Artwork Inspired by the Masters
My third graders read a book on Vincent vanGogh and studied the way his pictures had movement in them. We looked at the paintings "Starry Night " and "Starry Night over the Rhone" by van Gogh. The students were then instructed to design their own starry nights and to show movement in their skies. We used a crayon resist method (coloring dark and then water colors over the top). When designing the board I put a quote from vanGogh and some pictures of the artists over his lifetime. Copies of the paintings... source

" Imagination is more important than knowledge" ~
    Albert Einstein
Choice Based Art Education fosters imagination. Teachers all across the country are "discovering" how to motivate children through the method of instruction known as Choice Based Art Education (Teaching for Artistic Behavior - or TAB Choice Partnership is an organization of teachers who teach using this method ). Centers are set up in the elementary and middle school art classrooms and students choose which centers to participate in for the day. High school students are self directed in their studies and studio work. While definitive research on this topic is not available online, some Choice teachers are finding a positive affect this method has on learning in the core curriculum. Find out more about TAB Choice from Knowledge Loom Web Site . "Choice-based art education regards students as artists and offers students real choices for responding to their own ideas and interests through art making."

The workshop examines how principles of good teaching are carried out in teaching the arts at the high school level. In the eight one-hour video programs, seven principles of effective teaching are introduced, then explored in depth. Teachers from arts magnet high schools and comprehensive high schools across the country are shown demonstrating their practice and discussing their goals, methods, and experiences. An interactive Web site and a print guide support and augment the video programs. The Web site includes activities for workshop sessions that encourage participants to draw on their own experiences; background on the schools and teachers featured in the video programs; and interactive features that provide perspective on the teaching principles.

For this year's Annual IdeaBook, Teaching K-8 asked our subscribers across the country for their best teaching ideas. Their responses: A wonderful assortment of ideas, ranging from diaries kept by pet rocks to a model of the Emerald City of Oz (complete with yellow brick road). There are 27 teaching ideas here - one for each year Teaching K-8 has been publishing - and we think you'll find them all helpful.
Say It with Music (and Art, Too)
I love teaching language arts with the benefits of art and music. By designing art-related assignments, I'm able to "draw" out students who are good with their hands or feet or voice and can explain artistically the impact of a piece of literature on them.
Having the kids construct a board game to review a unit, create and perform a rap on a character, illustrate a favorite scene, or create a parable using a peer's personality produces some wonderfully creative and artistic reflections.
An event I hold twice a year is our Camden Coffee House, where I provide refreshments and the students share their artistic accomplishments which make our class and life so enjoyable.
