Van Gogh Museum (Vincent van Gogh Foundation) From Amsterdam to New York and Tokyo: Vincent van Gogh's fame spans the world. For experts and amateurs alike, as well as artists, Van Gogh is the most driven artist of all time, the man who immersed himself body and soul in his art, who introduced passion in his brushwork and emotion in his palette. Due to his dramatic life, moreover, he became the prototype of the impassioned, hard-working but misunderstood and melancholy artist. His impact on the further development of painting was tremendous. It may safely be assumed that all 20th-century artists knew Van Gogh's work and that virtually all of them were directly or indirectly influenced by him. The exhibition Go gh Modern encompassed work by important post-war artists whose art is inconceivable without Van Gogh's example. Paintings were exhibited that reveal Van Gogh 's inspiration in terms of style and expression. In addition, a selection has been made of artists who, like their 19th-century predecessor, gave art a new direction and whose attitudes and views were nothing short of extreme.
The presentation encompassed paintings, sculptures and videos by various artists and movements - from Appel and Kiefer to Nauman and Warhol. The public could experience just how topical Van Gogh's art is, and how it continues to mark contemporary art. Looking at the work of his 20th-century colleagues also refined our understanding of Van Gogh: what influence do his emulators exert on our observation of the original?

Vincent Van Gogh
Vincent Van Gogh is famous for his brave use of intense primary colours and thick brush strokes in his paintings. Vincent Van Gogh suffered from a serious mental illness during the later parts of his career. It was during this time that he produced some of this greatest works. His paintings are primarily inspired by the Impressionist but Vincent manages to project more expression and emotion into his paintings. In fits of madness, Vincent cut off his own right ear lobe. With his head still bandaged, he painted a self-portrait of himself. Vincent managed to instill a strange energy in the painting, that is both haunting and sympathetic. Eventually, Vincent admitted himself into an asylum where he continued to paint while he slipped further into insanity. When he took his life 1890, he had painted well over 800 paintings in total. After his death, his works became immensely popular and were sold for record-breaking sums of money. Today Vincent Van Gogh is regarded as one of the greatest painters of his time. < Back Works Books Websites

Vincent van Gogh, a genius to some and a madman to others, is often considered the greatest Dutch painter after Rembrandt. van Gogh's striking and exuberant paintings were all produced during a period of only ten years. His Post-Impressionist work hauntingly conveys through forceful colour, aggressive brushwork and contoured forms, the anguish of a mental illness that eventually resulted in suicide.
After failing in both his career and love life, van Gogh turned inward, pursuing a position in the ministry. In 1880, disenchanted with priesthood, he discovered art as his new mission. His earliest works were scenes of peasant life, but after a trip to Paris in 1886, where he encountered the works of the Impressionists and the Japanese prints en vogue at the time, he dramatically transformed his style from darkly collared realism to vibrant expressionism.
van Gogh moved to rural Arles, France in 1888, but continued to struggle with a nervous disorder and depression. He soon committed himself to an asylum at St. Remy. While hospitalised, he continued to paint and produced The Starry Night, one of his most compelling works. van Gogh spent the final year of his life in Auvers-sur-Oise, a small village north west of Paris. There, he painted feverishly to complete Houses at Auvers, which he worked on from a street near the home of his physician. He completed shortly before his death in 1890. Tormented by mental illness, van Gogh shot himself at the age of thirty-seven.

