Scotlandbased site summarizing school experiences, with links to support organizations.
    http://www.antibullying.net/homophobicbullying.htm
Is homophobic bullying a problem in schools? Homophobic bullying has been reported in primary, as well as secondary schools. It may be directed at young people of any sexual orientation and at children who have not yet reached puberty. Teachers, parents and other adults in schools may also be bullied in this way. Homophobic bullying in schools can be a problem in a number of ways:
    • Children who experience it have their education disrupted. They may be unable to concentrate on lessons because of feelings of fear or anger. Their self-confidence may be damaged and, as a result, they may never fulfil their academic potential. It can be a particular problem for teenagers who are confused or unsure about their own developing sexuality. Some victims are driven to the edge of despair or beyond, with lasting consequences for their emotional health and development. Schools that ignore it, or deny its existence, are not helping young people to develop a concern for the welfare of minorities and tolerance of difference.

Issues and Answers: Fact Sheet on Sexuality Education
Sexuality education is the lifelong process of building a strong foundation for sexual health. Sexuality education takes place on a daily basis in homes, schools, faith-based institutions, and through the media. While this topic is often discussed, myths and misunderstandings persist. This fact sheet is designed to clarify this issue for parents, educators, health care professionals, policymakers, the media, and others so they can better understand the complexities and the importance of sexuality education. (Published in the SIECUS Report, Volume 29, Number 6 - August/September 2001) LEARNING ABOUT SEXUALITY Issue: What is sexuality education? Answer: Sexuality education is a lifelong process of acquiring information and forming attitudes, beliefs, and values. It encompasses sexual development, reproductive health, interpersonal relationships, affection, intimacy, body image, and gender roles. Sexuality education addresses the biological, sociocultural, psychological, and spiritual dimensions of sexuality from the cognitive domain (information); the affective domain (feelings, values, and attitudes); and the behavioral domain (communication and decision-making skills). Issue: Where do young people learn about sexuality?

CHARLESTON, West Virginia (AP) A judge has ended 20 years of court oversight of West Virginia's schools, saying the state is making an honest effort to narrow the funding gap between rich and poor districts. While lawmakers never made the sweeping changes he envisioned, state Circuit Judge Arthur Recht praised a 1998 law that offers more money to poorly performing schools, and he said the system should be given a chance to work. He said the governor and Legislature now recognize they have a legal and moral commitment to provide a "thorough and efficient" education for all of West Virginia's 280,000 public school students. West Virginia has routinely received poor grades for education. The National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education in 2000 gave the state a "D" in student preparation for college and participation in higher education. About 77 percent of the state's adults that year had a high school diploma, compared with 84 percent nationally. The case began after parents complained in a 1975 lawsuit that youngsters in poor districts were getting shortchanged by the state's school funding system and were falling behind.

CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) Soft drinks should be eliminated from schools to help tackle the nation's obesity epidemic and pediatricians should work with their local schools to ensure that children are offered healthful alternatives, the American Academy of Pediatrics says. In a new policy statement, the academy says doctors should contact superintendents and school board members and "emphasize the notion that every school in every district shares a responsibility for the nutritional health of its students." Some schools already limit contracts with vendors of soft drinks and fast foods, though the soft drink industry has fought efforts by some states to mandate such restrictions. While some schools rely on funds from vending machines to pay for student activities, the new policy says elementary and high schools should avoid such contracts, and that those with existing contracts should impose restrictions to avoid promoting overconsumption by kids.
