Frames BIOGRAPHY William Edward Morris (b.1935 Canadian) was born in Montreal and raised in Montreal's Outremont neighborhood. The stately architecture which abounds this historic and venerable part of the city had an early and profound effect on the artist, as is in evidence in his paintings' portrayal of inner city life. In his formative years, Morris studied at L'Ecole des Beaux Arts (Montreal) under one of the renowned "Group of Seven" Canadian artists Arthur Lismer. In secondary school in Montreal he was greatly influenced by the famous Canadian artist Anne Douglas Savage. Morris later went on to a notable and longstanding career as a professional Architect and practiced for many years. Having combined his own feelings of the inner city with interpretations of today's and yesteryear's nostalgia he has accomplished a unique style which is evident in his paintings. Morris' paintings are a blend of impressionism and realism. His work reveals a keen insight into the elements of architecture and life's daily place within its context. They reveal scenes of Canadian and American cities embracing both pastoral and bustling city urban environment. Recently Morris has developed a love of painting garden scenes which he calls "gardenscapes". These paintings are either oils or acrylics on canvas or masonite. Morris has traveled extensively and spent much of his time painting Canadian and American scenes.

Design Landscape Beginnings for Oils and Acrylics by Bill DeLoach Introduction The landscape is one of the oldest subjects rendered by man. Manifested in the content of cave wall drawings, themes have been nestled into the weave of wall tapestries, rugs, robes and gowns, and splashed across everything from canvas and freeway over passes to subway trains; its popularity remains. Their creation comes from all sorts of media, beginning with charcoal, through the common egg, to wire and steel, with the tools and methods limited only by the imagination. Remember landscapes need not be confined to a two-dimensional surface such the canvas/Gessobord. Three-dimensional forms (decorative wood objects, or metal and glass objects to name a few) add interest and a different perspective to the subject. Check out some of those freeway overpasses in cities like LA or Chicago! You'll see what I mean. I use just a few brushes; bristles are my mainstays while blends are use for more detail work. A somewhat limited palette of the three primary colors, a warm and cool of each, a secondary or two, white, of course, and a earth tone complete my supply list. The Archival and Atelier color ranges are identical; consequently, I like to work with all sixty of them. I find that this keeps my paintings fresh, and it keeps me out of that six or seven tube rut into which so many artists fall. I realize that we each have our favorite hues, and old habits are hard to break; but sometimes it's fun to experiment with new colors. To help you break out of that rut, and to stimulate your visual and creative senses, each study is completed with a different palette. Nature is not one yellow, one red, or one blue.

Granted initially, there is discomfort when trying some thing brand new. Therefore let's explore some of the differences between the two: acrylics and oils. Acrylic is a water based medium. Oils are made fluid by the addition of an oil based product. The two do not mix. You can put oil over water, but you cannot put water over oil. The oil will always rise to the top. This must be respected in the order of painting. Undercoating and base coating may be applied with acrylic and topped with oils. However, once the oils are applied you can no longer put on any water based product. The consistency of the paint is also different. Acrylic is a very loose paint while oils are relatively thicker. Fortunately, we can make oils thinner while acrylics cannot be made pastier.

Return Visitors - check " What's New " Oils Woodcuts /Woodblcks Lithographs Etchings Acrylics Other Media Sculpture Windows Computer Art Brief Biography of Irving Amen Born in New York City, Amen began drawing at the young age of four. By the time he was fourteen years old, he won a scholarship to the Pratt Institute. He emulated Michelangelo's masterpieces and spent years perfecting his own unique style. From 1942 to 1945 he served with the Armed Forces. He headed a mural project and executed murals in the United States and Belgium. He had his first exhibition was at the New School for Social Research in New York and his second at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington in 1949. His travels throughout Israel, Greece and Turkey in 1960 led to a retrospective at the Artists House in Jerusalem He then studied in Paris where he had one-man shows in painting, woodcut and sculpture. Besides practicing his art, Amen also taught classes in sculptor and printmaking at such schools as the Pratt Institute (1961) and at Notre Dame University Commissions include a Peace Medal in honor of the Vietnam War and 12 stained glass windows for the Agudas Achim Synagogue in Ohio.
