There is as yet no real scientific evidence yet that a specific diet can alleviate or worsen the symptoms of arthritis. Claims regarding special magic diets are unproven by scientific research. There is, however, much evidence that a healthy, balanced diet is especially helpful for people with arthritis. Advertisement Step 2: Adopting new healthy habits

    DIET AND ARTHRITIS: THE FACTS
THE effect of diet - or lack of it - on arthritis is always guaranteed to raise hackles among rheumatologists probably more than any other topic. But while many doctors dismiss its effects as negligible, many patients swear that cutting out this or that particular food has helped their arthritic symptoms. There's so much conflicting evidence, and the fact that a great deal of nonsense is written about how to "cure" arthritis through diet doesn't help. Dozens of books vie with each other to suggest yet another method of ridding sufferers of pain and inflammation - often contradicting each other. Most rheumatologists - trained to believe in conventional drug therapies above all else - are particularly unreceptive to the idea that diet can help with arthritic conditions, pointing out to the lack of scientific evidence that it actually works. And yet. The public's thirst for knowledge, and to find something other than drugs and medication that might just work for them, seems boundless. Admittedly, some of the claims of people to excitedly contact the ARC with news about what "cured" them veer towards to wacky and weird - (two prunes and a capful of gin is one of the more memorable) but others are serious and sincerely believe that cutting out acid, or other types of food, have genuinely been of help.

    Food for thought
Jane Tadman separates fact from fiction in the great arthritis and diet debate. Hard facts are few and far between when it comes to the thorny topic of arthritis and diet, so let's start with the few we can be confident of.
A glance through some recent headlines illustrates this point. "Food to ease pain," says one respectable broadsheet. "Your anti-arthritis diet – nine vital steps to beating the pain and protecting your body against a crippling disease," declares a popular tabloid. The books are even worse: "A Doctor's Proven New Home Cure for Arthritis" vies for attention with "Arthritis Beaten Today." Every week the press offers a new Public Enemy Number One or, conversely, a new wonder food. One week tomatoes are the villains of the piece, the next it's citrus fruits or red wine. Cider vinegar, honey, and seaweed are regularly touted as having beneficial properties. But there is no evidence to prove that they work. Most rely on personal anecdote, or a small, unreliable trial, which is neither placebo-controlled or randomised nor published in a reputable scientific journal. Many manufacturers of these products rely on pseudo-science to market them, using scientific names which sound impressive to persuade the public of the seriousness of the product.

Can fasting or a vegetarian diet help control arthritis?
I have quite bad arthritis in my hands and knees. I've been told that fasting or eating a vegetarian diet can help to control the arthritis . What should I do? Gwen
    Dr Trisha Macnair responds
There has been a little bit of research to show that fasting can greatly reduce pain and symptoms during an acute worsening of arthritis, but it's not clear how useful this is. Arthritis is a chronic disease and we can't spend our life on a fast! It certainly isn't a cure, and it won't stop the disease. Also, it must be pointed out that this research was among people who had one particular type of arthritis - rheumatoid arthritis - and it's not certain that fasting helps at all in other types of arthritis. Fasting may reduce inflammation It seems that fasting, with a sudden drop of sugar or fats in the blood, may reduce the activity of some of the cells of the immune system. This seems to make sense - many people who've embarked on a major diet have discovered how they seem to become vulnerable to infections and catch colds, and so on. In acute worsening of rheumatoid arthritis, the pain and joint problems are a result of active inflammation in the joints. As inflammation is a process carried out by cells of the immune system, fasting may reduce inflammation.

Nearly 50% of persons 65 years of age have arthritis; younger people have a lower risk of having arthritis but still comprise half of all people affected. The self-reported prevalence of arthritis is greater among women than among men , and for women aged greater than 45 years, arthritis is the leading cause of activity limitation.

