"The Fisherman" Male Belted Kingfisher on Spanish Moss Dimensions 28" x 10" x 10" Media The challenges in this piece were to capture the complex crest of this bird and to realistically sculpt Spanish moss with a medium that would last. The bird was carved out of a single piece of wood and no inserts were used in the crest. Its eyes are made of glass and its legs and feet are sculpted out of brass and ribbon epoxy. The Spanish moss is sculpted out of small gauge copper wire and soldered together. I deliberately chose the male kingfisher over the more brightly colored female to limit the overall palette and achieve greater color harmony throughout the piece. Sculpture Department Sculpture simply means the creation of objects, using various kinds of materials. The objects that surround us in daily life are all creations with specific functions. The sculptor imagines new objects for no other purpose than self-expression. In Kyoto Seika University`s Department of Sculpture, students initially work towards proper understanding of the mechanisms and techniques involved in creating a piece of sculpture, and their perception of color and shape is developed. The relationships between person and object, and object to object, are analyzed in both a psychological sense and a physical sense, to provide better understanding of this art form through both subjective and objective observation. By exploring the propertes of many different materials, a variety of themes and motives, and by gaining broad personal experience, students discover working and conceptual methods most comfortable to them in developing their subjective imagination. Living in our highly technological world, how do you feel about personal creativity? Do you have original ideas? If so, in sculpture you`ll find opportunities to create new, unprecedented forms of artwork, and to use materials arising from new technological advances in addition to familiar materials from the natural world. Our students find ways to create works of art relating to this modern world not only in the material sense but also in a mental and spiritual sense, works that are highly innovative in the field of sculpture.
