What is a COX II inhibitor?
Why were 2 of them taken off the market?
Introduced in 1998, COX II inhibitors are a relatively new family of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS). Though not necessarily more effective at reducing inflammation and pain than older, traditional nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin and naproxen, they represented an advance over the older drugs because they were believed to cause less stomach irritation.
However, COX-2 inhibitors are still classified as NSAIDS. Some doctors recommended that you not take them on an empty stomach.
They are called COX-2 inhibitors because they block an enzyme called
"Cyclooxygenase". "Cyclooxygenase" is believed to trigger pain and inflammation in the body. If you block the COX-2, you block the inflammation.

FDA panel recommends new arthritis drug
By Rhonda Rowland CNN Medical Unit (CNN) Patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis could soon have a new treatment option. A Food and Drug Administration advisory panel, in a 6-2 vote, recommended approval of anakinra, to be marketed as Kineret, for patients who have failed standard therapies for rheumatoid arthritis. "We've seen a good response in 40 percent of patients studied," said Dr. Stanley Cohen, medical director of Radiant Research in Dallas, Texas. "Patients reported they have less pain and feel better overall. They significantly improved in measures of physical disability." The FDA, which usually follows the recommendations of the advisory panel, should make a final decision within six months. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease causing pain and joint swelling. It is the most severe and disabling type of arthritis.

... Disease Index Osteoporosis Osteoporosis Statistics
  • 28 million people are affected in the United States. Women are affected four times as often as men. One out of two women and one in eight men over age 50 will have an osteoporosis-related fracture in their lifetime.
What is Osteoporosis? Osteoporosis is a disease of the skeletal system. The bones lose density, become brittle and prone to fracture. It is the major cause of bone fractures in older people, especially postmenopausal women. What causes it? A certain amount of bone density is lost as a part of aging. During the mid-30s, everyone begins to lose very small amounts of bone. Bone loss accelerates at menopause, with some women losing up to 30% of bone mass in the first five years. There are certain risk factors that increase a person's chance of having osteoporosis. Some are unavoidable such as being a post-menopausal female, being thin or "small boned" and aging. However many are avoidable. Smoking, alcohol use, long term use of corticosteroids, lack of exercise and low intake of dietary calcium all can contribute to the development of osteoporosis.
