The game of chess is the symbol of logic; logical, that is, unless you play it on both sides of a board that shifts between a tabletop and the clouds. Imagine a strange checkered surface where you can climb under the squares and land up on the top again. Such things are barely possible in our imagination, but they can happen magically in the world of art. M. C. Escher, the Dutch artist famous for his prints showing realistic illusions and puzzles in perspective, was born one hundred years ago. The centennial of his birth has been celebrated in a record-breaking exhibit at The National Galle ry in Washington, at an international conference in Rome th is past summer, and now in an exhibit in Connecticut at Norwalk's Artists' Market. Although his art is unmatched, Escher charted a remarkable course that others have followed. In this unprecedented exhibit, Artists' Market is showcasing original prints by M. C. Escher alongside the work of a dozen printmakers and sculptors who take the artist's unique sense of imagination and fantasy to new places.

M.C. Escher (1898-1972)
Special thanks to the Microsoft Corporation for permission to use following biographical information from
M.C. Escher was a Dutch graphic artist, who is noted for his distinctive prints depicting intricate interlocking patterns and optical illusions. He was especially accomplished in lithography and wood engraving. Escher’s early work consists mainly of landscapes and townscapes, but beginning about 1936 his work became increasingly concerned with scenes of his own creation, especially with the repeating patterns and spatial illusions for which he is best known. Escher’s first images in this realm took the form of elaborate patterns in which repeated figures of stylized animals, birds, or fish densely interlock, leaving no spaces between the figures. From about 1940 his work became more fantastic in its spatial effects. In images of bizarre buildings, Escher ingeniously toyed with the viewer’s perceptions, creating such optical illusions as staircases that appear to lead both upward and downward in the same direction. He also explored the perceptual conflict created by a surface that appears to be both flat and three-dimensional. In the lithograph Reptiles (1943), for example, parts of a stylized pattern of interlocking alligators seem to come to life, walking off the edge of the paper. Although Escher had no training in mathematics or sciences, his precise and analytical approach to the visual world has had an especially strong appeal to mathematicians and to psychologists interested in visual perception.

M.C. ESCHER Artist Name at birth: Maurits Cornelis Escher Escher's mind-bending prints and drawings playfully explore perspective, mirror images and physical space. Two of his best-known prints, "Relativity" (1953) and "Ascending and Descending" (1960), feature staircases which seem to defy gravity and run in impossible directions. His most popular work may be "Hand With Reflecting Sphere" (1935), an image of himself as seen in a globe held in his outstretched hand. Escher also is known for his tessellations mosaics of repetitive designs in which positive and negative images interconnect and sometimes blend into one another. Though Escher was not trained in math, his work has been embraced by mathematicians who see his drawings as artistic depictions of geometric principles.

On Being a Graphic Artist
"On Being a Graphic Artist" PDF file)
  • It is human nature to want to exchange ideas, and I believe that, at bottom, every artist wants no more than to tell the world what he has to say. I have sometimes heard painters say that they paint "for themselves": but I think they would soon have painted their fill if they lived on a desert island. The primary purpose of all art forms, whether it’s music, literature, or the visual arts, is to say something to the outside world; in other words, to make a personal thought, a striking idea, an inner emotion perceptible to other people’s senses in such a way that there is no uncertainty about the maker's intentions. The result of the struggle between the thought and the ability to express it, between dream and reality, is seldom more than a compromise or an approximation.

Maurits Cornelis Escher During his lifetime, M.C. Escher made 448 lithographs, woodcuts and wood engravings and over 2000 drawings and sketches. Like some of his famous predecessors, - Michelangelo Leonardo da Vinci Durer and Holbein, he was left-handed. Apart from being a graphic artist, he illustrated books, designed tapestries, postage stamps and murals. Escher was born in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands, the fourth and youngest son of a civil engineer. After 5 years the family moved to Arnhem where Escher spent most of his youth. After failing his high school exams, Maurits ultimately was enrolled in the School for Architecture and Decorative Arts in Haarlem. After only one week, he informed his father that he wanted to study graphic art instead of architecture; he had shown his drawings and linoleum cuts to his graphics teacher Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita, who encouraged him to continue with graphic arts. After finishing school, he traveled extensively through Italy, where he met his wife Jetta Umiker, whom he married in 1924. They settled in Rome, where they stayed until 1935. During these 11 years, Escher would travel each year throughout Italy, drawing and sketching for the various prints he would make when he returned home. Many of these sketches he would later use for various other lithographs and/or woodcuts and wood engravings, for example the background in the lithograph Waterfall stems from his Italian period, or the trees reflecting in the woodcut Puddle, which are the same trees Escher used in his woodcut "Pineta of Calvi", which he made in 1932.

Model Unit (Grade 7)
M.C.Escher: The Poet of the Impossible
Introduction
In this unit, we see integration of two subjects (mathematics and visual arts) with the concrete (the art of M.C. Escher). Although it addresses the Grade 7 level, it could easily be modified and adapted to respond to the needs of students at other grades. Throughout the unit, suggestions and additional activities have been provided to facilitate these modifications and adaptations. Still other suggestions have been included at the end of the unit. There are several levels and ways of achieving integration. The following unit is a model only; hence, teachers can use other methods of integration. It is in fact recommended that teachers experiment with a number of methods for carrying out integration within mathematics, with other subject areas and with everyday life.
General Description of the Unit
An overview (chart) of the unit can be found on the next page. It gives teachers the opportunity to visualize the stages to come by providing a summary of the unit, the learning objectives, the teaching methods encountered, the suggested evaluation methods, the preparations to be made before starting the unit, the resources and materials to be used, and the vocabulary and structures the students will encounter. The unit proceeds in several stages:
  • a start-up stage based on the concrete art in daily life;
