Van Gogh's Literary Sources
'I am a man of passions ... To mention just one by way of example, I have a more or less irresistible passion for books and the constant desire to improve myself, to study, if you like, just as I have a need to eat bread. You will understand that.' Vincent van Gogh to Theo, Cuesmes, Borinage (Belgium), circa 22-24 June 1880, letter 154/133 . Vincent van Gogh was a passionate reader, and his letters to his brother Theo and fellow artists Anton van Rappard and Emile Bernard are full of references to books. Literature was one of the principal sources of Van Gogh's intellectual, spiritual and artistic development. He learned about life in the books he read, sought explanations or confirmation for the choices he made and sometimes even found solace. He also used books as study material, and as a source of inspiration for his own work. In order to fully understand Van Gogh's work it is important to research the literary sources that inspired him. The Van Gogh Museum has studied Vincent van Gogh's correspondence for many years. His letters contain over 800 references to literary works by more than 150 authors. A bibliography compiled from these references has been used to reconstruct Vincent's book collection. The books and journals he mentions in his correspondence can be consulted in the Van Gogh Museum library. The following are a selection from these sources. Jules Michelet

83. Vincent Art Gallery: About Vincent Van Gogh
These words were said by the famous artist Camille Pissarro to his friends aboutvincent van gogh when he tried to find a buyer for his vincent s works.
http://www.vincent.nl/gallery/about/vangogh.htm
Art Gallery About Vincent van Gogh G ogh, Vincent Willem van , Dutch painter, whose work represents the archetype of expressionism , the idea of emotional spontaneity in painting. He was born in Groot-Zundert . His first paintings of peasants, dark and somber, sometimes crude, demonstrate van Gogh's desire to express his vision of the misery and poverty of humanity. His evolution from an inept but impassioned novice into a truly original master was remarkably rapid: all the works which you will see here were produced in the space of just ten years. Van Gogh himself provided a moving account of his artisitc revolution in the letters he wrote to his family and friends, in particular to his brother Theo. Many of these have survived and they give us valuable information about what he read, saw and thought. As a painter, he was largely self-taught. With the help of text books, a number of lessons at the art academies of Brussels and Antwerp, visits to museums and advice from artist-friends, he became familiar with traditional practices. His introduction to modern French art movement encouraged him to experiment. As years went by he developed his own, highly distinctive style of painting, using expressive brushstrokes and vivid colours, which has since inspired many generations of artists. "This man will become crazy or will go far beyond our imagination and leave us behind him." These words were said by the famous artist

Content of this page : Vincent van Gogh was dreaming of the day, when people could see all his works together. Then they would understand him. Vincent van Gogh wrote this in a letter to his brother Theo. Indeed, viewing his complete works clarifies a lot. I have now gone through it a dozen times. Each time new aspects come up. Vincent van Goghs works are sermons. It is a social tragedy, that poverty makes poor persons invisible for other people. Vincent van Gogh gives faces to the poor. I wonder if all the very rich owning early van Goghs recognise the faces on these pictures as those of real persons.
What do they feel when such a person crosses their way?

Thierry W. Despont, the acclaimed New York architect and designer who has turned his talents to the residences of such moguls as Bill Gates, Conrad Black and Calvin Klein, is now dabbling in museum shows. Not just any show, but one dedicated to the most popular artist of all time Vincent van Gogh. It's true that Despont is not completely new to museum work, for he designed the period interiors for the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles not so long ago. But this new art-world alliance of Despont and van Gogh is well worth a closer look. Despont's design of the current Van Gogh Museum exhibition, "The Musée Imaginaire of Van Gogh," pays homage to the Dutch artist on his 150th birthday. While museum shows dedicated to van Gogh have been capturing the spotlight over the past several years, this exhibition is no mere retread. A highly cerebral yet moving examination of the artist, the show features many of the more than 1,500 paintings that we know van Gogh was aware of paintings the artist cited in his thousands of letters, or pictures he clipped from the London Illustrated News and kept in his scrapbooks, or prints or other artworks in his own personal collection. "Very few artists have left such a comprehensive documentation of the very art inspiring them," says John Leighton, director of the museum.

Art books and other products for artists to buy online Artist Names Gogh, Vincent van Vincent Van Gogh (1853-90) was a Dutch post Impressionist painter. Van Gogh worked as an art dealer, a teacher in England and a missionary among coalminers before becoming an artist in about 1880. He had a limited training in The Hague and in Antwerp, where he studied the works of Rubens and Japanese prints and moved to Paris in 1886. In Paris Van Gogh adopted the style of Impressionism and Pointillism but it was in Arles in 1888 that Van Gogh painted his best known paintings including sunflowers, but only one work was sold in his lifetime. Van Gogh famously cut off part of his left ear and in 1889 went into a mental asylum at Saint-Rémy. ‘Wheatfield with Crows’ was painted shortly before his suicide. Van Gogh (Taschen Specials)
