Straus Center for Conservation and Technical Studies Training Program
Established in 1928 by Edward W. Forbes and located in the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University, the department of conservation is the oldest fine arts conservation treatment, research, and training facility in the United States. The Center specializes in the conservation of works of art on paper, paintings, sculpture, decorative objects, and historic and archaeological artifacts. While the Center serves the Harvard University Art Museums, its clients encompass a range of institutions, including historical societies, regional or specialized museums, archives, libraries, and historical sites. The Center is also a training and teaching facility, for advanced-level conservation, art history students at Harvard University, museum trainees, and professionals already working in the field. As an outgrowth of these activities, the Center regularly conducts and publishes the results of research in conservation and art history. Conservation training at Harvard University was formalized in 1972 with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts.

FARP : A Diminutive Survival Guide to Oil Painting
Conjured up by Maria J. William ( maria@mariawilliam.net ), Gallery 45.
Introduction
If you came here hoping to find out everything there is to know about oil painting, I'll suggest that you refer to others sources. Thousands of fat books have been written on the subject, and to sum up everything in one little article for me, or anybody out there, would be mission: impossible. What I'll do is, tell you everything I know based on my own experiences, on what I've learned - myself or with the help of my artist friends (to whom I owe a LOT: you know who you are). Another thing to consider is, a book can never teach you everything. You can't teach, say... karate through words alone. Same with painting. You've got to get out there, get some tools and let yourself go - practice, experiment and practice more. Don't be afraid to fail. Just remember that it's always hard to succeed on the first try. As they say where I come from, "the first pancake always turns out a dumpling". Many artists consider oil painting annoying, frustrating or just plain "so hard it's not worth getting into". Others think it's good only for landscapes a-la Bob Ross, and that it's just impossible to achieve that smooth, clear blending. I've met some people who'd stare at my paintings and go, "You did this with oils? No way!" Way. And you can, too. What you'll need first of all (and in my opinion, most importantly) is lots of patience and faith that you can and will conquer this *evil* medium.

    Abstract
This document provides information to Web content developers who wish to satisfy the success criteria of "Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0" (currently a W3C Working Draft). The techniques in this document are specific to Hypertext Markup Language content although some techniques contain Cascading Style Sheet and ECMAScript solutions. Use of the illustrative techniques provided in this document may make it more likely for Web content to demonstrate conformance to WCAG 2.0 success criteria (by passing the relevant tests in the WCAG 2.0 test suite - to be developed ) than if these illustrative techniques are not used. There may be other techniques besides those provided in this document that may be used to demonstrate conformance to WCAG 2.0; in that case, it is encouraged to submit those techniques to the WCAG WG for consideration for inclusion in this document, so that the set of techniques maintained by the WCAG WG is as comprehensive as possible. Deprecated examples illustrate techniques that the Working Group no longer recommends, but may be applicable in some cases.

    Introduction
GPGPU stands for General-Purpose computation on GPUs . With the increasing programmability of commodity graphics processing units (GPUs), these chips are capable of performing more than the specific graphics computations for which they were designed. They are now capable coprocessors, and their high speed makes them useful for a variety of applications. The goal of this page is to catalog the current and historical use of GPUs for general-purpose computation. Contribute

Gift of Robert Arneson and Sandra Shannonhouse, 1990 ABOUT THE ARTIST Born in Benicia, California in 1930, Robert Arneson was encouraged by his father to draw. He became a proficient draftsman early in life and drew cartoons for a local newspaper as a teenager. After Arneson studied art education at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland he taught in a local high school, where he became interested in ceramics. He went on to receive an MFA from Mills College in 1958. Arneson became head of the ceramics department at the University of California at Davis in 1962 and became a full professor of art in 1973. ABOUT THE ART General Nuke addresses nuclear holocaust at a time of escalating tension between the United States and the Soviet Union, when both nations had temporarily abandoned negotiations on arms control. Arneson's image of General Nuke presents an aggressive, caustic stereotype of a military leader. With bloody fangs and a phallic MX "peacekeeper"missile for its nose, the snarling head wears the helmet of a three-star general, which is covered with a global military map incised with abbreviations for the available nuclear weapons: ICBM, IRBM, ACLM, SLBM. Some of the inscriptions ridicule those who, in Arneson's view, foster war, while other markings provide facts about the impact of a one-megaton bomb ("Fallout: lethal 600 sq. mi., death risk 2000 sq. mi."). Even the pedestal is part of the message: the head is mounted on a bronze column depicting hundreds of charred, stacked corpses. It rests on a base of granite, a pedestal traditionally used for memorials.

    Evolutionary Computation
and its application to art and design
    by Craig Reynolds
Evolutionary Computation is the general term for several computational techniques which are based to some degree on the evolution of biological life in the natural world. My work in evolutionary computation has related to evolution of behavior . I've used evolutionary systems to create behavior control programs for artificial agents. These evolved behavior relate to steering around a simulated environment. In particular I've experimented with corridor following where evolution determines both a sensor morphology and a mapping from sensor output to steering signal. I've also experimented with evolution of players for the game of tag where fitness is based solely on competition. The most widely used form of evolutionary computation are Genetic Algorithms . In my work I've used the Genetic Programming technique which allows the evolution of executable programs. (See also: GA GP

I'm especially interested in the use of evolutionary techniques to discover controllers for animated motion of real or virtual objects:
      • Karl Sims has evolved delightful virtual creatures based on their locomotion skills, and through coevolution has created others that play a certain wrestling game. In Karl's work both the behavior and the morphology (body structure) of the creatures are determined by animation. (See also: this

The books, websites and other media listed focus on costume construction, although they may include design instruction. I have avoided works that are project focused in favor of those that present techniques that can be applied widely. The design books included either show close-ups of garment construction details or include construction information. Books on costume design history and designers are in History of Theatrical Costume Design bookstore or photocopy the original.] Costume crafts include dying and painting, mask making, millinery (hat making), shoe making, trim making, studding and rhinestoning, jewelry making, and most techniques that go beyond the hand and machine sewing of basic garments. Some of these crafts I have put in separate categories, others I have grouped. What is here is a sampling of the various craft techniques that are useful in making costumes. Please consider this an introduction.
