Purposes of the Teaching Ideas Showcase Web Pages and Workshops
The purposes of the Teaching Ideas Showcase web pages and workshops are:
  • to explore ways that excellent children's literature, especially picture books, can be used to teach subjects across the curriculum, and at many different grade levels. These web pages and handouts also make use of, and highlight, the other types of materials and resources found in the Curriculum Laboratory, such as some of our teaching kits, and how they might be used creatively in the classroom.

There are many advantages of using children's literature, including picture books, as tools to teach concepts across the curriculum: in science, social studies, mathematics, art, and other curriculum topics. Some of them are:
1) Good picture books, and literature in general, can awaken the child in each one of us , which is not a bad thing, and is sometimes easily misplaced in our daily lives. The use of literature in teaching any subject can be a new, creative, and imaginative way to approach a topic

48. Teaching Ideas To Help Teachers And Parents Make Math Fun.
teaching ideas for teachers, parents, and homeschoolers aimed at making Math FOURTH Think of teaching as an art. There s no one way of doing it right.

Here's the first of a series of articles in which we'll give you practical teaching tips and ideas
to help you make math fun for your kids.
Teachers and Parents:
Here are some ideas on how to make math fun, amusing, and entertaining
for your kids (and for you!).
Dear Visitor, In this and other pages we'll try to give suggestions on teaching math, for both teachers and parents. This first page has some general ideas, and other pages will illustrate the general point with some very specific ideas. Children are like the rest of us: they tend to resist anything that looks like work, and to be beguiled by anything that amuses them. For many kids, math looks like work. So how can you a teacher or parent make math fun, amusing, and entertaining? Here are some suggestions to make math beguiling both for you and for your students. FIRST: spend a short time each class period (perhaps 5 minutes) on something mathematical which is puzzling or fascinating. For example, ask a perplexing question at the end of one class, and answer it at the beginning of the next. Here are some examples in each of seven categories:
  • Puzzles. What's the fewest number of colors needed to paint any map, if the rule is "no two countries sharing a boundary can be the same color"? Find a series of seven consecutive numbers none of which are prime.

Sources and Inspirations
Art nouveau designers were consciously trying to break free from past convention. In place of the historical revival styles neobaroque, neoclassical, Gothic revival that had dominated for a half century or more, they wanted, at the end of the nineteenth century, to find an art appropriate to modern life. This idea was expressed in a motto over the door of the Secession Building in Vienna: "Der Zeit ihre Kunst. Der Kunst ihre Freiheit" (To the age its art. To the art its freedom). This did not mean, however, that art nouveau was without sources and inspirations. The most important are discussed below. The English Arts and Crafts and Aesthetic Movements
England did not embrace art nouveau. Works in this style by English artists were most often sold abroad. But many of the design strategies and ideas that shaped art nouveau arose in England. It was there, which had industrialized faster than other nations, that dissatisfactions with "progress" first surfaced, prompting men like John Ruskin and William Morris to call for restoration of the standards of craftsmanship practiced in past eras. Ruskin believed objects could be both useful and beautiful and that their decoration should derive from nature. Morris, designer and committed socialist, became the defining figure of the

The descriptive detail in The Reader is both colorful and appealing to the imagination. Select a descriptive passage. Sketch or paint it based on the author's words. Research the art of post Nazi Germany. What does it reveal? Consider the impact of the social and political conditions on the art of the period. During the Nazi regime, much art was confiscated; some has been rediscovered; other pieces have never been found. Locate information on the rediscovered art. Visit the Holocaust Museum and respond to the art. Some of the horror the era has been recorded in photographs. Locate photography of the Holocaust. Discuss its artistic and historical value. Draw a portrait of Hannah and/or Michael based on the words and image of the author.
Business
Discuss the economics in Germany in the post Nazi era. Research the present economic situation in Germany. What happened to those who owned businesses when the Nazis were in control? How were businesses acquired or destroyed by the Nazi government. What groups were especially targeted due to prejudice?

Teaching Non-Western Aesthetics, Teaching Popular Art
Crispin Sartwell I’ve come to think that’s not the students’ fault. Art and philosophy as those things are often thought of in our culture are irrelevant to their lives, and that’s okay. In fact, I would say that western philosophy and western fine art are designed to be irrelevant to the lives of most folks. They are supposed to be incomprehensible to people like most of the students I have taught. We aestheticians and our discipline are one little node of this exclusion; we’re the location at which people can be excluded simultaneously from art and from philosophy. And then we’re liable to whine that no one’s interested. In my opinion, most people shouldn’t be interested in what we do; it’s fundamentally boring and irrelevant. If people were interested in what we do, if they could actually find a place for it in their lives, we’d move on to something else, something more complicated, something concerning even less accessible objects; we’d develop an even duller jargon, if such a thing is possible. All right, that’s the Cliff Note version of my diatribe. But I’ll give you the cure as well. First of all, if you take a decently broad and respectful notion of art, art already plays an important role in the life of every student. Second, the western tradition is the only tradition that performs this particular set of exclusions, that expresses its fears and hatreds of the world and of the great unwashed in this particular ideology.

is not a major scholarly website put together by a staff of technology junkies, but rather a working document collected by a practicing middle school teacher. The lesson ideas presented here are nothing fancy and many of them are not complete lessons – for that you can go to dozens of other websites. All that I offer here is a collection of bits and pieces that might help a teacher of Louisiana history to fill in the gaps What I really need is for teachers to stop thinking that their lessons are not good enough. Many fellow teachers are looking for one "bright idea" to use in class. No one really needs a “full blown, GLE-encoded, state mandated lesson”. Most of us have those, we just need that one little worksheet or activity to round out our own lessons. So please take the time to send an email and attach that word document that you put together last week. Make it a habit. When you create something for your class, it to me so that other teachers don't have to "re-invent the wheel". It's also a great place for you to store your work sheets for later use. Help us all help the kids.
