Rheumatoid Arthritis
Medical Author: William C. Shiel Jr., MD, FACP, FACR What is rheumatoid arthritis?
Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that causes chronic inflammation of the joints. Rheumatoid arthritis can also cause inflammation of the tissue around the joints, as well as other organs in the body. Autoimmune diseases are illnesses which occur when the body tissues are mistakenly attacked by its own immune system. The immune system is a complex organization of cells and antibodies designed normally to "seek and destroy" invaders of the body, particularly infections. Patients with these diseases have antibodies in their blood which target their own body tissues, where they can be associated with inflammation. Because it can affect multiple other organs of the body, rheumatoid arthritis is referred to as a systemic illness and is sometimes called rheumatoid disease. While rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic illness, meaning it can last for years, patients may experience long periods without symptoms. Typically, however, rheumatoid arthritis is a progressive illness that has the potential to cause joint destruction and functional disability.

Panel looks at safety of arthritis drugs
By Rhonda Rowland CNN Medical Unit The safety of two drugs used to treat arthritis will be discussed by the Food and Drug Administration's Arthritis Advisory Committee Friday. It's been three years since the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis was revolutionized with the introduction of Enbrel, a biologic drug that inhibits tumor necrosis factor (TNF), which plays a key role in promoting the disease process. A year later, a second TNF inhibitor called Remicade was introduced. "These have been a major advance in rheumatology," said Dr. John Klippel, medical director of the Arthritis Foundation, "probably the single major advance in at least 50 years. The only thing comparable was the introduction of corticosteroids in the 1950's." The committee will discuss ongoing safety concerns with TNF inhibitors to ensure product labels reflect what's been seen with large numbers of patients taking the drugs over a long period of time.

It affects millions of adults and half of all people age 65 and older. Arthritis causes pain and loss of movement. It can affect joints in any part of the body. It often is a chronic disease, which means that it can affect you over a long period of time. The more serious forms can cause swelling, warmth, redness, and pain. There are more than 100 different kinds of arthritis and many different symptoms and treatments. Scientists do not know what causes most forms of arthritis. They understand some better than others. Common Forms of Arthritis The three most common kinds of arthritis in older people are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout. Osteoarthritis ( OA ) is the most common type of arthritis in older people. It mostly affects cartilage—the tissue that cushions the ends of bones within the joint. OA often affects the hands and the large weight-bearing joints of the body, such as knees and hips. OA occurs when cartilage begins to fray, wear, and decay. In some cases, all of the cartilage may wear away between the bones of the joint, leaving bones that rub against each other. Symptoms can range from stiffness and mild pain that comes and goes, to severe joint pain. OA can cause:

If you do not know the meaning of a word in this article, for a definition click on http://www.m-w.com (Mirriam-Webster). For unknown words also see the On-Line Medical Dictionary See this site (for a summary of potassium and copper nutrition) INTRODUCTION I have previously proposed that rheumatoid arthritis is accentuated by losses of potassium in our food supply and is largely a chronic potassium deficiency [Weber 1974] which causes alterations inside the cell of free amino acids [Iacobellis], interference by sodium with enzymes inside the cell as a result of the increased sodium there [Rubini], alterations of the potassium-sodium regulating hormone patterns which then affect other physiological processes, or some combination of these. I have come to believe that a disturbance of copper metabolism is the most serious symptom of these other processes. The aspect of copper physiology which is most potentially dangerous is its role in activating lysyl oxidase, the enzyme which cross links collagen and elastin connecting tissue [Sandberg, et al]. Copper's effect on elastin is especially important because elastin gains its strength primarily from cross linking [Carnes1971(discusses copper aminases)] and because elastin is the main material of several important organs, which include blood vessels, spinal discs, lungs, and skin [Carnes, 1977]. 4 to 6 of 100 Americans autopsied died of a ruptured aneurysm and 40% of them had unruptured aneurysms [from a dead URL]. This relationship may be a large part of the reduction in aneurysms which increased potassium produces.

Internet Snake Oil Snagged By FTC
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is making an effort to combat fraudulent health websites on the Internet and is cautioning consumers to look to the Internet for health information with a discerning eye. The FTC has been sweeping the Internet in a crackdown on health websites which make fraudulent and unsubstantiated claims . The FTC campaign, known as Operation Cure. All, combines law enforcement and consumer education in an attempt to stop the bogus claims and quackery. More than 22 million adults in the United States used the Internet to search for health and medical information as of December 1998. Twenty-nine percent of all Americans use the Internet for medical information, with about 70 percent of this group doing so prior to visiting the doctor. Most of these users search for information about diseases. About 25 percent of these users join an online support group.

FDA panel recommends arthritis drug approval
A new arthritis drug may be approved by the FDA
September 17, 1998
Web posted at: 12:08 a.m. EDT (0408 GMT) WASHINGTON (CNN) An advisory panel to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommended Wednesday that Enbrel, a promising new drug to fight rheumatoid arthritis, be approved for use. If the FDA goes along with the recommendation of the advisory panel, which it usually does, Enbrel could offer a new era of relief for people suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, which affects 2.1 million Americans, mostly women. It is the No. 1 cause of disability in the United States. Dr. Doyt Conn of the Arthritis Foundation says that while Enbrel is "certainly not a cure, it's a disease modifier, and it's going to be very helpful." Enbrel, which could hit pharmacy shelves within a year, is the first in a new class of drugs that inhibit the chronic inflammation of joints that ultimately leads to permanent damage. Both researchers and patients who have tested the drug say it offers relief without the side effects that accompany other arthritis drug therapies.

Is that what you are finding? Is your doctor talking about pain management as arthritis treatment, and nothing else? Then it is time you looked further! It is YOUR responsibility to make sure you are dealing with a doctor who looks for causes , not merely relieves the pain symptoms. There are many good doctors out there, you just have to keep looking till you find one. And when you do, pass the word around! "Rheumatoid Arthritis" is not one single disease, but a catch-all diagnosis for many different causes, over 190 known different diseases, and probably more. Many are curable! But will Your doctor try to find out which of those 190 diseases you really have? Or take the easy and profitable way out by simply prescribing pain killers and anti-inflammatory drugs for the rest of your life? I hope you check every one of these options. You never know which one will lead You to YOUR cure. When the doctors say it can't be cured, it means the multi-billion dollar pharmo-medical industry does not see enough profit in investing in a Permanent Cure But you do! When they used heavy legal mu$cle to force the former tenant of this web nook out over a dubious name similarity, a tenant who spoke of CURES, not profitable pain relief; we used our constitutional right to Freedom of Speech and put up these pointers to good information to help You.

There is no known eczema cure, but herbs and other substances, like emu oil, have been found to be very effective for individuals who have not achieved the desired results from traditional medicine. The dry, itching skin that accompanies eczema may be helped with products based on emu oil and herbs. Alternative therapies using herbs may be effective for some people suffering from eczema. These guidelines offer some information about eczema, its causes, and some suggestions about alternative, or complementary therapies. Many patients have discovered that Western Medicine does not always have success with eczema. Conventional treatment and complementary treatments should not be consider an 'either/or' condition. The best therapy is the one that ones for an individual. See some dramatic pictures of a woman with eczema before using emu oil and after 1 and 3 weeks of applying emu oil to her neck and face.
