Forty million Americans have some form of arthritis today and the number is growing fast. As our population ages, the number of Americans affected will increase to 60 million by the year 2020. That is one in every five people. Can a nutritional approach help those who suffer chronically from the pain, swelling and joint stiffness of arthritis? There is some evidence that it can. Fatty Acids Omega-3 fatty acids, primarily found in oily fish, may reduce the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. They appear to suppress the immune system response that causes joint inflammation. In studies involving large doses of fish oil supplements (2.4 to 5 grams a day), there was some evidence of reduced stiffness and pain; the results were relatively meager but promising. Fish that are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids include:
  • salmon mackerel herring sardines tuna anchovies
Check with your doctor before taking large doses of fish oil, since it can also affect blood clotting, and it may interact with medications you are taking.

Some of the foods to avoid include anything from a fast food restaurant, soda, starchy foods such as potatoes, red meat intake should be minimal, as should anything high in saturated fat, and greasy foods and fried foods are out of the question as well. Some foods that may relieve the pain include fruits high in vitamin C like oranges, apples, and strawberries. Oily fish are also helpful as they are high in vitamin E, and grains such as wheat and brown rice are beneficial as well.
Many scientists believe that the standard, high-in-fat western diet contributes to the prevalence of arthritis. So the arthritis diet attempts to avoid the negative aspects of this diet and thus may even help those who aren't afflicted become healthier. It also emphasizes nutritious types of food which are essential in weight loss program.

Until recently it’s been unclear whether changing your diet may influence the symptoms of a chronic illness like arthritis. Nevertheless, new research continues to pour in touting the healing benefits of certain foods. Perhaps these foods aren’t the miracle cure many hoped for, but through scientific studies we do know that certain nutrients can boost immune function and decrease inflammation in those with arthritis. Be sure to include the following suggestions in your pain-free diet to further reduce inflammation and pain.
Sip Tea
You can now add tea to your list of healing foods. In fact, some experts claim that we should add tea to the list of disease-fighting fruits and vegetables that we should eat daily. Some intriguing information was presented at the Society of Critical Care Medicine in January 2002 on how green tea may help decrease inflammation.

While there are over 100 different types of arthritis, they all have one thing in common. One or more of the food items listed will be an “allergy food” for the arthritis sufferer. The most common culprits are:
  • sugar
  • caffeine
  • citrus
  • salt
  • red meat
  • dairy products
  • additives
  • soft drinks
  • flour
  • nightshades (examples below)

//This is the Top Banner OAS_AD('Top'); Arthritis Diet Remedies: Fact or Folklore? Arthritis sufferers have been trying for centuries to rid themselves of their debilitating pain. They have covered themselves in cow manure twice a day, stood naked under a full moon, kept two sesame seeds in their navel overnight while sleeping, worn radioactive devices, endured scores of bee stings, tolerated venoms of snakes, and recently have even rubbed on the mechanical lubricant WD-40. If these measures helped, it was probably because the sufferers wanted them to so desperately. Some scientists today credit such a "placebo effect" with the pain relief gained from special arthritis diets. Others believe dietary manipulation can truly ease pain; but even they say we need more long-term scientific studies. Nearly one in six, or 43 million Americans, suffers from the more than 100 types of arthritis, making it one of the most common diseases in the United States. Osteoarthritis, the most common form of the disease, afflicts more than 21 million Americans. Rheumatoid arthritis plagues about 2 million more. The Arthritis Foundation has warned that, as the average age of the U.S. population rises, arthritis could become the epidemic of the future. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) project that by the year 2020, arthritis will affect nearly 60 million Americans. Even though "arth" means joint and "itis" means inflammation, some types of arthritis don't involve inflammation or the joints. One type, ankylosing spondylitis, involves inflamed ligaments attached to the bone. Lupus, another type of arthritis, is a connective tissue disease. Osteoarthritis, the most common type, is the result of a breakdown of cartilage in the joint; rheumatoid arthritis (RA) involves an inflamed joint membrane; and gout involves deposits of uric acid crystals in the joint fluid.

Vegetarian Diets in the Treatment of
Rheumatoid Arthritis by Kristine Duncan, MS, RD
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is estimated to affect 1% of the adult population worldwide (1), but appears most frequently in the elderly. It is defined as a chronic systemic disease characterized by inflammatory changes in joints and related structures that result in crippling deformities. The exact etiology is unknown, but it is assumed to be an auto-immune disease (2). An Italian survey of 46,693 people noted a strong correlation between vegetable consumption (odds ratio of 0.84) and decreased incidence of RA Food Elimination Vegetarian Diets Probably the most intensive study to look at the effects of diet on RA was conducted in Norway (8). Forty-five of the original 53 subjects were re-examined and comparisons were made between diet responders, non-responders and omnivorous controls at baseline and 2 years following introduction of the vegetarian diet (10). At follow-up, all diet responders and 50% of the non-responders were on some type of modified diet, described as either the original lacto-vegetarian study diet, or an omnivorous diet excluding foods identified by subjects as exacerbating their symptoms. Refined sugar, coffee, white flour and milk were most commonly excluded. There was significant improvement in disease symptoms in the diet responders compared to both non-responders and omnivore controls. There was also some improvement in non-responders on the vegetarian diet compared to the controls. Researchers concluded that patients with RA benefit from dietary manipulation with improvement lasting at least 2 years.

Several diet revision studies have shown benefit for patients with rheumatoid arthritis. These studies support the more common and persistent claims in the community that diet revision has benefits. Carinini and Brostoff reviewed the concepts of and evidence for food-induced arthritis. They stated: "Despite an increasing interest in food allergy and the conviction of innumerable patients with joint disease that certain foods exacerbate their symptoms, relatively little scientific attention has been paid to this relationship. Abnormalities of the gastrointestinal tract are commonly found in rheumatic disease...Support for an intestinal origin of antigens comes from studies of patients whose joint symptoms have improved on the avoidance of certain foods antigens, and become worse on consuming them. These have included patients with both intermittent symptoms, palindromic rheumatism and more chronic disease." In one study of diet revision, 33 of 45 patients with rheumatoid arthritis improved significantly on a hypoallergenic diet. The authors concluded: "Increasing numbers of scientific studies suggest that dietary manipulation may help at least some rheumatoid patients and perhaps the greatest need now is for more careful and well-designed research so that preconceptions may be put aside and role of diet, as a specific or even a non-specific adjunctive therapy, may be determined."

Osteoarthritis and Joint Pain Precautionary Measures
Weight Management Keeping body weight down, or reducing when body weight is too high, can greatly relieve the stress on weight-bearing joints. Overweight men and women have a substantially increased risk of knee osteoarthritis, and women have a slightly increased risk of hip osteoarthritis.
For men in their 20s, weight control appears to be especially important. Men in the highest one-third of the body mass index (BMI) had three times the risk of knee osteoarthritis as men in the leanest one-third (Gelber et al 1999). Although there are no experimental studies showing that weight loss is a means of reducing osteoarthritis symptoms and slowing the progress of the disease, it is prudent to slim down if you are overweight. In addition, there appears to be a general, perhaps metabolic, factor in obesity that increases the risk of osteoarthritis in all joints (Oliveria et al 1999).
In one study, a group of overweight women who saw an average weight loss of 11 lb. reduced their risk of getting osteoarthritis symptoms in the knees by about 50% (Felson et al 1992).
