Channel Four Simpsons Mosaics (UK)
This year in the UK, television channel BBC lost the rights to show The Simpsons to Channel Four. As the premiere of the show on Channel Four drew closer, they showed these "break bumpers". Made up of the Channel Four logo, these mosaic images were shown just before advert breaks. (Thanks to Gary for some of the images here.)
Comic Art
This stuff is really cool. The Halloween series of Simpsons Comics (Bart Simpsons Treehouse of Horror Comics) features comic strips in many different artwork styles. Below are just a few samples of this and other artwork from Simpsons Comics, I think you'll agree they look neat! Xt'Tapalatakettle's Day:
Similar to regular drawings, however the characters are given a slightly menacing look. (THOH #5)
Apu On Rigel 7:

Strip uses thick black lines and dark charcoal-like coloring. (THOH #5)
MetamorphSimpsons:

Homer has had a nightmare and wakes up...to find its not over. Nice shading on this one. (THOH #6)

Vector-style chunky shapes, outlines are mostly a light brown instead of black. Picture shows Groundskeeper Willy who is telling the story.

A MISCELLANEOUS ESSAY ON KARATE
by Chojun Miyagi
Remarks: This short article first appeared in "Bunka Okinawa" Vol.3 No.6 dated August 15, 1942, and re-appeared as an appendix in the book "Chugoku Okinawa Karate Kobudo No Genryu" written by Masahiro Nakamoto published on April 1, 1985 by Bunbukan.
(translated by Sanzinsoo)
I don't know when it was changed, but "karate" is now written with letters as "Empty Hand" instead of "Chinese Hand". Anyway, I am happy to know that nowadays karate is popular all over Japan as a unique Okinawan martial arts, and even it has been officially recognized by Dai Nippon Butokukai (=Great Japan Fighting Arts and Moral Association) as one of Japanese fighting arts. However, without doubt, I am sure that the roots of karate is in China. I suppose the prototype karate might be modified in various ways in my home Okinawa, but I think it is worth enough as we can see the evolution of karate which was influenced by the uniqueness of Okinawan culture. Therefore, maybe, it is not unreasonable to change the letters of karate as "Empty Hand" instead of "Chinese Hand".
Anyway, this time I would like to tell you my private opinion regarding, of course, karate as follows.

Information for Furry Artists' Pages
The purpose of our Furry Artist Pages is to give those furry artists with no other web page host a place to showcase their work. If you already have a page or ftp site somewhere we'll be happy to provide an Artist Index entry and a link directly to it. If not, we can create and host your page on Tigerden's web server. We will try to produce a quality page to hilight your work for you, but that quality will be dictated by the information you can provide to us. We obviously can't guarantee that you'll be swamped with orders as a result of your page being here, but we hope it will help.
Cost of Web Page Service
Providing links and hosting artist web pages is a free service . Because we do not charge for service and our bandwidth to the net is limited, we are unable to act as a complete archive site for all of an artist's works. Information regarding selection of sample works for your page is provided below.
Information Needed for Your Page
One way to see the things we need, and how they will be used, is to examine pages we have already. As a minimum, the following should be provided:
  • Your Name -
You may also include any text information you desire about yourself. Suggestions are where you live, interests, hobbies, and other personal biographical tidbits.

MISCELLANEOUS ARTS
(Revised 1/98) This category includes non-performance entries in any media not covered by other categories, that would fit as an art (as opposed to a science). See the List of Arts and List of Sciences to help determine which area the entry best fits. An entry which majorly requires creation skills and/or materials that fall into areas normally categorized as an art, should be considered a miscellaneous art as opposed to a miscellaneous science. An example of a miscellaneous art is Japanese cord braiding. This criteria applies to finished items only ; crafts involving only the preparation of materials for other uses should be entered in Material Preparation . (Ex: fabric painting, batik printing, paper-making). Novice Intermediate Advanced MISCELLANEOUS ARTS - NOVICE DOCUMENTATION (0-4 points) Must have at least a 3X5 card. More is acceptable. Give one point for each of the following that is present:
  • Identification/Description of the entry.
  • Approximate date and place/nationality in history that the entry is modeled upon.
  • Includes materials/tools list OR states method used to complete entry.

