A Visit to the Sully Plantation
September 3rd, 2004 Sully Plantation
3601 Sully Road
Chantilly, VA Instructional Unit:
This trip to the Sully Plantation is to expose students to the differences in lifestyles during the 18th century and today. Curriculum Unit:
Grade 4
Social Studies Objectives:
Students will do an activity which was part of everyday 18th century life so they will be able to compare 18th century life with everyday life. Pre-Visit Activities
There will be a discussion in attempt to have students knowledgeable about the Sully Plantation.
1. Who built Sully, and when?
2. Who was Mr. Lee, and what did he do?
3. What was grown at Sully? 4. Who worked there, and what were their jobs? Finally, students will handle a piece of wool, rose head nail, and a bag of spices. They will speculate on what, how or where these items were used. On-Site Activities: After a brief welcome, children are divided into four groups: textiles, teaching, architecture and food preparation. They will spend approximately 90 minutes at one of the learning centers with a docent.

    Title - Electronic Pizza
    By - Patrick Slivka
Grade Level - 5-6 Children will use the paint program in Windows 95 or 98 to create a drawing of a pizza. Then they will use copy and paste to add different ingredients to their pizza. The children start with a basic shape for the pizza. Then they fill in with a color that reminds them of the pizza crust. We add the sauce using the airbrush tool with the widest spray. Next, we use the thicker paintbrush to add pieces of green pepper. We make one piece of pepperoni and use the copy and paste technique to add more pepperoni to it. You can do the same for mushrooms. Finally, the children use the airbrush technique to add melted cheese as the final topping. You can follow this up the next day by teaching them how to cut and paste slices of their pizzas. After that, you can have them copy and paste a certain number of slices to a word processing document after they compose ten sentences about pizza in general.

Ancient Civilizations Lesson Plans and Classroom Activities General Resources Home American Civil War Lesson Plans American Presidents Lesson Plans Ancient China Lesson Plans ... World Religions Lesson Plans Please note that with regard to lesson plans dealing with anthropology, archaeology, indigenous people, ancient civilizations, history, etc, there may be some cross-over and blurring of lines between the topics. For example, a lesson plan dealing with archaeology is automatically dealing with an anthropological subject. A lesson plan dealing with indigenous people is also automatically dealing with anthropology and any of them may, or may not, be dealing with history or ancient civilizations. While every attempt will be made to keep the topic lines as 'clean' as possible, be aware this may not always be possible. Appropriate grade or age levels are included with the lesson plans. The number of lesson plans available online for this topic is enormous. This site can not and does not index all lesson resources relating to ancient civilizations. That would be impossible, as sites appear and disappear with astonishing rapidity. The following provides some idea of what is available and will hopefully be a good starting point.

    Introduction
A student's family is a wonderful and authentic place to draw from and create authentic interesting experiences for students. Sharing delicious family recipes is a wonderful way to express students' culture and individuality. As students research ingredients, nutritional value, and food costs they will learn that some recipes can be viewed as a reflection of a student's background. This can be a wonderful opportunity to explore the history behind such recipes. Students not only learn from each other, but they also get a chance to explore the issue of diversity in class. With this unit, the class will create a recipe book containing students' family recipes while experiencing the elements of an interdisciplinary, collaborative, technology assisted learning environment.
