Ultimate Martial Art?
by George S. Ledyard Discuss this article (14 replies) Download this article in PDF format Human beings are obsessed with conflict. Conflict attracts us just as a light will draw a moth into its orbit, even it ultimately means the destruction of the moth. Conflict of all sorts dominates our entertainment. Increasingly every aspect of our social life is viewed through the filter of polarization, us and them, winner and loser, right and wrong. As human beings we are virtually incapable of simply holding a pair of opposites, of allowing that two points of view can exist simultaneously, that twp interpretations can illuminate one another rather than negate each other. Any contradiction demands some sort of outcome in which one side or the other "wins", comes out on top, prevails over the other. There was a time in which martial arts had something to do with ones survival. If one were male and born into the warrior class, one would be the recipient of knowledge pertaining to combat which would directly relate to surviving on the battle field. If one were less fortunate, one would be a member of the lower classes and would be apt to find oneself conscripted into an army which would in turn fight some other army the purpose of which was to slaughter as many of the enemy's peasants as possible. Survival in these circumstances might come down to techniques learned in village wrestling matches, competitions with cudgels or staffs, tricks passed one from father to son, etc but would have little to do with coherent systems of combat or systematic training.

The Semiotics of Music Videos: It Must Be Written in the Stars
Author: Heidi Peeters
Published: May 2004 Abstract (E): This article builds a semiotic framework for the understanding of popular music videos, arguing that the key to such understanding is the figure of the star. Far from being chaotic visualizations of a song, music videos turn out to be tight constructions, featuring the star as narrator, character and ultimately as the central instigator of a universe that is utopian in nature and poetic in structure.

I have just had an odd conversation with a Dr. Uvbin Hadson (a distant relative as it happens) from the Lifford Institute of Electrochemical Sciences. The conversation was both intriguing and worrying. Dr. Handson claims to have developed an implementation of XSLT 1.0 xml -infoset/) into molecular structures. Once transcoded into molecular form, the transformation essentially consists of the simultaneous application of nano-templates (basically chemical reactions) that transform the source XML per the XSLT stylesheet. Handson claims that the side-effect free nature of XSL is key to this implementation as all templates can be executed *simultaneously* to generate the result infoset very, very quickly. (http://www.biglist.com/lists/ xsl-list /archives/199906/msg00406.html). At the end of the process, a reverse transcoding takes place to convert

Dutch Graphic Design
Amsterdam-based designer Shigeru Watano once remarked: "Analytical and rational design principles govern dutch design". He was right. Dutch graphic design has emerged from an essentially typographic tradition and this analytical background has resulted in a clear and well organised typography - a management of the page-, that is deeply concerned with visualising the hierarchies and the construction of texts. Departing from this base very different styles are possible: the 'classic' typographic style is a continuing, rich and living tradition in Holland, but it is another style, for which dutch graphic design has been internationaly recognised and applauded: a style that allows for a great variety of often rather complex images. A style that consists not only of a 'management of information', but that is also carrier of explicit personal interpretations and commentaries by the designer. Although I maintain that a typographical approach underlies most of dutch graphic design, the designers that I want to introduce here are generaly aiming at an image. Ordering information is the least one can do. On top of that the design must be evocative, emotional - and personal. Dutch graphic design is concerned with two - apparently conflicting - goals: To order information so that it becomes generaly recognisable, but at the same time to be recognisably individual: the designer, the carrier of messages, wants to assert himself aswell.

by George S. Ledyard Discuss this article (2 replies) Download this article in PDF format In the art of Aikido ukemi , the ability to initiate a movement with a partner and receive the technique which results, is half of the practice, as important as being able to execute the technique involved. But just as there are a number of stylistic interpretations on the technique side of the art, there are a number of ways in which these different styles teach ukemi Without discussing specific styles, the practice of technique ( waza ) can be divided into two methods. Static technique is designed to teach the practitioner how to draw power up through his structure from the earth and deliver it to his partner's center.
