Diet Many people with arthritis ask whether any special diet will help them or whether there are any certain foods they should avoid. Friends, articles in magazines and advertising promotions often suggest a range of dietary cures that promise many benefits for us. Research has not found any convincing evidence that arthritis can be cured or relieved by avoiding or eating particular foods, except for the treatment of gout. All of these suggestions should be treated with caution and the guidelines outlined in the section on alternatives should be considered before embarking on any suggested programme. Gout is the only form of arthritis in which a change of diet is definitely beneficial. The types of foods that should be eliminated or reduced are discussed in the section on gout. Special diets
Elimination diets are one of the most commonly suggested diets, assuming that the body is reacting to a certain food causing a flare up of Arthritis. For people with rheumatoid arthritis, there may be some intolerance to foods in the nightshade group - tomatoes, potatoes, capsicums etc. Most people with inflammatory arthritis will have good and bad patches. If the cycle of the disease coincides with the removal of a particular food and improvement begins, it may or may not be the food eliminated which has caused the change. If you really believe that a special product or diet will help your arthritis, it may well do so for a while, but if the improvement is only due to this belief, then it will soon tend to disappear.

By Cheryl Koch, CNSD Introduction It is estimated that collective spending by arthritis patients experimenting with unproven treatments, including diets, exceeds well over one million dollars annually. In 1989, Arthritis Care ref 1 noted that greater than 50% of the Arthritis Care members who were surveyed, had invested in "unorthodox medicines, substances, or treatments (including diets), during the prior six months". Since the 1930's researchers have been exploring the link between diet and arthritis. We continue to hear claims that special diets, foods and supplements may help to cure or alleviate symptoms of arthritis, but most claims are unproven. Many experts speculate that claims of nutritional remedies and cures with food or dietary supplements are related to the "placebo affect". The placebo effect is the patient’s perception of improved symptoms and well being, resulting from new therapy, regardless of evidence for actual physical improvement. Because there is little scientific evidence confirming the benefits of modified diets for patients with arthritis, health care providers are apprehensive to recommend these types of dietary manipulations to their patients. Unfortunately, people with limited or no medical backgrounds have filled this void by advising patients about the benefits of diets and arthritis. The advice given is often questionable, expensive and can be dangerous.

Diseases of the muscles and bones are among the most common of all human afflictions, affecting all ages, but becoming more prevalent with years. Government surveys indicate in the United States approximately 33% of adults currently suffer from troublesome arthritis with symptoms of swelling, limitation of motion, or pain. Approximately half of all people over 65 years report having arthritis. The regions of the body most affected are the neck, lower back, hip and shoulder. traumatic arthritis . The McDougall Program:
(Diet and Lifestyle Implications):

Cause: Arthritis means "inflammation of a joint". There are many known and unknown causes for the more severe forms of arthritis. An example of a form of arthritis with a known cause is gout, due to the consumption of foods (rich in purines) by susceptible persons. Osteoarthritis is supposed to be "a normal part of aging". Many aggressive and crippling forms, including rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis, and systemic lupus, are grouped together as "inflammatory arthritis". Their cause is generally held to be unknown. But, consider these facts:
Inflammatory arthritis is much more common among people of countries where rich foods are eaten. Such places are the United States, Canada, Western Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. In parts of the world (including most of Asia and Africa) where people eat little meat and few dairy products, where grains, vegetables and fruits make up most of their diet, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis, and lupus arthritis are very rare. In the few individuals in whom an arthritis does occur, the disease is mild and not crippling.

Research into diet and arthritis There are some scientific reasons to think that diet affects arthritis. How diet affects the response of the immune system is a central question in several research studies . These studies are looking at the role of diet in worsening or lessening symptoms in certain types of arthritis. Some very early studies in animals or in small numbers of people with certain types of arthritis suggest, but do not prove, that changes in diet may help. The results of these studies are experimental. They need to be studied further in large numbers of people. So, there is not enough scientific evidence to recommend to people with arthritis any of the dietary changes described below, except for weight control. Weight and osteoarthritis Being very overweight or obese increases your risk for developing osteoarthritis in the knees. People who are very overweight tend to develop osteoarthritis in the knees at an earlier age than people with ideal weights for their heights. Weight is only one of several factors that increase your chances for osteoarthritis in the knees.

