Adams, Abigail

Abigail Adams will always be remembered as a patriot, First Lady, wife of one President, and mother of another.

A - D Adams, John US President - 1797-1801 Learned and thoughtful, John Adams was more remarkable as a political philosopher than as a politician. "People and nations are forged in the fires of adversity," he said, doubtless thinking of his own as well as the American experience. Jul 30, 2004, 18:57 A - D Adams, John Quincy US President - 1825-29 The first President who was the son of a President, John Quincy Adams in many respects paralleled the career as well as the temperament and viewpoints of his illustrious father. Born in Braintree, Massachusetts, in 1767, he watched the Battle of Bunker Hill from the top of Penn's Hill above the family farm. As secretary to his father in Europe, he became an accomplished linguist and assiduous diarist. Jul 30, 2004, 19:04

Trained as a lawyer, Arthur had been a leader in Republican party politics (he helped to secure the nomination of U.S. Grant in 1868). Arthur had a respectable administration whose primary achievement was civil service reform, notable because of his previous reputation for cronyism. He lost a bid for reelection in 1884 to Democrat Grover Cleveland

Chester A. Arthur
21st President
His father was an Irish immigrant from Dreen and his mother's family was of Ulster ancestry. Chester was born in North Fairfield, Vermont on October 5, 1830. He was the first President born in Vermont. He was one of two Presidents born in Vermont. Arthur was an Epicopalian. He had both a mustache and long sideburns. Chester Arthur served in the Civil War. He was Vice President to James Garfield. He never ran for President. (One of four Presidents not to run for office.) Chester Arthur took office after the assassination of James Garfield. He was one of four Presidents to take office after an assassination. He was a Republican. This president spent his last years in office knowing he could very well die of Bright's disease before his term ended. He knew that the more active he was the greater his chance of succumbing to the disease and yet he even made a halfhearted attempt to gain his party's nomination for another term. He survived his nearly 4 years in office and did not die until a year and a half later, in 1886.

Chester Alan Arthur, 20th Vice President (1881) Such an honor and opportunity comes to very few of the millions of Americans, and to that man but once. No man can refuse it, and I will not. Following the Civil War and Reconstruction, "boss rule" and "machine politics" flourished in the United States, and nowhere more intensely than in New York, the most populated state in the Union. The Tweed Ring ran the Democratic party's Tammany Hall apparatus in New York, and an equally powerful machine operated within the state's Republican party. Throughout the 1870s, that party's "stalwart" faction, led by Senator Roscoe Conkling A spellbinding orator with a commanding presence, Senator Roscoe Conkling was the uncrowned leader of the Senate in an era before majority and minority leaders were formally designated. One woman newspaper correspondent described him as the most alluring politician of his time and "the Apollo of the Senate." New York's other senator, Thomas C. Platt, similarly considered Conkling one of the handsomest men he had ever met. He was over six feet tall, of slender build, and stood straight as an arrow. . . . A curl, described as Hyperion, rolled over his forehead. An imperial [air] added much to the beauty of his Apollo-like appearance. His noble figure, flashing eye and majestic voice made one forget that he was somewhat foppish in his dress.

Chester Alan Arthur (1829-1886) became president after James A. Garfield died from an assassin's bullet. Arthur was the fourth vice president to succeed to the presidency upon the death of a chief executive.
Arthur had risen rapidly in the Republican Party organization of New York City. In 1871, he became collector of the New York Custom House, then the largest single federal office in the United States. Widespread dishonesty in government occurred during this period, and Arthur used his office to reward Republicans and strengthen the party. These actions contributed to graft and waste in the custom house and led to his removal in 1878.
    Arthur's presidency
As president, however, Arthur surprised the nation by the honesty and efficiency shown by his Administration. Protests by reformers about the dishonesty of previous administrations in the appointment of government officials caused Congress to pass the Civil Service Act. Arthur signed the law and administered it faithfully.

    • President Arthur signed the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. It broke the Treaty of 1880 with China which allowed Chinese immigrants to enter the U.S. While the Chinese Exclusion Act did halt immigration for 10 years and kept already immigrated Chinese from becoming citizens, Arthur had already vetoed a bill which would have banned any Chinese immigration for 20 years. In 1883 Buffalo Bill, who had become famous hunting buffalo to feed the crews who were laying track for the Transcontinental Railroad by the Union Pacific, organized the first of his wild west shows. These shows featured sharpshooter Annie Oakley and Sioux chief Sitting Bull. In 1883 President Arthur signed the Pendleton Act. This act reformed civil service, which was believed to be filled with politically connected individuals who didn’t really do any work. The Pendelton Act created exams for government jobs. It also created a Civil Service Commission to oversee the new competitive merit system. Chester Alan Arthur - portrait and biographical information at the White House web site.

    Chester A. Arthur, 1829-1886
America's 21st president, Chester A. Arthur ascended the presidency under a cloud after the death of James A. Garfield, who was assassinated before completing 6 months as president. A former member of an infamous New York political machine, it was said that no man took the president's office "so widely distrusted, and no man ever retired more generally respected" than Chester A, Arthur. Remembered for establishing the Civil Service Commission, Arthur died November 18th, 1886 at the age of 57. Born on October 5th, 1829 in Fairfield, Vermont, Chester A. Arthur was the son of an Irish-born Baptist minister, William Arthur, and his wife Malvinia Stone. Arthur graduated from Union College at Schenectady, NY in 1848 an honor student and member of Phi Beta Kappa and proceeded to work his way through law school as a teacher. Passing the New York bar in 1854, Arthur took up practice in New York City, where his strong abolitionist sympathies led him to waging famed cases on the behalf of African Americans, including the Lizzie Johnson case which led to a New York State anti-discrimination law.
