We believe that literacy is the fundamental academic asset. The mission of Integrated French Language Arts in the Edina Public Schools is to develop literate, life-long learners who read, write, speak, listen, and view effectively in French by engaging them in rigorous, relevant curricula, with a particular emphasis on francophone cultures. This literacy development process, which occurs in French as well as in a child's native language, begins before formal schooling and continues throughout life.
Program Goals
Starting with the "linguistic bath" of Kindergarten all the way to the secondary program, the goals of our K-9 French immersion curriculum are:
  • to achieve functional competency in French (listening, speaking, reading and writing)

For instance, there will be no fine arts adoption for teachers to use until after 2004. art materials should also be adopted for kindergarten students.

ATTACHMENT III Request for Information from Kindergarten Teachers of Texas
December 3, 1999 Configuration of Kindergarten Instructional Materials Single Subject Adoption Should the board adopt social studies as a separate subject as they did mathematics in 1998 and language arts-reading in 1999? If yes, please explain your position a. It would depend on how companies incorporate literature in the units and how they would coordinate with the separate mathematics/reading-language arts adoptions. b. You cannot teach four and five year olds in isolation. Instruction needs to be integrated in order to be meaningful to them. c. Many prefer an integrated program. If no, please explain your position. a. Research indicates that young children learn best when they are able to make connections in their learning. By providing separate adoptions for each subject area, the result will be a fragmented curriculum across the state that fails to optimize opportunities to help young learners build bridges that facilitate the learning process. This summer kindergarten teachers across the state attended the kindergarten Texas Reading Academies where they were able to develop an integrated thematic unit that provided for learning centers that focused on developing the TEKS in a meaningful and concrete manner, where students could be actively engaged and where they were surrounded with an opportunity to learn via different learning modalities. When subject areas are adopted independently of each other, this will not happen.

    Teacher Training Faculty
The college introduced integrated training with two majors (lower primary - kindergarten teacher) first by preserving the values of traditional teacher training and child-centred kindergarten pedagogy. The improvement did not stop here but was continued by introducing specialized area system and foreign language teaching specialization.
Being aware of the unfavourable demographic changes of the past few years, the faculty is planning to introduce new training structures. Signs of this modernization are the introduction of a major in communications and the introduction of training for social workers, youth workers, and Roma studies. The credit-based training will provide an opportunity for all would-be teachers, as well as the students of these majors, to gain basic knowledge in these areas.
The Teacher Training Faculty has more than 800 full-time students. At present they can get a nationally accepted degree in 3 majors: kindergarten teacher, lower primary teacher, kindergarten - lower primary teacher. In the framework of correspondence training and several other accredited further education courses, the college has a further 400 fee-paying students. The study period is 8 semesters (6 for kindergarten teachers). We organize a Conference of Kindergarten Teachers annually. This event is a professionally recognized, further-training course.

  • Degree and Legal Standards: All professional personnel hold a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution and meet the regular certification standards of the state or the equivalent. For personnel who are not required to meet regular state certification standards , NCA-CASI defines the equivalent to certification as meeting the following within a minimum of a three-year period: 18 semester hours of pedagogy from a regionally accredited institution (including a minimum of six semester hours of student teaching); or, 270 clock hours of staff development in teaching and learning (including a minimum of 90 clock hours of mentoring by a master; Any combination of collegiate semester hours and clock hours (equivalent to 18 semester hours or 270 clock hours) that includes the minimum student teaching experience or mentoring experience.

  • Pre-kindergarten teachers meet the regular certification standards of the state for their specific assignment. Hello friends: I have a son starting kindergarten next year (Fall 2005) and I am planning to try intradistrict transfer. My question is for those of you out there who have considered intradistrict transfer to either Chabot or Peralta. Why did you choose one over the other? Are there pros and cons for each I should be aware of? Also, I'd appreciate any information about how you actually did the transfer process. Thanks Kate See also: Chabot Elementary School

We're districted for Peralta Elementary School in Oakland. My son will be entering Kindergarten in September. I'd like to hear from parents whose children attend the school, particularly the lower grades? What do you think of the school. Frances I'd like to hear about people's experiences with Peralta school. I know the school has a very active parents group and their test scores continue to rise, but it still rates just as an 'average' school. What are the teachers like? How do they handle open court? How would a very bright, very shy little boy fare at the school? We have a 1st grader at Peralta and a kindergartner for next year....we couldn't imagine a better fit for our family. Peralta has an incredible principal who knows all her students and has built a great team atmosphere with teachers and parents in running the school. Consider Peralta if you are looking for a small, intimate public school which pays extra attention to the arts and treats all children, regardless of backgrounds, with great respect. My child (and entire family) has had a great experience. Matt
