Vincent van Gogh is well-regarded as one of the greatest and most famous artists, ever. His life and work has inspired and influenced much of art history since his tragic death in 1890. In fact, what many people today consider to be the archetypical "artist personna" is largely a result of his influence. August 2, 2005: Impact on Art! Vincent van Gogh
Dutch painter active mainly in France and counted a post-impressionist. Almost unknown in his lifetime, he was, during his years as full-time artist, totally dependent on his brother, Theo, who worked for the dealer Goupil in Paris, and supplied him with paints and canvases. Vincent wrote many letters to him, also to other relatives and artist friends. His reputation grew quite quickly after his death. Articles with reproductions and the publication of some of these letters began in Paris in 1891 (the first by Bernard); from 1903 on albums of reproductions of his work and then monographs, the first in 1911, were published in Amsterdam. By that time a number of artists, French and foreign, had been stimulated by the work of Van Gogh, notably the Fauves and the Brucke The drama and pathos of his life and knowledge of his spiritual and psychological crises, had sharpened this awareness. Today Van Gogh is one of the most highly priced and one of the most popular artists in the world, yet emphasis on his madness and the passionate execution of his paintings suggests that he is not well understood.

Gogh, Vincent (Willem) van (b. March 30, 1853, Zundert, Neth.d. July 29, 1890, Auvers-sur-Oise, near Paris), generally considered the greatest Dutch painter and draughtsman after Rembrandt . With Cézanne and Gauguin the greatest of Post-Impressionist artists. He powerfully influenced the current of Expressionism in modern art. His work, all of it produced during a period of only 10 years, hauntingly conveys through its striking colour, coarse brushwork, and contoured forms the anguish of a mental illness that eventually resulted in suicide. 1885 (180 Kb); Oil on canvas, 81.5 x 114.5 cm; Rijksmuseum Vincent van Gogh, Amsterdam
From 1881 to 1885 van Gogh lived in the Netherlands, sometimes in lodgings, supported by his devoted brother Theo, who regularly sent him money from his own small salary. In keeping with his humanitarian outlook he painted peasants and workers, the most famous picture from this period being The Potato Eaters (Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam; 1885). Of this he wrote to Theo: `I have tried to emphasize that those people, eating their potatoes in the lamp-light have dug the earth with those very hands they put in the dish, and so it speaks of manual labour, and how they have honestly earned their food'. In 1885 van Gogh moved to Antwerp on the advice of Antoine Mauve (a cousin by marriage), and studied for some months at the Academy there. Academic instruction had little to offer such an individualist, however, and in February 1886 he moved to Paris, where he met

Painter, Draftsman
Dutch
"I can very well do without God both in my life and in my paintings, but I cannot, ill as I am, do without something which is greater than I, which is my life ( the power to create,"Vincent van Gogh wrote to his devoted brother Theo. Art was van Gogh's means of personal, spiritual redemption, and his voluminous letters to Theo offer profound insight into the artistic struggle. Van Gogh became an artist in 1881. Though he studied briefly in Antwerp and Paris, he was largely self-taught. He ultimately chose to live in the country, and most of his paintings capture his deep affinity for nature. Theo, an art dealer, introduced Vincent to Paris's most advanced painters, and his work changed under the influences of Edgar Degas, Paul Gauguin, Georges Seurat, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. The flatness of color and shape in Japanese woodcuts also inspired him. Van Gogh's color expressed his emotions as he responded to the world. His insistence on color's expressive possibilities led him to develop a corresponding expressiveness in applying pigment. His brushstrokes of thick, opaque paint almost seem drawn. His often violently interacting colors and forms and strong expressive line influenced nearly every artistic movement that came after him: Symbolism, Fauvism, Expressionism, and beyond.
