Art Deco in Architecture
Introductory Essay
by Heidi Dressler
Art Deco , like any other architectural style name, has a range of definitions. Some people would call 1950s streamlines an Art Deco characteristic, while others restrict the style strictly to its 1920s and ‘30s urban incarnations. Always, it is a style that marks the bold transition to modernism in America. No more hand-crafted, earthy details; Art Deco is all about machines, mass-production, metal and concrete . The earliest forms of Art Deco do exhibit a slight reminder of the previous Art Nouveau movement’s graceful nature motifs, while in later years geometry and mass take over to create what is sometimes referred to as Art Moderne or Streamline. Throughout Kalamazoo County, there are several examples of Art Deco architecture, from the early, elaborate skyscraper shape of the American National Bank to the boxlike, brick and concrete pump stations scattered about. All of the examples, with the exception of a few pump stations, a garage and two unique homes, are located in the heart of the city or along much-traveled commercial or manufacturing strips. American Art Deco has typically been a commercial-use form of architecture, because of its association with the change to urban life and the industrialism of the surrounding decades.

My name is David Littlefield. My wife Gretchen and I began collecting art glass in 1999, starting with colorful mini-pitchers and vases. From there we graduated to contemporary iridescent glass. Then we discovered Loetz and 19th and early 20th century Czechoslovakian and Bohemian art glass. I met other collectors through eBay, one of whom became my mentor, Dr. Alfredo Villanueva-Collado, a New York City Czech art glass collector, and author of several articles on this type of glass, including articles on Dugan, Pallme-Koenig, Rindskopf and Kralik at the www.loetz.com website , owned by Mr. Eddy Scheepers of Belgium.
As a note, the boundaries in the part of Europe where this glass was manufactured often changed, but the factories themselves remained. Rather than try to determine the actual country of origin, I have chosen to add "Bohemian" in the title, which pretty much

78. Antiques Roadshow/Antique Speak: Art Deco
If art nouveau was curves, Louise says. Then art deco was angles. artists and artisans found those angles in the hardedged machines—from the pistons

Louise Luther
, a consultant and appraiser with Skinner, Boston, is reluctant to define Art Deco briefly. "If you asked 70 people what Art Deco was, you would probably get 70 different answers," Louise explains. "And that would hold true, even if you asked just experts." She adds that these contradictory definitions are exacerbated by inaccurate ones. For example, scores of books repeat the same story about Art Deco's origin. They declare the movement was born in 1925, the year of the Paris Exhibition of Decorative and Industrial Arts (hence the shortened phrase, "Art Deco"). But Louise points out the flaw in that designation. "If that was the beginning of Art Deco, they wouldn't have had anything to show," quips Louise, stating that the movement had been evolving for a decade or two prior to the exhibition. With caveats such as these, Louise finally does struggle for a definition, comparing Art Deco, which had its heyday between the two World Wars, to the other "Art" style that is often confused with it. "If Art Nouveau was curves," Louise says. "Then Art Deco was angles."

80. Antiques Roadshow/Antique Speak: Art Nouveau
art deco evolved from a reaction against art nouveau, Arlie explains. Instead of nature, art deco took its inspiration from the geometry of the machine,

Flamboyant, erotic and organic. These are the three words that ANTIQUES ROADSHOW appraiser Arlie Sulka uses to describe the artistic movement known as Art Nouveau, the style that flourished in the decorative arts in both Europe and America at the turn of the 20th century. "It's a very exuberant style," says Arlie, who works at Lillian Nassau Limited, a New York gallery that has been at the center of the Art Nouveau revival over the last half century. "It's based on nature, which makes it come alive. It gives it a sense of movement." The Art Nouveau artists found a freeing vocabulary in natural forms. The movement's signature motif was the S-curve, which might be found in a flower's stem on a brooch or the trail of smoke from a cigarette depicted in a theater poster. These supple and sinuous curves found their way into the designs of table lamps, ceramics, art glass, posters, furniture and jewelry. Not only did many Art Nouveau artists dabble in more than one of these decorative arts, but the style also inspired many collaborations, such as a Tiffany window designed by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. Unlike the Victorians before them, Art Nouveau artists were not shy about the naked body, and the aesthetic is often described as a feminine one. Naked or scantily clothed women, often portrayed as nymphs or mermaids, populated Art Nouveau posters and paintings. Artists often placed these imaginary women in fantastic settings, gave them ethereal or erotic poses, and dressed them exotically. The posters of Czech artist Alphonse Mucha, who worked in Paris during the Art Nouveau period, provide good examples of these types of female forms.
