Director: Peter Szolovits psz@mit.edu Mission: To provide better health care through applied artificial intelligence. Description: The Clinical Decision Making Group at the MIT Laboratory for Computer Science is a research group dedicated to exploring and furthering the application of technology and artificial intelligence to clinical situations. Because of the vital and crucial nature of medical practice, and the need for accurate and timely information to support clinical decisions, the group is also focused on the gathering, availability, security and use of medical information throughout the human "life cycle" and beyond.

ICAI'05 - The 2005 International Conference on Artificial Intelligence
Monte Carlo Resort, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA (June 27-30, 2005) I C A I
    The 2005 International Conference on Artificial Intelligence (ICAI'05) will be held in Las Vegas, Nevada, June 27-30, 2005. The ICAI'05 Conference will be held simultaneously (ie, same location and dates) with a number of other international Conferences and workshops (CISST'05, PDPTA'05, ICOMP'05, SERP'05, CIC'05, ...). The last set of conferences (ICAI'05 and affiliated events) had research contributions from 78 countries (the event held in Las Vegas had over 1,450 participants from all over the world.) It is hoped that PDPTA'05 will also have a strong international flavor.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the key technology in many of today's novel applications, ranging from banking systems that detect attempted credit card fraud, to telephone systems that understand speech, to software systems that notice when you're having problems and offer appropriate advice. These technologies would not exist today without the sustained federal support of fundamental AI research over the past three decades. Although there are some fairly pure applications of AI such as industrial robots, or the Intellipath TM
  • Autonomous vehicles: A DARPA-funded onboard computer system from Carnegie Mellon University drove a van all but 52 of the 2849 miles from Washington, DC to San Diego, averaging 63 miles per hour day and night, rain or shine;
  • Computer chess: Deep Blue , a chess computer built by IBM researchers, defeated world champion Gary Kasparov in a landmark performance;
  • Mathematical theorem proving: A computer system at Argonne National Laboratories proved a long-standing mathematical conjecture about algebra using a method that would be considered creative if done by humans;

The Sciences of the Artificial by Herbert Alexander Simon "People sometimes ask me what they should read to find out about artificial intelligence. Herbert Simon's book The Sciences of the Artificial is always on the list I give them. Every page issues a challenge to conventional thinking, and the layman who digests it well will certainly understand what the field of artificial intelligence hopes to accomplish. I recommend it in the same spirit that I recommend Freud to people who ask about psychoanalysis, or Piaget to those who ask about child psychology: If you want to learn about a subject, start by reading its founding fathers." The 12th International Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Education (AIED 2005) is the latest in a longstanding series of biennial international conferences highlighting top quality research in the development of advanced educational applications. The AIED field is committed to the belief that true progress in learning technology requires combining advanced technology with advanced understanding of learners, learning, and the context of learning. The conference thus provides opportunities for the cross-fertilization of information and ideas from researchers in the many fields that make up this interdisciplinary research area, including: artificial intelligence, other areas of computer science, cognitive science, education, learning sciences, educational technology, psychology, philosophy, sociology, anthropology, linguistics, and the many domain-specific areas for which AIED systems have been designed and built. Important announcements:
    • Conference program is now available (latest update July 16th). The program includes:
