The Hard Evidence
The existence of Arthur as an historical figure can be traced back to only three written texts/books; 'The History of the Britons' Written in Latin, but unfortunately written approximately three hundred years after the death of Arthur, in c.AD537, is supposed to have occurred: 'Then the warrior Arthur, with the soldiers and kings of Britain used to fight against the Saxons, and though there were many of more noble birth than he, he was twelve times leader of war and victor of the battles.' This book also refers to the 'Battle of Badon': 'The twelfth battle was on Badon Hill and in it 960 men fell in one day from a single charge of Arthur's, and no one laid them low 'cept for he alone, and he was victorious in all his campaigns.' (Extracts from - History of the Britons) 'De excido et conqeustu Britannae', The Ruin and Conquest of Britain
Written by 'Gildas' (See Gildas 29 January , (c.AD500-570), of the early Celtic Church. It is suggested that this book may possibly have been written during Arthur's own lifetime, but it does not mention Arthur at all, the reason for which is a subject of much debate. It does however mention the victorious 'Battle of Badon' referred to in The History of the Britons. There are many reasons given for Gildas omitting Arthur but it is one sentence alone that links the two books together: 'From then on victory went now to our countrymen, now to their enemies. This lasted right up to the siege of Badon Hill.'

Arthur and the British Psyche
Page: (1) reidcourchie Interested on people's opinions on this.
Does the mythological Arthur figure play an important part in the makeup of the national psyche (assuming for a moment that such a beast exists)? I should stress that this refers to the mythological Arthur and is not a question as to the existence of Arthur, or actual historical events. I am particularly interested to hear the response of members from outside of Britain.
Wether you believe Arthur does or does not play an important part in the British national psyche, what do you think can be learnt about Britain from the Arthurian myth? Again I would be interested in hearing comparisons with other cultures and their myth.
Can the mythological stories of a culture be said to have a positive or negative effect on the cultures the come from, or is that purely subjective and depending on the propaganda use that individuals or societies put them too? (For example the Nazis use of the Siegfried stories and indeed Arthurian myth.) grant Malory consistently refers to his source as "the French book."

The Historical King Arthur
by Lady Meliora Leuedai de Ardescote
(Published in The Gauntlet, the newsletter of Pentamer and The Pale, the newsletter of the Middle Kingdom)
Everyone knows the legend of Arthur, that he pulled a sword from a stone and became king of the Britons, led the knights of the round table, was betrayed by his wife and best knight, quested for the grail, and was taken to the isle of Avalon, to rise once more. This story is based on one or more historical figures, but is fictionalized and far from the truth. What do we know of historical Arthur, and his evolution into a legend?
Scholars believe that Arthur's legend may have originated in Britain during the period from the late fifth to early sixth centuries, possibly from a battle leader responsible for stopping Saxon raids during that time. The name Arthur was originally Artorius, so Arthur may have been a Romanized Briton. The first known written mention of "Arthur" is in an epic poem believed to be penned in 603 A.D., called Y Goddodin . The poet Aneurin compares a later British warrior battling the Angles by saying, "he glutted black ravens on the rampart of the fort, though he was no Arthur." If this passage wasn't added by later scribes, it proves Arthur's valor in battle was already well known. However, an earlier work

Who does not thrill to Sir Thomas Malory's account of the rise and fall of King Arthur's ancient Celtic realm? And who fails to be moved by Arthur Lord Tennyson's 'coming' and 'passing' of Arthur?" By Armond White KIDS AND ADULTS, the prevailing dichotomy of moviegoers, has unfortunately come to mean Ignorance and Intelligence. But this difference gets stupefying when movies treat adults like ignorant kids—which is the case with King Arthur , Jerry Bruckheimer's Armageddonizing of the Arthurian legend. Director Antoine Fuqua ( Training Day ) jacks up the classical story by imitating action-movie formula. This isn't just seasonal product. (Fuqua's not just one of the boys of summer; he's a hack of all genres.) It's proof that even a foolproof story can be ruined by Hollywood cynicism. There's danger if kid and adult audiences can no longer tell the difference. In 1974 Robert Bresson pared down the King Arthur tale in Lancelot of the Lake (newly released on New Yorker Films DVD), but not for purposes of simplification. Bresson's retelling of the trust broken and honor sustained between Arthur, his queen Guinevere and his boldest knight Lancelot was a kind of purification of the oft-told tale (one critic properly described it as "severe"). Although romanticism was downplayed, wonder remained. Bresson explored each character's spiritual urging—and each one's bafflement. He caught that quintessential element of Arthurian myth (dovetailing with the German mythology and the story of Parsifal). It is both history and an imagining of the foundations of Western Christianity.

Published by Paper Tiger at £12.99. 128pp A4. ISBN: 1-85028-340-0 (Reviewed by John West) David Mattingly worked as an artist for the Walt Disney studio involved in painting on glass to create a blend of painting and realism that merges perfectly on screen. This skill is to be seen especially in his book-cover illustrations for books in the Star Wars and Star Trek series, which are featured in Alternate Views, Alternate Universes This degree of attention to detail comes through in this book. The subjects range from illustrations for Edward Rice Burroughs' books to science fiction, fantasy and fairy tale. Whatever the subject, from stunning pictures of futuristic cityscapes to wild explosions it is captured in a vast spectrum of colours and is painted with loving care and detail. There is also humour in his renderings of magical characters, who often look more like people you see on the streets than conventional illustrations. One memorable picture, entitled The Wizard of Sunset Strip , of a street-wise youth with a magical charge flashing between his hands encapsulates this. This book stimulates the imagination and stuns the senses of anyone who appreciates the skill that is required to achieve these results.

If you're looking for history, don't go to the movies. No, I'm not talking about "Fahrenheit 9/11." I'm talking about hotshot Hollywood producer Jerry Bruckheimer's latest action extravaganza, "King Arthur." Directed by Antoine Fuqua from a screenplay by David Franzoni, "King Arthur" stars Clive Owen as Arthur, Keira Knightley as Guinevere and Ioan Gruffudd as Lancelot. The characters may be familiar, but they have little in common with the heroes of legend.
Keira Knightley is a blue-painted Guinevere in "King Arthur."
The story of Arthur as we know it begins in 1136, when Geoffrey of Monmouth published his largely fanciful "History of the Kings of Britain." It is here that Arthur is first depicted as king of all Britain and his legend becomes intertwined with that of the magician Merlin. Guinevere and Arthur's father, Uther Pendragon, also appear, as does Arthur's treacherous nephew, Mordred. But many of the things we associate with Arthur, such as the round table, Camelot and the quest for the Holy Grail, don't appear until decades later. The romantic, courtly elements of Arthurian mythology came mostly from continental Europe, rather than from the British Isles. In 1165, the French writer
