Bibliography: Synesthesia in Art and Science

Synesthesia is a specific condition that occurs when an individual who receives a stimulus in one sense modality simultaneously experiences a sensation in another. In the last two centuries, the subject has aroused the interest of many artists and scientists. The existence of synesthesia seems at odds with the common-sense worldview of five separate senses that channel impressions to our minds. Intrigued by this apparent anomaly of the senses, artists and scientists have explored and experimented with synesthesia in order to reveal how the senses are interrelated. This bibliography contains a list of references to literature (some online) on these explorations and experiments by visual artists, musicians, writers, psychologists, neurologists, linguists, anthropologists (and other scientists) into the strange phenomenon of synesthesia. The bibliography consists of three sections:

From Artists...
March 5, 2005
Hi Eric,
I just wanted to thank you for taking the time to met with me this past weekend. I was really impressed that in this increasingly rapidly paced day of computers, the internet and skyrocketing technology you still chose to take time to personally sit down with me and discuss my needs as an artist. I really appreciate that. I think that says a lot about the people at art-exchange. I had an incredible time just walking around and taking all that wonderful work that was being shown. It was very inspiring. I hope next year to have a booth myself! Thanks again for meeting with me. I look forward to a mutually prosperous relationship with art-exchange.com.

Dear art-exchange:
I am glad that I was sitting down when you called and informed me that you had sold not one, but three of my paintings. Your organization, Beth, and that of your enthusiastic staff made this transcation easy and very professional. Thank all of you for your efforts. I will certainly be replacing these

The Materiality of Contemporary Art in Vanuatu
Haidy Geismar Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, Cambridge University, UK Close examination of material forms and the social relations within which they are embedded soon reveals that things have the capability to affect the way people think. Here, I focus on the recent development of the category of contemporary art in Vanuatu, a nation comprising over 70 inhabited islands in the south-western Pacific ocean. Contemporary art in Vanuatu is a local classification that draws on both traditional objects and iconographies to create new objects in new media

All additions and corrections gratefully received. 1. The time of the first songs [[Obviously the first shot is of Munich. I do think it makes sense to point out the twin spired Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady) which is not only the symbol of Munich, but also a silent character throughout DZH. For folks like me who have never been there it is not a familiar sight. This might be the place for a one paragraph history about Munich and Bavaria. My guidebook says, "Munich has never been innovative, and has always been averse to new ideasunless it was opportune to move with the times."]] [[I think a little on the Hunsruck region of The Rhineland is also helpful, although it is well known from Heimat.]]
