Paul Gauguin Biography 1848-1903
Paul Gauguin, 1888 Paul Gauguin was born in Paris as the son of a journalist and a Peruvian mother. When the family had to leave France for political reasons, Paul's father died during the sea voyage to Peru. And Paul was nineteen years old, when he lost his mother.
From Wealthy Banker to Poor Artist
Gauguin's early career was out of the normal. He first worked as a sailor for the French merchant fleet for six years. Then he turned to banking and became a successful stock-broker at the Paris stock-exchange. In 1871 Paul Gauguin started to paint as a hobby. He had seen an exhibition of Impressionist paintings and was deeply impressed. The passion for painting should dominate his life for the good and for the bad. But he was still firmly rooted in his bourgois life and he had a solid job as a banker. In 1873 he married Mette Gad, a Danish from Copenhagn. He had five children with her. With his good income as a stockbroker, Gauguin could afford to buy several paintings by Manet

Paul Eugène Henri Gauguin: biography
born june 7th 1848, Paris. died Marquesas, May 9, 1903 Paul Gauguin was a French post impressionist painter whose lush color, flat two-dimensional forms, and subject matter helped form the basis of modern art. Gauguin was born in Paris on June 7, 1848, into a liberal middle-class family. After an adventurous early life, including a four-year stay in Peru with his family and a stint in the French merchant marine, he became a successful Parisian stockbroker, settling into a comfortable bourgeois existence with his wife and five children.
In 1874, after meeting the artist Camille Pissarro and viewing the first impressionist exhibition, he became a collector and amateur painter. He exhibited in five of the eight impressionist exhibitions. In 1883 he gave up his secure existence to devote himself to painting; his wife and children, without adequate subsistence, were forced to return to her family. From 1886 to 1891 Gauguin lived mainly in rural Brittany (except for a trip to Panama and Martinique from 1887 to 1888), where he was the center of a small group of experimental painters known as the school of Pont-Aven. Under the influence of the painter Émile Bernard, Gauguin turned away from impressionism and adapted a less naturalistic style, which he called synthetism.

Pissaro
, who gave his advice generously, and later by Cezanne . But gradually Gauguin broke away from Impressionism and adopted a bolder style - radical simplifications of drawing, brilliant, pure, bright colors, an ornamental character of composition, and deliberate flatness of planes, the style, which he called ‘synthetic symbolism’.
In 1883, Gauguin quit the stock exchange; financial troubles weren't long in waiting. In 1885, he left his family in Copenhagen with his parents-in-law, and returned to Paris. In 1886 and 1888, he worked in Brittany, beside Emile Bernard, Laval and Meyer de Haan, he executed some of his most expressive works, such as Breton Girls Dancing, Pont-Aven. The Yellow Christ. (1889) and Vision after the Sermon; Jacob Wrestling with the Angel.
In October-December 1888, following the persistent suggestions of his art-dealer, Theo van Gogh, Gauguin visited the man's brother, Vincent , in Arles. His stay with the sick artist, whom he disliked and even despised as a painter, and never bothered to conceal this, finished after a Van Gogh cut off his own ear.

Paul Gauguin's Genesis of a Picture : A Painter's Manifesto and Self-Analysis
by Dario Gamboni Fig. 1 Paul Gauguin, Mana'o tupapa'u , 1892. Oil on burlap mounted on canvas. Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo Introduction
There is an element of contradiction in the art historian's approach to interpreting the creative process. While artistic creativity is seen as stemming from the psychology of the creator, there is a tendency to deny the artist possession of direct or rational access to its understanding. Both attitudes have their roots in romantic art theory. These attitudes imply, on the one hand, that the artist's psyche is the locus of creation, and, on the other, that intuition and the unconscious play the major roles. Such ideas remained prevalent in the twentieth century, as attested, for example, by the famous talk given in April 1957 by Marcel Duchamp under the title "The Creative Act," which defined the artist as a "mediumistic being." Genesis of a Picture
A good case study of the problematics of using an artist's own writings to interpret his or her work is Paul Gauguin's written account of his Mana'o tupapa'u of 1892 (Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo; fig. 1). The painting is one of Gauguin's most famous works and it had a special importance for him, as demonstrated by the high price he asked for it, its numerous variations, and its inclusion in the

Gauguin, (Eugène-Henri-) Paul
Gauguin, (Eugène-Henri-) Paul (b. June 7, 1848, Paris, Fr.d. May 8, 1903, Atuona, Hiva Oa, Marquesas Islands, French Polynesia), one of the leading French painters of the Postimpressionist period, whose development of a conceptual method of representation was a decisive step for 20th-century art. After spending a short period with Vincent van Gogh in Arles (1888), Gauguin increasingly abandoned imitative art for expressiveness through colour. From 1891 he lived and worked in Tahiti and elsewhere in the South Pacific. His masterpieces include the early Vision After the Sermon (1888) and Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going? Although his main achievements were to lie elsewhere, Gauguin was, to use a fanciful metaphor, nursed in the bosom of Impressionism . His attitudes to art were deeply influenced by his experience of its first exhibition, and he himself participated in those of 1880, 1881 and 1882. The son of a French journalist and a Peruvian Creole, whose mother had been a writer and a follower of Saint-Simon, he was brought up in Lima, joined the merchant navy in 1865, and in 1872 began a successful career as a stockbroker in Paris. In 1874 he saw the first Impressionist exhibition, which completely entranced him and confirmed his desire to become a painter. He spent some 17,000 francs on works by
