By Steven Hicks Each September, I look out at all the bright, new faces, anxiously waiting for me to create the miracle of knowledge. Some of them are relieved that the first day of kindergarten has finally arrived, while others are fearful of what lies ahead. There are big smiles, but also a few sniffles and tears. And these are the parents!

    Jane Yang, Kindergarten Teacher
Jane Yang is that all-too-rare breed in D.C.: a local. After growing up in Prince George's County, Jane studied Women's Studies and Government at the University of Maryland, College Park. Post graduation Jane moved to Atlanta, where she taught kindergarten through Teach For America . After three years in Atlanta, Jane moved back to D.C. to teach kindergarten at Two Rivers Public Charter School . She currently lives with her fianc© Chris on Capitol Hill. She was kind enough to answer DCist's questions on everything from the state of education in D.C. to kindergarteners and their inability to deal with farting. What motivated you to join Teach For America? Why did you choose Atlanta over the other choices? I did not expect to be placed in Atlanta I truly believed I would get my first choice, New York! So I was surprised; I chose Atlanta as a top choice because it was urban, east coast, and sounded fun. I was motivated to join Teach For America because I think it has a meaningful mission which thousands of people are actually carrying out every day instead of just talking about what they would do if they had the chance.

Administrative TEACHERS Stacey Sileo Pre-kindergarten Teacher Marilyn Salek-Zepf Kindergarten Teacher I have been teaching at Pershing School for a long time. Kindergarten will always be my favorite grade because I love helping young children take the first steps of their school careers. Young children bring so much curiosity, enthusiasm and sincerity to the classroom. It is the teacher's sacred duty to nurture these traits so that children not only learn, but want to continue learning for the rest of their lives. D'Andrea Mosely 1st Grade Teacher My name is Ms. Mosely and I have been the first grade teacher at Pershing School for six years. Before that, I taught at the middle school level. I believe strongly that all children can learn. A strong, well-rounded and internationalized educational foundation is the key to academic success. First grade is the time of new, exciting and challenging experiences. It is the best grade to teach. 100% effort and participation leads to academic excellence. I have a BA in Psychology from the University of Illinois - CU, an MA in Education from Roosevelt University and an M.A.T. from Columbia College Chicago.