Vincent Van Gogh
Vincent Willem van Gogh is born on March 30, 1853, in Zundert, in the south of the Netherlands, as the oldest son of Theodorus van Gogh, a preacher and Anna Cornelia Carbentus. Four years later, in 1857,Vincent's favorite brother, Theodorus (Theo), is born. Vincent van Gogh at age of 13. In June 1873, Vincent is moved to Goupil in London. Daily contact with works of art kindles his appreciation of paintings and drawings. He admires the realistic paintings of peasant life by Jean-Fran§ois Millet and Jules Breton. Gradually Vincent loses interest in his work and turns to the Bible. He is transferred to Paris, to London and Paris again, to then be dismissed from Goupil's in March 1876. Driven by a growing desire to help his fellow man, he decides to become a clergyman. Vincent van Gogh at age of 19. Vincent returns to England in 1876 to work as a teacher and assistant preacher at a boarding school. In November, Van Gogh delivers his first sermon. His interest in evangelical Christianity and ministering to the poor becomes obsessional. Due to a lack of professional perspectives, he returns to Amsterdam in 1877. When he is refused admittance in theology school, Vincent briefly enters a missionary school near Brussels and in December 1878 leaves for the Borinage, a coal-mining area in southern Belgium, to work as a lay preacher. Vincent identifies with the miners, sleeping on the floor and giving away his belongings. His extreme commitment draws disfavor from the church and he is dismissed.

Artists Pay Homage to the Master Painter Van Gogh at the Museum of TTU
LUBBOCK, TEXAS -The Museum of Texas Tech University is pleased to announce the opening of Homage to Van Gogh , an exhibition of works by contemporary artists paying tribute to the influences of Vincent van Gogh's art today. The exhibition will be on view from March 24 through May 5, 2002 , in the Museum, located at Fourth Street and Indiana Avenue. The exhibition contains 75 artworks by such artists as Lucien Clergue, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, David Hockney, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Larry Rivers, and many others. The works are done in homage to van Gogh's influence upon each artist's own works. The media used is as varied as the works themselves, each creator expressing his or her own views about Vincent van Gogh, the man and the artist. "At this very moment, someone, somewhere in the world is creating an artwork as tribute to Vincent van Gogh. Scorned, neglected and ridiculed in his lifetime, his example now reigns paramount as the starting point for all aspiring and budding artists. Acknowledgments and homage pour in from the most unlikely corners of society," comments Jeffrey Spalding, professor of art and director of the Appleton Museum of Art in Ocala, Florida. Spalding notes that as "An inveterate loner, van Gogh engendered no special protégés - no school of followers. Unlike Monet, Picasso, Matisse or Pollock no stylistic movement or second generation emerged to champion or extend the legacy of van Gogh's artistic vision. This is quite unexpected, since most artists emulate in some way the art of prior masters. Picasso proclaimed: 'All artists borrow; great artists steal.' Maybe here it is, simply: Genius prevails. The perfection of the resolution of van Gogh's own personal vision, closes out all would be stylistic bandits."

A 19th-century painter, Van Gogh is almost as famous for his mental instability as for his vivid paintings. His career as an artist lasted only 10 years and coincided with frequent bouts of depression and anguish; in a famous 1888 incident he slashed off his left earlobe with a razor. He is closely associated with the town of Arles in the south of France, where he created many of his greatest paintings. Among his best-known works are The Potato Eaters Starry Night (1889), and Irises (1889). He died in Auvers, France two days after shooting himself in the chest with a pistol. FOUR GOOD LINKS

Although almost wholly unknown during his brief lifetime, the painter Vincent Willem van Gogh is today probably the most widely known and appreciated representative of postimpressionism. His work became an important bridge between the 19th and 20th centuries; it was particularly influential in the evolution of both fauvism and German expressionism.
Van Gogh clearly showed marked artistic talent even as a child, but neither he nor his family (his father was a Dutch clergyman) imagined that painting would become his career. Instead, at the age of 16, he went to work for Goupil and Company, an art gallery with which one of his uncles had long been associated; he was dismissed in 1876. Other false starts included a job in a Dordrecht bookstore during the spring of 1877, theological studies at the University of Amsterdam, and, from November 1878 to July 1879, service as a lay missionary in a coal-mining district in Belgium.
In 1880, Vincent chose art as a vocation and became dependent on his brother for money. Indeed, for the next 10 years Theo, who had also gone to work for Goupil, sent an allowance to Vincent, encouraged him to work, and wrote regularly. Vincent's thinking during his short but prolific career (approximately 750 paintings, 1,600 drawings, 9 lithographs, and 1 etching) is well documented in more than 700 letters that he wrote to Theo and others.
