biab exists to help you find out about archaeology via the published sources. The biab online database contains datasets covering publications from AD 1695 to the present day on archaeology and the historic environment, historic buildings, maritime and industrial archaeology, environmental history, and the conservation of material culture - with a geographical focus on Britain and Ireland. The first biab online user survey is now closed - our thanks to all who took part. Future surveys are planned. Latest data update news: new material will be added to the online service shortly. Service developments will also be announced soon. Access to the c 200,000 records in the biab online database is free to all. THE SHROUD OF TURIN RESEARCH AT McCRONE RESEARCH INSTITUTE
The Shroud of Turin
According to Dr. Walter McCrone and his colleagues, the 3+ by 14+ foot cloth depicting Christ's crucified body is an inspired painting produced by a Medieval artist just before its first appearance in recorded history in 1356. The faint sepia image is made up of billions of submicron pigment particles (red ochre and vermilion) in a collagen tempera medium. Dr. McCrone determined this by polarized light microscopy in 1979. This included careful inspection of thousands of linen fibers from 32 different areas (Shroud and sample points) , characterization of the only colored image-forming particles by color, refractive indices, polarized light microscopy, size, shape, and microchemical tests for iron, mercury, and body fluids. The paint pigments were dispersed in a collagen tempera (produced in medieval times, perhaps, from parchment). It is chemically distinctly different in composition from blood but readily detected and identified microscopically by microchemical staining reactions. Forensic tests for blood were uniformly negative on fibers from the blood-image tapes.
There is no blood in any image area, only red ochre and vermilion in a collagen tempera medium. The red ochre is present on 20 of both body- and blood-image tapes; the vermilion only on 11 blood-image tapes. Both pigments are absent on the 12 non-image tape fibers.

    The Mysterious Origins of Man:
The Oronteus Finaeus Map of 1532
    Paul Heinrich

[Last Update: June 6, 1996] The segment of The Mysterious Origins of Man concerning the Oronteus Finaeus Map of 1532 starts out with Charlton Heston stating that Dr. Charles Hapgood [author of Maps of the Ancient Sea Kings , Hapgood (1966, 1979)], made a "startling discovery" while he was combing through the map room at the Library of Congress. MOM then quotes Dr. Hapgood as saying: As my eyes fell upon the southern hemisphere of a world map drawn by a Oronteus Finaeus in 1532, I had the instant conviction that I had found here a truly authentic map of the real Antarctica. Unfortunately, this conviction likely so prejudiced his ideas concerning the Oronteus Finaeus Map that he was unable to evaluate it objectively. Once Dr. Hapgood knew he had an authentic map of Antarctica, he proceeded to overlooked, as is later explained, many serious problems with this map being an accurate, although possibly still authentic, map of Antarctica. In MOM, Mr. Graham Hancock stated:

SELECT A CATEGORY THE ARTS BUSINESS TECHNOLOGY TEXAS HOME BUSINESS ENTREPRENEURSHIP > FEATURE Internet Business Method Patents
The rise of the World Wide Web, the change in PTO policy, and the endorsement of the Federal Circuit prompted a flood of Internet business method patent applications. Only 170 applications for business method patents were filed in fiscal year 1995. By 1999, the number of business method patent applications received and granted by the PTO had increased to 2,700 and 583, respectively; in 2000, to 7,900 and 899 in 2000. The number of applications was expected to reach 12,000 for 2001. The Controversy: Inventiveness and Distribution Congress responded to the prior art criticisms with several proposed and enacted reforms, most of which focused on reforming the processes through which the PTO reviews business method patents, especially prior art.4 Congress also passed the First Inventor Defense Act of 1999, which allows firms to be excused from violating a business method patent if that firm could prove that it used the invention more than one year before the filing of the business method patent. This provision was important to ensure that companies that had relied on trade secret protection for their business methods would not be undermined by the expansion in patent protection. What the Data Show To evaluate some of the concerns regarding Internet business methods, we examined a full set of 1,093 Internet business method patents issued from January 1, 1990 to January 1, 2000 (I-business method set), most of which were issued during the last three years of the decade.6 We compared these with a random set of 1,000 patents issued by the PTO across all fields of invention between mid-1996 and mid-1998 (general patent set) to see how Internet business method patents stacked up in terms of prior art and ownership, both in terms of entity size and foreign v. U.S. ownership.7 Most of the patents from the Ibusiness method set were issued after 1996, so the time periods of the two data sets are compatible for comparison.
