    ART AND ARCHITECTURE
More than 4,000 years ago the valleys of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers began to teem with lifefirst the Sumerian, then the Babylonian, Assyrian, Chaldean, and Persian empires. Here too excavations have unearthed evidence of great skill and artistry. From Sumeria have come examples of fine works in marble, diorite, hammered gold, and lapis lazuli. Of the many portraits produced in this area, some of the best are those of Gudea, ruler of Lagash. Some of the portraits are in marble, others, such as the one in the Louvre in Paris, are cut in gray-black diorite. Dating from about 2400 BC, they have the smooth perfection and idealized features of the classical period in Sumerian art. Sumerian art and architecture was ornate and complex. Clay was the Sumerians' most abundant material. Stone, wood, and metal had to be imported. Art was primarily used for religious purposes. Painting and sculpture was the main median used. Marble Statues The famous votive stone/ marble sculptures from Tell Asmar represent tall, bearded figures with huge, staring eyes and long, pleated skirts. Enlarged eyes were found on many statues The tallest figure is about 30 inches in height. He represents the god of vegetation. The next tallest represents a mother goddess-mother goddesses were common in many ancient cultures. They were worshipped in the hope that they would bring fertility to women and to crops. (Another connection to African culture.)

    • Lawrence sculptor Dave Werdin-Kennicott’s latest work belongs in the latter category — that of something different and special. “This is not the typical tree-trunk carving that you’d see. The stereotype is a grizzly bear or a nest of eagles or a mountain man with a corncob pipe,” he says. On the east side of Dr. Dave and Gunda Hiebert’s Lawrence home, Werdin-Kennicott has been working eight hours a day, five days a week since June to create a 7-foot-tall wooden Buddha out of a stump that is all that remains of a diseased black locust tree. When it’s done, sometime in the next few weeks, the sculpture will look stunningly like a piece in the Asian collection at KU’s Spencer Museum of Art — the Standing Amida Buddha, a Japanese wooden Buddha from the 1400s that the museum acquired in 1990. Found in Kyoto, Japan, it was obtained with a gift from former KU Chancellor W. Clarke Wescoe and his wife, Barbara Benton Wescoe.

    African Shona Stone Sculpture Paintings
We are in the process of updating our site, more info and art is on the way. Red Eagle Gallery presents the finest Arican stone sculpture created in the Shona tradition of excellence—to be found outside of Zimbabwe, Africa. Using fair trade practices, owners Samuel and Judy Bryant, select each piece from the artists of Zimbabwe , contributing directly and significantly to the artists’ extended families and to the economy of Zimbabwe. Samuel Bryant is Red Eagle. This name was given to him in a vision on the Nez Perce Indian Reservation in eastern Oregon years before opening the gallery or visiting Zimbabwe . The national symbol of that country is the eagle, known as Chapungu (chah poong´goo) in the Shona language. Sacred to the Shona, Chapungu is the messenger between humans and Creator, with the same role as the Bald Eagle to the indigenous people of North America. Browse our galleries for the finest hand-carved African stone sculpture, paintings, batiks, and baskets.

    http://www.wcnet.org/~clong/carving/carving.html
Carving for Mathematical Understanding of Surfaces
Cliff Long It was almost thirty years ago that I carved a bug on a band (patterned after a sculpture seen as a boy at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago). It was carved from a solid piece of white pine, to illustrate that a Moebius band is one-sided. Once around a circle and the bug is upside down; twice around and it is right-side up again. Such a band (or surface) is called non-orientable. This band also has only one edge and is called a spanning surface of that edge, which is itself homeomorphic to a circle (or unknot) in three space. Only recently, upon seeing a computer stereo image of a spanning surface for a trefoil knot (or three-knot) in an article on heart arrythmia [1], I again resorted to a wood carving to gain an understanding of the surface - this time an orientable one. This carving reminded me to return to the Topological Picture Book by George Francis [2], and later to the book Knots , by Livingston [3] for more recent information on knots and spanning surfaces. In the meantime I was teaching third semester calculus, where we were encountering the Frenet frame determined via the tangent, velocity, and acceleration vectors to a curve in 3-D (such as our trefoil knots). Hence, it seemed natural to

Julius Bryant, the curator of this beguiling show, takes it to mean advanced in its time. Banks was called 'a modern artist' (actually in a derogatory sense) by George Grenville in 1778 and Reynolds is reported to have said that he was 'the first British sculptor who produced works of classic grace', and that his 'mind was ever dwelling on subjects worthy of an ancient Greek'. As late as 1871, W.B. Scott called Banks 'the first true sculptor in our modern school'. His modernity consisted, not in slavish imitation of the antique, but in original inventions of mythologies.

Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. Subtractive sculpture presents many challenges to the best of sculptors. I chose to introduce my Art I students to carving through the eyes of the Olmecs. That is how "The Big Heads" lesson was born. The students began by researching, through books and slides, the "big head" sculptures of the Olmec people of ancient Mexico. About three years ago, I had the good fortune to be at the National Gallery in Washington, D.C. when it exhibited Olmec art of Mexico. While visiting the exhibition I picked Up a poster and a few catalogs from the show. How perfect for this lesson! The students and I employed our interpretive and analytical skills to discussing these marvelous static sculptures carved from limestone. We noticed the simple geometric design patterns and bas-relief carvings with interest. The students pointed out the juxtaposition of animal and human features in many of the sculptures. This observation gave us a chance to discuss possible meanings and connections to religious, ritualistic or the cultural beliefs of these early people and compare it to our own. As we talked, I encouraged the students to take notes and make sketches from the slides in their sketchbooks. These "field notes" would come in handy later.
