Modiano, 1928 Art Deco replaced Art Nouveau as the major international decorative style after World War I and continued until World War II. Art Deco represented a machine age aesthetic, replacing flowing, floral motifs with streamlined, geometric designs that expressed the speed, power and scale of modern technology. Design influences were many, from the modern art movements of Cubism, Futurism and Constructivism to ancient geometric design elements from the exotic cultures of Egypt, Assyria and Persia. In poster art, precursors of Art Deco were the German Plakatstil, the Viennese Secession, the Deutscher Werkbund, and the Parisian fashion design revolution which commenced in 1908.

It was an age of prohibition, cocktail parties, flappers, and the Charleston - "The Roaring Twenties." It was a decadent period, a strong reaction to the strict Victorian ideals that still prevailed. The Art Deco period, although almost entirely an American phenomenon, derived its name from the Exposition of Decorative Arts and Modern Manufactures in Paris in 1925. The difference between Art Deco and other periods, is that the design aspects that were applied to Art Deco jewelry were incorporated into everything from toasters to ocean liners. The central theme of Art Deco is its geometry and symmetry. Its boldness of both design and color had such universal application. This is one of the fascinating aspects of the Art Deco movement.
Designs that were characteristic of the earlier periods were generally an attempt to escape from the clutch of the industrial monster known as mass production. The Art Deco movement was an attempt to combine the harshness of mass production with the sensitivity of art and design. Art Deco jewelry was influenced, to some extent, by the two previous periods, Art Nouveau and Edwardian. Borrowing from Art Nouveau its highly stylized and graceful designs, Art Deco took the free flowing curves and naturalistic motifs and replaced them with a harshly geometric and symmetrical theme. Borrowing from the Edwardian period its use of platinum and diamonds, designers of the period discovered new techniques to work with platinum that enabled the implementation of designs with precise and intricate shapes and outlines. Diamonds were cut in shapes never before seen such as emerald cuts, pear shapes, and marquises. These blended well with the symmetrical nature of the jewelry.

Home Neo-Classical Modernism Revolutionary ... Restoration H AVANA A RCHITECTURE .COM A rt N ouveau, A rt D E clectic At the turn of the 20th Century along with Buenos Aires, Havana was the grandest and most important Latin American City. This boom period known as vacas gordas (fat cows) demonstrates huge examples of buildings from the international influences of art nouveau, art deco and eclectic. Its suburbs developed to what we see today as Miramar, Marianao, Cubanacan and Playa. The lush and wealthy Miramar was set out on the American street grid pattern and became a home to diplomats and foreigners. The railway terminal (1912) and the Universidad de la Habana , (1906 -1940) and the Capitolio (1926 - 1929) are a good example of the eclectic style. The Capitolo is an exact replica to half its size of the Capitol building in Washington DC. The dome was at 62 meters the highest point in the city and an example of the influence and wealth deriving from the USA at the time. The Lopez Serrano building (1932) by Ricardo Mira was the first tall building in Cuba and inspired by the Rocafeller Centre in New York. Its design influence can be seen in many buildings in Miami and LA. The Edificio Bacardi (1930) is one of Havana's grandest buildings and it's best example of Art Deco.

Decorative Art in Architecture as a Part of Bandung History

(Indonesia)
Historical Backgrounds
Bandung is the capital city of West Java, Indonesia. Its roots dated from prehistoric time, when a group of prehistoric people lived on the northern part of an ancient lake. Some thousands' years ago the lake became dry and changed into the present Bandung valley. The city is located on high land surrounded by spectacular hills and mountains, and because of that has a much cooler climate than most of Indonesian cities. The name of Bandung has been known since the fifteenth century as a part of the Hindu Pajajaran kingdom. From 1821 until 1852 the city was closed to the European and Chinese people.
Art Deco
Art Deco is the contemporary Modern Design, Architecture, and a broad spectrum of Decorative Arts. It drew renewed inspiration from ancient arts and primitive arts, and was purified by ideas of the functionalists. In the United States it was known as " Modernism ," and in France as " Art Moderne ." Some said that it was a reaction to " Art Nouveau ," and the other said that it was an extension of " Art Nouveau The term " Art Deco " was first used in 1968, in a book written by Bevis Hillier to describe the interrelated art and design movement of the era. Parallel to the movements in the United States were the three main movements in Europe. The first one was started in Austria and Germany, known as "

Art Nouveau Josef Hoffmann: fruit basket Charles Rennie Mackintosh: smoker's cabinet Art Nouveau, the fin-de-siècle style that preceded Art Deco, fell out of fashion in the years before the First World War. In the increasingly conservative political climate, critics saw it as 'decadent' and over-elaborate. It failed to meet the demand for a modern national style. In France, veterans of Art Nouveau like Maurice Dufrène and Paul Follot recognized the need to modernize tradition and adapt their designs to machine production. In Austria, the designers of the Wiener Werkstätte retained their handcraft practices. However, they gradually abandoned the taut geometry of the turn-of-the century Secession style for a greater decorative freedom based on national sources. Elements of Art Nouveau's visual language were adapted in the stylized naturalistic decoration characteristic of the Atelier Martine. The more linear, geometric variant of Art Nouveau, exemplified by the work of Josef Hoffmann and Charles Rennie Mackintosh, directly fed Art Deco designers' search for 'modern' forms and decorative motifs. A Directory of Art Deco Designers Andre Leon Arbus Norman Bel Geddes A.M. Cassandre Pierre Chareau ... Frank Lloyd Wright

Andre Leon Arbus
After graduating from the Ecole des Beaux Arts, Arbus joined his father's Toulouse cabinet making firm, which he later headed. Exhibiting in the Paris Salons from 1926 onwards, he moved to the capital in I930. Arbus was awarded the Prix Blumenthal in 1935 and exhibited at the great International Exhibitions in Brussels (1935), Paris(1937) and New York (1939), Although he ended the firm's production of Furniture in eighteenth century styles, his own designs were very much inspired by the more stylized classicism of the French Empire He rejected the rhetoric of the UAM, continuing his workshop system and incorporating luxurious veneers, bleached animal hide vellum and gilt mounts in his furniture.
Norman Bel Geddes After studying briefly at the Art Institute of Chicago, Bel Geddes worked in a Chicago advertising agency designing posters for General Motors and Packard. In 1918 he began a successful career as a stage set designer before turning to industrial design in 1927. Despite commissions for the Toledo Scale Co. (1929), and the Standard Gas Equipment Corp. (1932). it was as polemicist of Modernity that Bel Geddes gained greatest recognition. His book Horizons (1932) was a manifesto for Modern streamlining which promoted a series of futuristic designs for buildings and transport systems. Bel Geddes' positivist vision of a streamlined future reached its apogee with his' futurama '' Metropolis of Tomorrow' for the General Motors Highways and Horizons Pavilion at the 1939 New York World's Fair.