About diet and arthritis
Seven guidelines for a healthy diet A good diet is important for everyone, but it is especially helpful for people with arthritis. Experts in diet recommend seven basic guidelines for a balanced, healthy diet.
  • Eat a variety of foods Maintain ideal weight Avoid too much fat and cholesterol Avoid too much sugar Eat foods with enough starch and fiber Avoid too much sodium Drink alcohol in moderation
  • You can use these guidelines in planning meals every day. A doctor, nutritionist, or other health care professional can help you tailor these guidelines for yourself, for instance, by determining your ideal weight, or teaching you how you can eat more fiber. Variety A good diet includes some choices from each of five different groups of foods:
    • Breads and cereals Fruits Vegetables Poultry, fish, lean meats, or dried beans Low-fat milk, cheese, yogurt

ARTHRITIS: THERE'S MORE YOU CAN DO THAN JUST LEARN TO LIVE WITH IT By the time you are 88 years old, you have consumed 300 tons of food, air and water.
    (R. Buckminster Fuller) ARTHRITIS AND DIET It is party-line medical doctrine that there is little or no connection between arthritis and nutrition. That belief belongs on the agenda of the next World-Is-Flat Society meeting. We truly are what we eat. We started from a union of two tiny half-cells. All that we are today, our trillions and trillions of cells, results from the molecules we've accumulated from breathing, drinking, and eating our food. How can arthritis, or any other disease for that matter, be unrelated to diet?
Naturopaths hold that the etiology of arthritis parallels a history of bad diet. You will
rarely see an arthritic patient that is not a cooked-food-and-meat-eater. Proof exists, and plenty of it. Francis M. Pottenger, M.D. did nutritional experiments on hundreds of cats over a period of two decades. He found that cats fed our typical cooked diet did in fact develop many degenerative diseases, including arthritis. What is especially interesting is that Dr. Pottenger found you could reverse the condition by feeding the animals only fresh, raw foods. (References are available from the Price-Pottenger Nutrition Foundation, La Mesa, CA 92041)
ARTHRITIS AND CALCIUM The Arthritis Foundation has stated that the average adult eats only about 550 milligrams or so of calcium daily. The US Recommend Daily Allowance is between 800 and 1200 mg/day, and that itself may be to low. Everyone knows that arthritis, whether rheumatoid or osteoarthritis, is related to bones and joints... and so is what they are largely made out of: calcium. Nationwide calcium deficiency, and NO arthritis connection with diet? How curious.

Is that what you are finding? Is your doctor talking about pain management as arthritis treatment, and nothing else? Then it is time you looked further! It is YOUR responsibility to make sure you are dealing with a doctor who looks for causes , not merely relieves the pain symptoms. There are many good doctors out there, you just have to keep looking till you find one. And when you do, pass the word around! "Rheumatoid Arthritis" is not one single disease, but a catch-all diagnosis for many different causes, over 190 known different diseases, and probably more. Many are curable! But will Your doctor try to find out which of those 190 diseases you really have? Or take the easy and profitable way out by simply prescribing pain killers and anti-inflammatory drugs for the rest of your life? I hope you check every one of these options. You never know which one will lead You to YOUR cure. When the doctors say it can't be cured, it means the multi-billion dollar pharmo-medical industry does not see enough profit in investing in a Permanent Cure But you do! Importance of a Balanced Diet
Because there are more than 100 types of arthritis and related diseases, no single diet will help everyone. However, doctors strongly recommend that people with arthritis or related conditions follow a diet based on variety, balance and moderation. A balanced diet can help you feel better and stay healthy; prevent chronic diseases, such as cancer and cardiovascular disease; and be a positive step toward managing your arthritis.
    Diet and Medication
Certain kinds of arthritis and some of the medications doctors prescribe also can affect how well your body uses what you eat. For example, glucocorticoids used to treat rheumatoid arthritis can cause your body to lose potassium and retain sodium. Some antacids, which may be taken to reduce stomach irritation, also contain high levels of sodium, calcium and magnesium. It is important to know this if you have kidney problems, which can make it harder for your body to regulate these important minerals. Talk to your physician about how the medications you take affect your nutritional status and whether a vitamin supplement may be useful for you.

