Offered Biennially
Conducted in English.
All readings in English translation.

A study centering on the most popular and enduring of all medieval legendary figures. We will examine the early texts from which the Arthurian mythology took root and contributed to the eventual spread into Germany of the tales of King Arthur and the knights of the Round Table. We will then focus on a close reading of four or five of the most significant Arthurian romances within the German tradition. In addition, we will systematically trace the relationship between this highly idealized world of literary knighthood and real-life contemporary historical and social events of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries.

Heather Dale, The Trial of Lancelot (Amphisbaena Music, 2000) Heather Dale began her musical career as a member of the Society for Creative Anachronism, performing 16th and 17th century dance music, and writing her own compositions: ballads recording the history of her branch of the SCA (the Kingdom of Ealdormere) and other medieval subjects. Among these early compositions were several, of course, on the Matter of Britain, the cycle of Arthurian legend. These early amateur works were limited in their instrumentation, and occasionally revealed a weakness in the musical arrangement, but the compositions themselves were professional in quality, and Heather's singing was pure enough to deserve attention outside of the apparently narrow focus of the albums. Her first professional CD release, The Trial of Lancelot , shows how much she has matured as an artist. Her voice and her compositions are still the central appeal, but the arrangements are now rich, and the instruments are no longer chosen by necessity and ease of access. This astonishing work will appeal to folk and Celtic fans, and anyone interested in Arthurian mythology. The songs focus entirely on King Arthur and his court, mainly on the relationships between the figures. Unlike

As a result, everyone in the film looks as though he or she is prepared to slit the throat of anyone who looks at them cross-eyed. Perhaps his dedication to realism, may have weighed heavily on both cast and crew, but the film accurately portrays the conditions in 7th Century Celtic lands.

Joseph Campbell's Mythic Journey
by Jonathan Young
New Perspectives Magazine July 1994 Mythologist Joseph Campbell was a masterful storyteller. He could weave tales from every corner of the world into spell-binding narratives. His lifelong quest from childhood days as a devout Catholic altar boy to fame as the world's most noted scholar in comparative mythology makes for a fine heroic story. The adventure picks up when young Joe Campbell sees the Indians in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show in 1912. The future scholar soon became convinced that he had Indian blood. One of the striking details of the early years was Campbell's youthful studiousness. He read his way through the children's section of the public library and was admitted to the adult stacks at the age of eleven. He devoted himself to every available fact about Native American life, including the reports of the Bureau of American Ethnology. By high school, he was already writing articles on Native American mythology, presenting many of the themes he would still be working in his eighties. Campbell's life was a passionate intellectual journey. College years at Columbia University were spent discovering literature while becoming a track star and playing in a jazz band on weekends. Graduate study in the Holy Grail legends of Arthurian mythology took him to Paris and Munich where he discovered the ideas of Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung as well as James Joyce, Thomas Mann and modern art. This is when he saw the parallels between mythic themes in literature and psychological lessons such as those revealed in dreams.

Modern Myths, Part Four: Legends Live
by Shannon Appelcline August 1, 2002 - Back in April, when I started this entire discussion of mythology in online games, I talked a bit about the troubles that mythology was having in surviving into the modern day. As you may recall from Modern Myths, Part Two: An Overview from Citizen Kane to Spider-Man , I mentioned three main reasons that new myths weren't being created today:
    • Knowledge. With an increased understanding of our universe, we have less need to make up stories to explain it.
    • With intellectual property becoming increasingly bound and shackled, there is less opportunity for good stories to be built upon by others and thus made immortal.
    • Communication. With the world becoming increasingly unified there's less opportunity for unique and individual stories to survive and prosper.
Since I originally wrote about Modern Myths I've had a little more time to consider how myths are surviving into the modern age. Much of it, quite surprisingly, came out of reading a book called The Comic-Book Book , edited by Don Thompson and Dick Lupoff. That's what I want to talk about this week.

At Camelot Arthur established a brilliant court and seated the greatest and most chivalrous warriors in Europe, the Knights of the Round Table. Camelot was the starting point of the Quest for the Holy Grail, and by the 1200's, it came to symbolize the center of the Arthurian world. The oldest known stories of Arthur don't refer to Camelot by name. It is first mentioned explicitly in the romance Lancelot written by Chretien de Troyes in the twelfth century. Different writers throughout the ages have placed Camelot in different locations. Sir Thomas Malory, in Le Morte D'arthur (15th century), placed the castle in Winchester.
