. In 1924 the

As all Klee's exhibitions this one also will occur geographically far away from the places where he exerted his influence. This already is a tradition in the exhibitions of his works. However, in the case of the XXIII Bienal Internacional de Sâo Paulo we face a completely different situation.
Unlike Europe and North America and increasingly in Japan, where a greater number of exhibitions attest the great popularity of Klee's work, in South America his exhibitions are not frequent.
Forty years ago one of the most important of them was presented in the same place, that is to say in the II Bienal Internacional de Sâo Paulo (November 1953 to February 1954). On this occasion more than fifty works covered all of Klee's artistic journey. In that one as well as in the current exhibition the works exhibited belonged to the two great collections of Klee's works: the Foundation Paul Klee, that is a part of the Art Museum of Bern, and the collection of the Klee family.
The choice of the works that would be shown in the XXIII Bienal Internacional de Sâo Paulo also cover the period that goes from 1899 to 1940. A segment of the works aims to clarify the artistic journey of the artist. Until 1910, Klee was searching for a personal style in his work. The friendship with Alfred Kubin started in this period - Kubin started to follow up Klee's work with great interest and bought his first drawing -, was the leading factor for an increasingly close relationship between Klee and the European avant-garde artist. During his first fifteen years of activity Klee dedicated himself almost exclusively to drawing. In the illustrations that he prepared in 1911 and 1912 for the Voltaire's novel Candide ou L'Optimisme, the artist was able to reach a modernist conception of drawing. It is only after 1914 that drawing loses its prevailing role in Klee's work.

Paul Klee was born in Munchenbuchsee, Switzerland in 1879. He studied art at the Munich Academy of Fine Art (1898-1901) and later became associated with the Blaue Reiter group. Artists in the group believed that they had a responsibility to "heal the gaping wound that separates man from his environment".
Klee was living in Germany during the First World War and in 1916 was called up by the German Army . He was not sent to the front-line and spent some of his time painting aeroplanes. His war experiences appeared in his book, Diaries: 1898-1918
After the Armistice Klee taught at the Bauhaus in Weimar and Dessau. Klee was a brilliant and undogmatic teacher and a stimulating writer on art. The most important book Klee wrote during this period was, Pedagogical Stetchbook
With the emergence of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party in Germany, Klee returned to Switzerland. A large number of his paintings on display in Germany were confiscated by the Nazis as degenerate. The growth of fascism in Europe affected Klee badly and he began to suffer from acute depression. In 1935 Klee developed scleroderma, a rare debilitating disease.

Klee, Paul (1879-1940), Swiss painter, watercolorist, and etcher, who was one of the most original masters of modern art. Belonging to no specific art movement, he created works known for their fantastic dream images, wit, and imagination. His paintings and watercolors showed a mastery of delicate, dreamlike color harmonies. His work influenced all later 20th-century surrealist and nonobjective artists and was a prime source for the budding abstract expressionist movement. Klee died in Muralto, Switzerland, on June 29, 1940.

The Hayward Gallery presents a major exhibition of paintings, watercolours and drawings by the Swiss artist Paul Klee. Curated by Berlin-based art historian Robert Kudielka and artist Bridget Riley, Paul Klee: The Nature of Creation examines, for the first time, Klee’s work from the perspective of his own thinking and explores diversity as the mainspring of his creative practice.
Paul Klee (1879-1940) is one of the 20th century's most influential and much-loved artists. He is best known for his vibrant colour compositions, cosmic metaphors and fantastic landscapes. Much has been made of their inventiveness and of their humour; however Klee’s charm as a storyteller conceals a profound exploration of picture-making which produced one of the most original bodies of work realised by a modern artist.
Over 90 of Klee’s most important works made between 1914 and 1940 are presented in this single showing at the Hayward Gallery.

Continuing a series of exhibitions of the work of Paul Klee, this exhibition presents a remarkable group of twenty paintings, drawings and prints that explore the artist's close affiliation with the natural world. Paul Klee: Signs of Life investigates Klee's ongoing study of the intricate workings of plant and animal life and his invention of a strikingly coherent visual language of signs and symbols that communicate both visible and invisible reality.
From his earliest childhood Swiss-born German artist Paul Klee (1879 - 1940) expressed a profound interest in the natural world. A youthful fascination with a range of species such as insects, snails, cats and flowers grew to become the basis of the mature artist's visual vocabulary. Although he was particularly drawn to more humble creatures and plants, Klee learned to distill even complex organisms, including human beings, to their most fundamental aspects. By revealing the most elemental characteristics and mechanisms of the life forms he examines, Klee demonstrates each living thing's uniqueness and facilitates our understanding of the ultimate similarities between diverse species.

Paul Klee (1879-1940), a Swiss, showed both musical and artistic talent as a child, but eventually decided to study art, moving to Munich to the Fine Arts Academy. He first exhibited in Berne in 1910; two years later he showed work with the Blaue Reiter. A visit to Tunisia with his friend Macke influenced his approach to colour, and his interest in Cubism, together with a fascination with children's and primitive art, led to the development of a very personal and distinctive style. Klee taught at the Bauhaus from 1921 to 1931. Appointed Professor of Fine Arts in Dusseldorf, he moved there but in 1933 his art was denounced by the Nazis and he had to flee to his birthplace in Berne, fortunately escaping with many paintings, drawings and writings intact. He continued to paint until his death in 1940. In Copula by Paul Klee
