Department of Computer Science

University of British Columbia

Vancouver, Canada Can artificial intelligence ever rival our own? At UBC's Laboratory for Computational Intelligence, we're exploring this question, working on computer systems that can reason about the world, perceive their surroundings, communicate with their users and act with robotic manipulators or 'hands'. Our objectives are to identify the constraints and to define the computations that make intelligent reasoning, perception, and action possible. Some of our research areas include mobile robotics, probabilistic reasoning, computer vision, reality-based modeling, hybrid systems, adaptive interfaces, intelligent computer-aided instruction, decision-support systems, collaborative systems, smart tactile communication, and remote sensing. The laboratory facilities are shared by faculty members, three staff, as well as an active group of graduate students and post-docs. Read on for more about the LCI. PEOPLE

Home Research Activities Research Areas Artificial Intelligence Research Group Artificial Intelligence Research Group AI research at the University of Alberta is distinguished by its emphasis on collaboration with other areas of computing science as well as its connections with cognitive science, philosophy, and computational linguistics. On-going joint work and supervision of students is common with other department faculty members in the areas of software engineering, theory, data base research, and robotics. This commitment reflects the strong belief that the boundaries between the subdivisions within computing science are increasingly blurred as the discipline matures. Advances in AI lead to advances in other areas of computing science, and vice versa. With 17 core and associated faculty, approximately 25 graduate students, and 5 post-docs and research associates, the AI group at the University of Alberta is among the largest in North America. Through its active AI seminar series, distinguished international scholars routinely visit the department and contribute to the broad vision of AI research that is done here. Welcome to the Department of Computer Science and Computer Engineering at La Trobe University. We have two aims: to achieve and maintain a national and international reputation for excellence in research; and to produce adaptable, self-directed, resourceful, and multi-skilled graduates through the provision of a quality learning environment which will enable students to deal with future developments in a rapidly changing environment.
From 2005, the Department consists of two sections, one at Bundoora and one at Bendigo. A unified web site is in preparation, but until it has been finalised the pages at http://www.latrobe.edu.au/cs/ refer to Bundoora and http://www.latrobe.edu.au/it/ to Bendigo. We are part of the School of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences in the Faculty of Science, Technology and Engineering. Introduction
With a bit of oversimplification, AI is:
      • simulated intelligent behavior symbolic processing
      Main techniques include:
      • rule-based or tree-based knowledge representation. logic programming heuristics
AI has influenced a number computer scientific areas:
      • databases software engineering, include object-oriented design distributed computing graphics user interfaces simulation

      Search
Search is a classical AI topic. Many AI problems reduce to searching for solutions in the problem state space. The basic idea:
      • initial state apply an operator to transform state.
Example: symbolic integration To find this integral: , you can try different tricks, and not all will work. Example: 8-puzzle If a bunch of tiles are arranged like this: And this is the correct order: and the is a blank tile you can slide around, then you can use search to figure it out. Each state will have at most four resulting states, because you can slide

About Us Contact Us Great Travel Links ... Our Links Site Contents Welcome to ICSC Interdisciplinary Research Mission Statement:
To serve the scientific community. Our long term overall objectives of our group is the encouragement of efficient communication infrastructure between scientists, researchers, engineers and practitioners in all sciences. Sharing the work with people in other, perhaps unrelated, fields, new thinking about their own work is generated. Fresh, lateral thinking is our aim. We will meet these objectives by the arrangements of international conventions, conferences, mini-tracks, seminars and workshops in collaboration with universities and industries, supporting focused technology transfer activities to new potential application areas and strong interaction between research and industry. Participation in its activities is encouraged on a world-wide basis. Our International Academic Advisory Council (IAAC) is designed as a source of academic guidance and active support for future projects. The Council is presided by Peter Anderson , RIT New York, USA.
