Oceanography Class Quilt
Art - Grades (all)
Teachers: This is an activity that each student can work on independently and still have their artwork become part of a whole culminating art project about the ocean life learned in class. Objective : Students will create and observe a collage of oceanography topics that will be placed on quilt tiles in a culmination art project to represent information learned. Materials:
  • fabric squares (1 ft. x 1 ft.) fabric markers crayons (may be ironed in to make image permanent) tempera paint sewing needles and thread buttons, fabric, fringe scissors construction paper squares (1 ft. x 1 ft.) colored pencils
Activity:
  • The teacher must decided what medium of art the students will be working with.
    • a. Cutting and sewing images. c. Creating images with crayon and melted into the fabric with an iron. d. Use of construction paper instead of fabric and gluing images.

LESSON PLANS Rock Art Lesson Plan Title: Art and Culture Grade Level: Objectives: Compare and contrast the ways in which human figures are portrayed in rock art made by ancient Native American artists and in the drawings and paintings of historic European and American artists. Subject Areas: Art, History, Social Studies Skills: Use images to identify human characteristics and artistic intentions as influenced by cultural convention. Overview: Ancient Native American artists commonly depicted human subjects in petroglyph, pictograph, and combination forms of rock art imagery. Some of these images are naturalistic and some are highly stylized. Many images illustrate individuals dressed or decorated in particular ways, others show human figures in specific postures or in specific positions relative to other objects or figures. In general, these modes of representation differ significantly from the ways in which historic Euro-American artists portrayed the human form, even when they were depicting Native Americans. Subject Areas: Art, History, Social Studies Skills: Identify connections between rock art symbolism and Native American ritual practices. Overview: Much Native American rock art is believed to be the product of individual (e.g. vision quest) and community (shamanistic) ritual activity. The nature of the motifs and the contexts in which they occur often support inferences concerning various kinds of ritual activity. Time: 2-4 hours Materials: Rock art images from the various Photo Galleries or from searching the Rock Art Database using the Search screen (Rock Art Category = Prehistoric Native American; General Motif = Anthropomorph, Zoomorph, and Geometric), either printed out (preferably in color) or shown on a computer screen.

    LESSON PLANS
Lesson Plans: Strong, concise statements of objectives are always an essential component of any lesson plan. Once the objectives have been determined, the lesson and unit plan design follows. New teachers should develop thorough lesson plans, in part to ensure that important details and concerns have not been over looked, but also because it provides a disciplined and structured way to think about the art of teaching.
...In general, a good lesson plan will contain variations of the following items: *Title and brief introduction of the concepts to be addressed. *Goal(s) or the relationship of the lesson to the purposes of the curricular goals. *Rationale… why are the students learning this. *Instructional Objectives, and *Resources… all relevant vocabulary and definitions, books, audio visual aids, articles.

Marble A sculpture is a three-dimensional object, which means that you can walk all the way around it and see many different views. Sculptures are made from a variety of materials, including stone, metal, wood, and fabric. An artist chooses the material that will best suit what he/she is trying to express in the sculpture. Albert P. Henry, for example, might have chosen marble for his "Bust of Abraham Lincoln" because marble reminds us of the sculptures of the Roman emperors. Objectives/Classroom Activity: Make a three-dimensional bust of yourself using a material that isn't like hard marble at all: soft and stuffable fabric! You will need to think about both the front and back of yourself to make this sculpture. Grade Levels: 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades

    Reflection/Re-integration
The Basic information allows the teacher to immediately identify the theme, topic and materials. Outcomes are stated for each of the multidimensional syllabi. The Teaching/learning Steps and Procedures involve three components. The personalisation phase allows learners to consider their own experiences and attitudes about the subject under consideration. The contextualisation phase offers key information about the communicative situation and the nature of the text. Regarding the communicative situation students should know who is communicating with whom, for what reason, in what relationship (eg., mother-daughter, boss-employee, friend-friend). The nature of the text should be made clear by indicating certain key discourse characteristics (eg. poems may have uneven lines and atypical punctuation; letters usually have formulaic openings and closings). Teachers will also encourage learners to use their knowledge of similar texts from their mother tongue. Employed effectively, these two components, personalization and contextualisation, permit learners to anticipate new information.
