by Dexter Sear
Kalaheo, Hawaii U.S.A. Born June 7, 1898, Escher was a self proclaimed graphic artist and self denounced studio artist. He became fascinated with the geometric processes of filling the plain (tessellation) and his imagery took a biased towards asymmetrical natural forms of which insects were often his subject matter. He made the comment that insects are generally best recognized from above; his prints reflecting this belief. In searching for the possible inspiration behind his insect imagery, it is hard to find much more than an obsession with process and order although he developed themes such as evolution and metamorphosis. Escher's biographies do expose some examples of his feelings towards nature. While observing 70,000 year old Lascaux cave paintings, Escher noted that prehistoric artists were in direct contact with nature unlike contemporary artists who are generally exposed to nature through what he considered an obstructive educational system. He later made an interesting analogy; illustrations compare to the graphic print as a caterpillar does to a butterfly. He went on to explain that illustrations are not acceptable as autonomous manifestations of art but that they are only an interim stage. Therefore, the illustration, like the caterpillar, as the end result is inherently dissatisfying. Escher respected the order he found within the insect realm. He commented that the graphic arts inherent fascination comes from the desire to multiply and that the beauty of the craft was in the forced limitations resulting from the technique.

Maurits Escher was always referred to by his parents as Mauk. He was brought up by his father, George Escher, who was a civil engineer, and his second wife Sarah who was the daughter of a government minister. He lived with his four older brothers, Arnold, Johan, Berend, and Edmond. Maurits attended both elementary and secondary school in Arnhem between 1912 and 1918, where he failed to shine in many of his subjects, but exhibited an early interest in both music and carpentry. People expressed the opinion that he possessed a mathematical brain but he never excelled in the subject at any stage during his schooling and treated the subject with some considerable unease. He wrote [7]:- At high school in Arnhem, I was extremely poor at arithmetic and algebra because I had, and still have, great difficulty with the abstractions of numbers and letters. When, later, in stereometry solid geometry , an appeal was made to my imagination, it went a bit better, but in school I never excelled in that subject. But our path through life can take strange turns.

Escher Website Maurits Cornelis Escher: la ilimitada repetición de lo mismo (in Spanish) "After Escher had said goodbye to the south [in 1936], his work took a direction that was eventually to lead to his becoming famous. From now on he was no longer concerned with expressing his observations - or only rarely - but rather with the construction of the images in his own mind. These images dealt with the regular division of the plane , limitless space, rings and spirals in space, mirror images, inversion, polyhedrons, relativities , the conflict between the flat and the spatial , and impossible constructions . Even in his Haarlem period, and occasionally during his years in Italy, he had made hesitant moves in this direction, but only now did they take shape systematically and start to absorb him. He had the feeling that until then he had merely been doing finger exercises.

Maurits Cornelis Escher, or more commonly M.C. Escher, was born at Leeuwarden in 1898. He studied at the Technical School of Art, Haarlem from 1919 to 1922 where he was inspired by Italian landscapes and towns. It was around this time that M.C. Escher began to experiment with patterns by repeating natural features such as animals, birds and fish. Escher then created further illusion by merging figures and ground, merging two and three-dimensional patterns.
M.C. Escher died in 1972. Over the years his illusions have challenged mathematicians as well as those who appreciate his images for the graphic technique employed and his command of imagery. Looking for discounted fine art prints available in the US?

M C Escher art prints and posters
That pesky poser of pictorial paradoxes and teasing trickster of tanglesome tessellations, Maurits Cornelis Escher was born in Northern Holland. He went to school at Arnhem where his teacher got him so interested in printmaking that it inspired his first exciting adventures and explorations in the art of the lino cut (but made a right mess of his parents' kitchen floor). He went on to study architecture but a helpful artist-tutor quickly spotted the lad's talent for drawing and told him 'Stuff buildings, go graphic'. In 1923, with his mum's inestimably helpful career tip, 'Son, don't smoke too much!' still ringing in his ears, Maurice set off for Italy where he soon fell in love with the landscape, architecture, insects and arms (well, that's what he said) of the Swiss girl he eventually married. During the 1920s he had considerable artistic success, a house built near Rome and became so well known that his son's christening was attended by Mussolini (poor kid). In the 1930s he did a deal with a shipping company who gave him free travel in return for his drawings of their ships - but fortunately not the lifeboat location plans... although this was in his pre-1937 'realism' period. Being repelled by the morally repugnant and drawn to the visually-perplexing, he left Italy's fascist furore and went to live in Switzerland where he began working in the studio and drawing entirely on his infinite and ingenious imagination. He eventually returned to Holland where he spent the rest of his days, finally drawing the never-ending escalator of mortality then boarding it for all time.
