Discipline Based Art Education
Discipline Based Art Education (commonly called DBAE) is an art education method that goes beyond painting a pretty picture. DBAE promotes higher level thinking skills, original problem solving skills, cultural and global awareness, verbal and non-verbal communication, and other skills that will help students throughout their lives. These goals are accomplished by teaching art history, criticism and aesthetics as well as production. For an example we will use a lesson on making clay pots using the coil method. That lesson provides the teacher with the opportunity to help the students learn about proportion, technique, and how the shape of the pot causes different feelings in viewers (pots can be graceful, strong, awkward, etc.) While the students make the pots, they solve problems like, "Do I want my coils to make designs on the pot? Why or why not?", and, "How do I make my pot look delicate?" The students' pots can be can be related to pots made in other cultures, like the Greeks, the Aztecs, the Japanese, or others.

Welcome to
Art On-Air Series Overview Videotapes Welcome to Art On-Air Art On-Air, the television series, is a lively set of arts lessons for upper elementary students. This Art On-Air Web site is designed for teachers and students interested in:
  • meeting the artists and seeing their work.
  • learning more about what it means to be an artist.
  • seeing the artwork of other students and sharing their own artworks in the Student Gallery.
  • visiting art museums and other arts resources on the World Wide Web.
  • and, for teachers, finding resources that will help you provide your students with enriching experiences in the visual arts.
About Art On-Air Series The twelve Art On-Air programs feature artists-in-residence from the Kentucky Arts Council teaching students how to draw, how to make African masks and books, and how to create a wide variety of other arts projects. Along with step-by-step instructions for the art projects, the programs give viewers a chance to see other students creating artwork and reflecting on their process and products. The series also features the work of famous artists as well as video field trips to visit local artists, art museums, and other exciting places that tie into the lessons. One of the main goals of Art On-Air is to inspire students to create unique works of art using the skills and methods presented in the programs. The series is also intended to teach students to see art in the world around them; to appreciate works of art and artists, past and present; to use a variety of media and tools; and to recognize elements and principles of art and design.
