Abstract
From the Paper:

Vincent van Gogh is generally considered one of the greatest painters in the history of art. In spite of his abridged life span, his creativity and productivity cranked out a total of more than 800 paintings and an equal number of drawings. A simple mathematical calculation revealed a stunning number: (on average) one painting AND one drawing every single week. However, overshadowed by his mental problems, some people, now or then, tend to conclude this enormous production as mere brash and outbursting works lacking of delicacy and accuracy. Vincent van Gogh said, 'If I work hard, don't I deserve bread?' The world obviously thought not, and played the cruel trick of waiting until he was dead before inundating him with dough. Vincent's whole life was a high-pressure endurance course for the self-esteem, punctuated by an ever more painful series of 'Pick yourself up, dust yourself down, and start again' exercises. He was born near Brabant in Holland, the eldest of a brood of eight (or youngest of a brood of none). When he was 16, uncle fixed him up with a job at art dealers Goupil and Co. His employers decided he didn't have what it takes to move the merchandise and gave him the brush off. He then decided to emulate a lion-taming lamb and went into teaching but failed to achieve his attainment target (i.e. keep the kids in the classroom?). Next he returned to Holland to be a minister but that didn't work so he began his artistic career, supported by art-dealer brother Theo.Theo attempted to flog Vince's pics but the perceptive art-buying public wouldn't touch them, variously describing them as 'disgusting' and 'monstrosities'. After meeting Gauguin, Vincent attempted to set up an ideal little artistic community but fell out with his new pal and cut off a chunk of his own ear. All these little traumas took their toll and in 1889 he became a voluntary patient at a hospital for damaged minds. After his discharge he went into artistic overdrive (as if he knew he hadn't long) then shot himself in the wedding tackle and died. In between all these crises he managed to paint 800 pictures, but only ever sold one (...or was it none?)

Vincent van Gogh once said, "An artist needn't be a clergyman or a churchwarden, but he certainly must have a warm heart for his fellow men." Van Gogh might be better known for his bloody ear than his warm heart, but you gotta love the sentiment. Young Vincent was doomed from the start. He was born a year to the day after a stillborn fetus, also coincidentally named "Vincent." Now, 150 years ago, people were considerably less sensitive to such things than they are today, and the art of psychology was only in its infancy. Nevertheless, it's not real hard to see how issues could arise from this state of affairs. Certainly, Vinnie had no shortage of issues. After a religious education and a brief stint at boarding school, young van Gogh dropped out for reasons which remain unknown. Vincent was notable during this time for a complete absence of interest in art. When Vincent left school, however, art became a central part of his life... in the same way that Big Macs become a central part of many teenagers' lives today. van Gogh took a job selling art for a Netherlands dealer. After a few years working near home, van Gogh was transferred to London and never looked back. "Those Dutchmen had hardly any imagination or fantasy, but their good taste and their scientific knowledge of composition were enormous," he wrote.

Van Gogh and Japonisme
Pere Tanguy The term Japonisme came up in France in the seventies of the 19th century to describe the craze for Japanese culture and art. Van Gogh like so many other Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artists was one of the admirers of Japanese art. The Japanese influence is obvious in his art work.
The Fad For All Things Japanese
With the treaty of Kanagawa in 1854 between the American delegation headed by Navy commander Matthew Calbraith Perry (1794-1858) and the Japanese shogunate government, a period of 216 years of Japanese isolation ended. In the years following, huge numbers of Japanese artifacts and handicraft articles flowed to Europe, mainly to France and the Netherlands. The Paris Exposition Universelle in 1867 had a Japanese stand and showed Japanese art objects to the amazed public.