6.4.3 Miscellaneous Techniques and Comparison
Evaporation By now you may have wondered why the time-honored and widely used technique of evaporation has not been mentioned in context with Si technology. The answer is simple: It is practically not used . This is in contrast to other technologies, notably optics, where evaporation techniques played a major role. In consequence, this paragraph shall be kept extremely short. It mainly serves to teach you that there are more deposition techniques than meets the eye (while looking at a chip). What is the evaporation technique? If your eye glasses or your windshield ever fogged, you have seen it: Vapor condenses on a cold substrate. What works with water vapor also works with all other vapors, especially metal vapor. All you have to do is to create the vapor of your choice, always inside a vacuum vessel kept at a good vacuum. The (usually) metal atoms will leave the crucible or "boat" with an kinetic energy of a few eV and sooner or later will condense on the (cooled) substrate (and everywhere else if you don't take special precautions). Your substrate holder tends to be big, so you can accommodate several wafers at once (Opening up and loading vacuum vessels takes expensive time!)

Group Coaching Assists Women in Making a Successful Transition from Stay-at-Home-Mom to Professional Career Woman
Michele draws from her own experience when she states, “When women decide to take time off from their professional career to raise their children, they may not consider how difficult it can be to return to work when that time comes. They have a picture of what their life might look like once they begin working outside the home, but when the time comes to head back to the office, a myriad of unexpected events occur that require their attention away from their responsibilities at work. In order to successfully balance the rigor of work and home, women need a support structure that will make the transition smoother. This kind of support can come from their employer, spouse, family member or friend, but a new opportunity that is quickly gaining momentum is group coaching.” ...

Miscellaneous Stamping Tips
Stamping with makeup brushes
Contributed by:
Kimmie
Not sure if anyone is aware of this, but, I was needing some stipple brushes in a hurry for a card I wanted to make. I didn't have enough for all the colors I was incorporating into a card, so I went to my bathroom and found a bunch of make-up brushes (for applying blush to the cheeks). The big ones work great and the smaller ones you find in the compacts also work wonderfully (especially if you want just a touch of color).
Stamping with Eyeshadow
Contributed by:
Anesha Marshall
I found that pearlescent eye shadow works as well as powdered pearls. The photo of the card which I have sent was done using eyeshadows. The packground was done by stamping the image using clear embossing ink and the eyeshadow was then dab on but not rubbed, then the excess was brushed away. The main butterfly image was stamped using clear embossing powder an then several colours of eyeshadow was dabed on. Then using a blender pen and picking up some colours of eyeshadow the butterfly was cloured in. This did not take very long and I think is very effective. You can add the eyeshadow to clear embossing powder and emoboss with it, you can add gum arbic to it to make waterclours. There are many things you can do with it you just have to experiment and it's cheaper than many other things.

2. Edition of Handbook: Image Processing with HALCON
Tokyo, June, 2001 The publication of the Handbook on Practical Image Processing in October, 2000, was a great success - after a few months the first edition was completely sold out! Therefore, the authors decided to revise and extend the book. This second edition, named Image Processing with HALCON is now available, and several hundreds of copies have already been sold.
The Handbook on Practical Image Processing is a unique, comprehensive introduction in state-of-the-art techniques of machine vision. It is based on HALCON 6.0, and thus it not only covers the most common image processing techniques, but also shows how to effectively develop a concrete application and how to solve specific machine vision problems.
Amongst others, the second edition's extensions handle the new functionality of HALCON ; in addition, the Handbook now also covers a more detailed description of illumination and lens technology. Last but not least, the price was lowered dramatically, in order to suit even the budget of students. For the reduced price you obtain not only the book itself, but also a CD-ROM with all texts of the book and various examples.

Portrait Pointers
Curious about what is involved in the creation of a pastel portrait? Well, the same materials as those used in other pastel works are utilized when creating portraits. The tones and colors might vary, but the overall approach to technique, application, approach, and finishing is essentially identical. Since one of the most important elements in all pastel work is the paper (or other ground) onto which the artwork is done, that is the best place to begin our investigation. Paper choices can include anything from soft, neutral tones to vibrant and rich jewel tones. Darker tones offer the element of depth and color complement to the finished portrait. These colors peak through from beneath the skin tones and often give a glow to the work that is achieved in no other way. Such a case might be the use of a tone that is the direct complement to the tones used in the portrait. A mellowing of the overall work is achieved with this play of tones. Similar results can also be achieved by painting the surface of other grounds (canvas, panels, heavy watercolor paper, etc.).

In The Ch’i of the Brush, artist Nan Rae illustrates the fundamental elements and traditional motifs of the Literati style, which seeks to transcend the mere representation of a subject to capture its ch’i, or life force, by using a minimum of brush strokes for maximum effect. In the Literati style, no sketches are prepared and no models are used; instead, the artist paints with rapid, intuitive movements of the brush that convey his or her “mind image” of the subject.
