Senate considers free fruits, veggies for schools
Some politicians said the availability of fresh fruits and vegetables at schools might curb consumption of unhealthy snacks. WASHINGTON (AP) Offering school kids a free apple or banana might get them to eat less junk food, says the chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, says a new farm bill that Congress is writing will subsidize the cost of giving away fruit and vegetables in some school cafeterias as an alternative to candy and snacks that are sold in vending machines. "We want our kids to eat more fruits and vegetables," said Harkin, who outlined his idea to a gathering of produce growers. "If we start out young in life eating more fruits and vegetables, then we can do that during our lifetime." Details of the program haven't been worked out, and Harkin conceded the problems inherent in storing perishable commodities. An aide said the giveaway probably would start out as a pilot project in a limited number of schools.

Directory for Martial Arts schools
Directory to martial arts schools is available in this article and provides some guidelines on selecting the best program for one's goals.
Most people gain their only perception of the martial arts through what they see on television and in the movies. Few have actually set foot in a dojo (the Japanese word for the karate gym) or have witnessed the intense training required to become a martial arts expert. Yet, many individuals desire to learn one of the many ancient oriental fighting styles for a number of reasons. If you are planning to attend a school for the martial arts there are a few things you should do in preparation, so that you can select the best school to help you achieve your goals. Initially, you must decide why you want to learn a martial art. Is it for self-defense, fitness, competition and tournaments, mental relaxation, or a combination of these? This is very important because there are many different kinds of martial arts and many different kinds of self-defense schools. In a moment we will examine each of these reasons for becoming involved in the martial arts, but let us first look at a few of the styles of martial arts and their philosophies. There are literally hundreds of styles of martial arts throughout the world today. Although the main body of fighting styles is found withing the orient (China, Japan, Korea, etc.), many styles have origins in other countries. However, regardless of the country of origin, martial arts styles tend to fall into one of two categories. These are 'hard' and 'soft'. Sometimes they are also referred to as 'external' and 'internal' respectively. It is important that you know a little bit about each category because it will influence the choice you make.

New law OKs transfers from failing schools
Story Tools
RELATED U.S. Education Department Center on Education Policy WASHINGTON (AP) School districts cannot use overcrowded classes in better-performing schools as an excuse to keep students from transferring from failing schools, according to new federal regulations. A federal education law signed by President Bush in January makes more federal money available for elementary and secondary education, but holds educators accountable for failures in teaching the nation's 48 million public school students. If a failing school does not make progress, parents must be offered the chance to transfer their children to another school even if that school is full, according to a final version of the regulations released last week by the Education Department. "Parents must be given options for seeking better and expanded learning opportunities for their children," Education Secretary Rod Paige said. "The American people have made it clear that they want schools held accountable for delivering a world-class education for every child." Jack Jennings, director of the Center on Education Policy think tank in Washington, said offering the choice of transferring students from failing schools is good, but the Education Department "has interpreted the law to make this almost an absolute right of parents regardless of other factors."

Illustration Daniel Clowes Before I can fire off my first question, Daniel Clowes, who is tall and lanky, with large blue eyes and a dry, half-mumbled wit, pulls out a photo of his 1-year-old, Charlie. "I used to hate it when people forced their baby pictures on me," he says, shaking his head. "Now I can't stop doing it myself." Fatherhood, like filmmaking, feels new to Clowes, who won loud praise in 2000 for the screenplay adaptation of his serial comic Ghost World . As luck would have it, Charlie was born the morning MGM green-lighted Dad's second coming-of-age film, Art School Confidential . The picture, which stars John Malkovich and Anjelica Huston and is due out in September, is written and produced by Clowes, based on a four-page send-up of his own education at New York's Pratt Institute that appeared in an early issue of his comic book Eightball . How did Clowes find his way down the unlikely path from comic-book geek to Hollywood A-lister? It all started with Superman.

Learn What You Can Do! As a culture, we are focusing new attention on childhood bullying and harassment. As we watch children being crushed by bullying, we often feel powerless. No more!
There are ways to stop bullying, based on decades of research. There is little need to describe why people want to stop childhood bullying. Childhood bullies are more likely to become young adult criminals than are non-bullies. Bullied children may grow up with diminished self-confidence. We sometimes see bullying as an inevitable part of childhood. Yet, according to world-wide research, 50% reductions in rates of bullying are possible. The Stop Bullying Now intervention is based on Dan Olweus's research and on social worker Stan Davis's thirty-five years of experience with children, families, and schools. The links on this site will lead you through an exploration of interventions that work to reduce bullying in schools.

Food fight: Soy pushes for space in schools
Jackie Domac, the health department chairwoman for a California school, poses in the cafeteria with milk and a soy alternative. Story Tools RELATED American Soybean Association International Dairy Foods Association WASHINGTON (AP) A food fight is brewing in school cafeterias that could elbow aside the long-standing drink of choice milk to make some room for soy. Soybean growers and the soy foods industry are pushing the government to reimburse schools that decide to offer soy milk as well as cow's milk. They say it is a healthy option, particularly for youngsters who have trouble digesting milk. Under current law, school districts can be reimbursed for soy milk or lactose-free milk only if a student has a doctor's note. Dairy farmers, who for years have held the beverage monopoly in the federal school lunch program, are resisting the change. They say nothing is as healthy as cow's milk with its calcium and vitamins A and D. The Senate Agriculture Committee plans to take up the issue Tuesday when it holds its first hearing on reauthorizing the National School Lunch Act, which subsidizes school meals.

    Update June 7, 2005
SB 412 passed through the State Senate on June 1, 2005 and is now in the Assembly for consideration. According to the Assembly schedule, it has to go through Assembly committees and be voted on in the Assembly by September 9. It could be signed by Oct. 9 and it could be law by January 1. However, the author of the bill, Senator Figueroa, is going to introduce some changes in the language of the bill, changes that were discussed at a meeting attended by Teresa Nead, Bob Benson and others, and that could possibly delay passage of the bill. Bill Gage, chief consultant for the Business, Professions and Economic Development committee, is working on all the suggestions from that meeting, as well as feedback from non-massage groups like the Polarity Assocation, Trager, Reflexology and others. He is working on incorporating into SB 412 some of the elements such as grandfathering which were in the previous bill (AB 1388).

Clerks Regular of the Pious Schools
Called also Piarists, Scolopli, Escolapios, Poor Clerks of the Mother of God, and the Pauline Congregation, a religious order founded in Rome in 1597 by St. Joseph Calasanctius . As a member of the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine he went about the country instructing the people, and his experience convinced him of the necessity of providing the children of the poor with religious instruction at an early age. Antonio Brendoni, pastor of Santa Dorotea in Trastevere, placed two rooms at his disposal and assisted him in the work, in which they were afterwards joined by two other priests. It was not long before the reputation of the school increased the attendance to such an extent that Calasanctius removed it to a building within the city, where he took up his residence with his companions. When two years later the school was again removed, this time to the Vestri Palace in the vicinity of Sant' Andrea della Valle, community life was inaugurated among the associates, and Clement VIII showed his approval of the work by ordering the payment of a yearly allowance of 200 scudi for rent of the house. Criticism ensued which led to an inspection of the schools by Cardinals Antoniani and Baronius, which resulted satisfactorily, the approval of