    Perseverance to be Pain Free
I was diagnosed with RA in 1995. I didn't know what RA was and had no concept of the damage it could do. The RA attacked my feet first and made it very painful to walk. There were times when I would be on crutches or have to use a cane. I read everything I could find on this terrible disease and learned I was fighting a losing battle. Being a very active person, I was not willing to accept limitations. Then I came across an article on breakthrough diets for Rheumatoid Arthritis. Around this time, my knee was acting up so much that my doctor had scheduled me for surgery. When I read this article I immediately tried the suggestions thinking I could avoid a surgery (I hate needles!). Upon trying this diet, my knee stopped swelling, the pain was gone and I could move my knee like it had never been affected! At my pre-op appointment my doctor was amazed, he couldn't believe he was looking at the same knee.
I have read a lot of articles over the years, and I developed a negative response to most of those joint cures, but this diet costs nothing, and may help you! If I help one person by writing this article I will be so happy. I want someone else to experience the success I have.

We've all heard the tales. "I quit eating meat (diary, wheat, potatoes, sugar, whatever the case may be) and I am cured of my arthritis." Call me a skeptic but I just don't think it is that easy. That isn't to say that diet doesn't have a role in treating arthritis, I just don't think it has a large impact in the majority of people. However, there is no doubt that eating a healthy, balanced diet can only improve our overall health and well being. I am a firm believer that each of us has to find what works for us personally. If a specific diet eased your symptoms, wonderful! We asked if a certain type helped your symptoms and though the response was slim, some of you have had success with diet modification. Here's what you said:
"I stay away from refined foods, dairy, meat, hydrogenated fats and I eat rice, rice pastas, vegetables raw and cooked, some non GMO soy products, various beans and bean dishes like Lentil soup, vegetarian chili etc." "Went on an elimination diet 4 years ago, primarily for hayfever but the allergy Dr was interested to see if it helped my arthritis aches. Off all dairy, wheat, nightshade plants, caffeine, tomatoes and a few other things. Re-introduced one type of food at a time every 2 days to see if there was a reaction. There wasn't - but my hayfever went away ( had been continual for 18 months) and so did arthritis aches. I stopped taking medication before the diet and did not need to go back on it for approx. 18mths - 2 years. Dr was puzzled as to what I was allergic to."

By Indra Devi Mataji claimed that 90% of those people who followed this diet get relief from their symptoms within ten days. For ten days eat a diet consisting only of 90% whole grain (brown or basmati) rice and 10% of any type of cooked squash. Add no flavorings to the diet. Every spoonful of rice is to be chewed at least 50 times until only a watery gruel remains in the mouth. Every two hours between meals have a relaxing non-caffeine tea. During the diet consume no other foods – no coffee, sugar or condiments. Drink half your body weight in ounces of water each day. For those with hypoglycemia who need more protein, you can add soybeans or tofu to this diet to maintain your energy level. Be prepared for your body’s release of toxins that are the cause of the arthritis. This may take the form of headaches, body pains, constipation, moodiness, irritability, etc. Practice being present to yourself and do not medicate yourself to avoid your feelings with addictive substances – sugar, caffeine, food cravings – nor avoid your true feelings by watching excessive TV or seeking other sensory stimulation. If you become constipated take an enema or one tablespoon of castor oil just prior to bed. If there is pain from the arthritis symptoms, take a raw potato and slice it to the size of the painful area. Lay the flesh of the potato against the painful site and tie it there with gauze. Let it stay until the potato becomes hard then replace it with another. This can be done during the day though it is especially good for overnight use.

through healthy eating (NC)-Vitamins and minerals have been shown to reduce the risk of certain chronic diseases such as cancer, heart disease and osteoporosis. Recent research is also showing that vitamins may play a role in protecting us against problems related to arthritis According to data from the Framingham Heart Study – an ongoing study of more than 5,000 men and women from Framingham, Mass., that started in 1948 – people with more vitamin C in their diets had higher bone density. Low bone density is a major risk factor for fractures. Higher bone density means stronger bones, as well as a reduced risk of osteoarthritis progression and even prevention of knee pain. This finding came from a study of 25,000 people conducted by British researchers at the University of Manchester and Cambridge University. Vitamin C is needed to make collagen, which makes up cartilage. Cartilage cushions bones, and not having enough leads to deterioration and osteoarthritis. Vitamin C is thought to play a role in treating rheumatoid arthritis because it battles free radicals that injure cartilage.
