    Significant Points:
    • Public school teachers must have at least a bachelor’s degree, complete an approved teacher education program, and be licensed. Many States offer alternative licensing programs to attract people into teaching, especially for hard-to-fill positions. Excellent job opportunities are expected as a large number of teachers retire over the next 10 years, particularly at the secondary school level; opportunities will vary somewhat by geographic area and subject taught.
Nature of the Work About this section To Top
Teachers act as facilitators or coaches, using interactive discussions and “hands-on” approaches to help students learn and apply concepts in subjects such as science, mathematics, or English. They utilize “props” or “manipulatives” to help children understand abstract concepts, solve problems, and develop critical thought processes. For example, they teach the concepts of numbers or of addition and subtraction by playing board games. As the children get older, the teachers use more sophisticated materials, such as science apparatus, cameras, or computers. To encourage collaboration in solving problems, students are increasingly working in groups to discuss and solve problems together. Preparing students for the future workforce is the major stimulus generating the changes in education. To be prepared, students must be able to interact with others, adapt to new technology, and think through problems logically. Teachers provide the tools and the environment for their students to develop these skills.

Julie G. I do love the book! I copy lessons out daily and my daycare kids love the stuff in the book. Not to mention that the parents love it to. I think that the parents are to busy to teach at home, so books like this are really great. The children were able to get a good grip on the curriculum. We all had fun doing the projects. I have given out your web site to many of my daycare providers friends and i have showed them your book. Thank you and i really hope that all the people that have bought this book feels the wonder in the book too.

Using Technology with Kindergarten Students A kindergarten teacher shares best practice examples of exciting activities she does using technology to enhance learning in her kindergarten classroom.
    By Chris Gathers
have been teaching kindergarten for 30 years. I have taught all day every day kindergarten since 1989. I teach in a small Kansas town where the school district covers 400 square miles and the students come from diverse backgrounds. My elementary school has approximately 375 students in grades K-5 with three classes for each grade level. It is operated on a six day schedule to accommodate special classes for each classroom.
Technology is one of the biggest and most exciting changes I have seen during my teaching career. In my classroom there are three Macintosh computers for student and teacher use. My students also have access to a lab equipped with 25 Macintosh computers. A knowledgeable paraprofessional staffs the lab. I teach my own lessons when my students are using this facility. Each lesson is 30 to 45 minutes long. Sometimes the lessons I teach take several sessions to master and sometimes they don't. It all depends on the group of children.