Medical literature contains many documented cases of how diet modification/following an arthritis diet can improve inflammatory arthritis. One of the ways that people who suffer from arthritis can improve their health is by changing their diet. Studies have shown that a high cholesterol and high fat diet may contribute to the problem. Hence a general diet plan was designed to prevent arthritis from occurring in the first place and to relive the pain for those already afflicted. It’s not a strict diet, but more like a list of foods to avoid and foods that may be beneficial. The arthritis diet includes certain foods that you can eat and are beneficial to you.

Researchers compared the outcome in 26 people with well controlled but active rheumatoid arthritis who were placed on a “Mediterranean diet” for three months with a similar control group of 25 patients who remained on a traditional Western diet. The Mediterranean diet group ate lots of fruit, vegetables and legumes, more fish and less meat. A moderate wine intake was coupled with the use of olive oil in meals. Coping with Arthritis in Its Many Forms
by Carolyn J. Strange It may begin as a slight morning stiffness. For the lucky person with arthritis, that's as far as it goes. But for millions of others, arthritis can become a disabling, even crippling, disease. Roman Emperor Diocletian exempted citizens with severe arthritis from paying taxes, no doubt realizing that the disease itself can be taxing enough. One in seven Americansnearly 40 millionhave some form of arthritis. That number will climb as the baby boomers age. By 2020, about 60 million Americans will have arthritis, according to The National Arthritis Data Workgroup of the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases. The disease is physical, but also exacts a mental, emotional and economic toll. "Chronic illness impacts a person's entire lifestylework, family and recreation," says Gail Wright, Ph.D., a rehabilitation psychologist at the University of Missouri, Columbia. To improve quality of life, doctors and health educators increasingly advise combining drug treatment with education, social support, and moderate forms of exercise.

Labeled the “nation’s primary crippler”, Arthritis is defined as an inflammation of the joints. Its symptoms may include joint pain, stiffness, fatigue, swelling, redness, and enlarged bones in the fingers.
    Symptoms of Osteoarthritis
The most common type of arthritis is Osteoarthritis , a degenerative arthritis usually associated with poor nutrition and aging. Its primary symptoms include knee, back and hip pain, which can lead to surgical replacements. The hands, wrists and shoulders are also commonly affected. Most people over 60 in this country have some symptoms of osteoarthritis. This type of arthritis occurs as a result of inflammation and weakening of the joint capsule and cartilage lining the joints.

    Think yourself beautiful.
In the last couple of newsletters we have looked at practical ways to assist with grooming and looking our best. This month we are taking a more philosophical view on beauty since many readers have sent us requests to also write about the way we think about beauty. I came across an interesting quote the other day from Nancy Lane which states "Looking forever young is not an art - it is a practiced science - a studied regime". We also received a delightful e-mail from one of our readers which reads "I am tired of all this nonsense about beauty being only skin-deep. That is deep enough - what do you want - an adorable pancreas?" But with due reference to the statements above, there is one very important factor not to lose track of, and that is your mental attitude to the way you look.

Rheumatoid arthritis is the second most common joint problem in the UK - information from My Pharmacy UK
Rheumatoid arthritis is the second most common joint problem in the UK, affecting 1 in 50 people, and is more common in women than men. It tends to effect people in their 30s and 40s, but it can start at any age. It is totally different from the more common osteoarthritis , though both conditions can occur at the same time.
Rheumatoid arthritis is caused by inflammation of the joint. This reaction is triggered by the body attacking the lining of the joint. It is not known exactly why the body attacks its own tissues in this way, but it may share its cause with other diseases where the body attacks its own tissues such as low thyroid levels and type 1 diabetes. These are called auto-immune diseases. The first time rheumatoid arthritis strikes can be linked to a triggering event such as a blood transfusion, pregnancy or another illness. After that it can flare up after a mild illness, stress or injury.
