Quirks of the Color Quest
Color, the Chameleon of the Web Color Theory Color theory encompasses a multitude of definitions, concepts and design applications. All the information would fill several encyclopedias. As an introduction, here are a few basic concepts. The Color Wheel A color circle, based on red, yellow and blue, is traditional in the field of art. Sir Isaac Newton developed the first circular diagram of colors in 1666. Since then scientists and artists have studied and designed numerous variations of this concept. Differences of opinion about the validity of one format over another continue to provoke debate. In reality, any color circle or color wheel which presents a logically arranged sequence of pure hues has merit. PRIMARY COLORS Red, yellow and blue In traditional color theory, these are the 3 pigment colors that can not be mixed or formed by any combination of other colors. All other colors are derived from these 3 hues SECONDARY COLORS Green, orange and purple

http://www.sanford-artedventures.com/study/g_color.html
Glossary Term: Color
Color (hue) is one of the elements of art . Artists use color in many different ways. The colors we see are lightwaves absorbed or reflected by everything around us. In nature, a rainbow is white light that is broken apart by the moisture in the air. People discovered that white light can be broken apart using tools like prisms or this spectroscope. The colors of the visible light spectrum are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. White light consists of all of the colors mixed together. The color of an object depends on how it absorbs and/or reflects light. If an object absorbs all of the light wavelengths, it will appear black. If it reflects all of them, it will appear white. If an object absorbs all wavelengths except red, for example, it will look red. Artists have invented many different media that imitate the colors of light. Painters, for example, use powdered pigments to reproduce the colors of the rainbow. Here are more ways to learn about the way artists use and think about color: Find out more about color in these glossary entries: And try these cool color tricks!

Curriculum Plans for Teachers and Home Schoolers
Color Magic! Color Theory
can be one of the most exciting art lessons you do with your classroom. In this lesson, your students will assemble abstract sculptures, with each sculpture determined by a set of color relationships, much like a game. In their hands these color relationships become immediate and tangible. As soon as they finish one sculpture they take it apart and use the pieces to make another, different, sculpture, determined by a different set of color theory "rules". As the students do these over and over, they quickly begin to understand and make color theory "their own". In no time they have a good working knowledge of primary and secondary colors, complementary colors, and warm and cool colors. The students shown in the picture are in a fifth grade class, but this lesson has been done with kids as young as first grade. If you are working with younger children, you might want to recruit some parent volunteers to give you a hand. They can be available to help answer questions and steer some of the students through the first sculpture or two. What this lesson does not get into is the tertiary colors. You can mention these, but explain to your students that for now we are going to focus our discussion and our Color Wheel on the primary and secondary colors.

ART STUDIO CHALKBOARD
Color Wheel and Color Complements
The Color Wheel describes the relationships between colors. It is laid out so that any two PRIMARY COLORS (red, yellow, blue) are separated by the SECONDARY COLORS (orange, violet, and green). Primary Colors are basic and cannot be mixed from other elements. They are to color what prime numbers are to mathematics. One can mix two primaries to get a Secondary Color. You will notice that each Secondary Color on the Color Wheel is bounded by two primaries. These are the components that one would mix to get that Secondary Color. Color Complements are color opposites. These colors contrast each other in the most extreme way possible. They also help to make each other more active. In the Color Wheel illustration above, the complement of the color is used as text in that section. This is to illustrate the opposite character of the color. Color Complements are on opposite sides of the Color Wheel. The ratios and illustrations on the right of the chalkboard are ideal amounts of color compliments according to Johannes Itten. He believed that equal amounts of red and green are appropriate (1:1 ratio). Blue and orange are different in value , so they their ratios need adjustment (5 blue:3 orange ratio). The same is true of violet and yellow (6 violet:1 yellow). These ratios were probably devised to counter the intensity of colors like yellow and orange.

Description:
This course has two components and is designed to fulfill a one semester (0.5 credit) fine arts requirement.

Students will study painting conservation and how conservators determine the ages of paintings. They will identify the effect of light and temperature on color. These and other topics will be elucidated in the class which has been planned in conjunction with the Baltimore Museum of Art.
Students will practice studio art from painting to sculpture. This is where the students' creativity can really soar! In the relaxed environment of the art studio, students will do a wide variety of artistic techniques from canvases on easels to plaster sculpting. Instruction will be given on executing portraits and many other art forms. Dates: June 26th to July 28th Time: 8:30am to 3:00pm, Monday - Thursday
